Anyone not doing a big gift for christmas?

Last yr, the boys got a ride on lightning McQueen and a playhouse as their big gifts for Christmas.

This year, I have nothing that is physically large. 2yo DS is obsessed with dinosaurs so we got pretty much all the switch n go dinosaurs. 4yo DS loves legos.

I didn't get anything BIG either. I'm waiting for dd's 2nd bday to get her a kitchen and all the accessories.

We only get DD a few small gifts for Christmas. She gets so many gifts from her grandparents and aunts and uncles, it would be even more overkill if we bought large items too!

We're not getting anything for the kids because they're getting SO MUCH STUFF from our families. Plus my family is coming up to spend the Holiday with us, so the tree will be STACKED Christmas morning. We figure we'll save the money this year. My babes are 3 and 4, if that matters.

Re: Anyone not doing a big gift for christmas?

To me it can be physically big, or financially big. For instance some of those lego sets are $150+. My DS understands the money part of it. He thinks Santa has a set budget for each kid so he gets that if he gets the large lego set, thats his BIG gift.

THis year he is getting a wii U. its not physically big, but its very pricey and trust me he knows hte exact price! LOL.

DS2 is getting little trike...poor kid, its really not a big gift in either category, but he will be most happy with the little woody & jessie toy story dolls so it doesnt really matter much!

My DD will be 3 on Xmas eve and we didn't get her a big gift for either. She's really into Disney princesses so we got her a bunch of stuff like that. Plus, my family buys her a ton of stuff.

DS is only 9 months. We bought him literally 1 thing. LOL

Nope. They just got tons of stuff for their birthday. We got them puzzles and smaller stuff for Xmas. We thought of getting an outdoor slide or playhouse but we will just wait til spring. They don't know better.

No big gifts this year. We're planning to get DS a swingset for his birthday in the spring so I'd rather save for that. I know he's going to looove all his little gifts so I think it works out fine.

I did a lot of small gifts. A lot! hehe

She got a big gift for her bday and then a play kitchen a few months after that. And we have so much family that buys her SOOO much that I just didnt think a big toy was necessary.

Re: Anyone not doing a big gift for christmas?

Not needed.

Our DS loves Dinosaurs too.
All he wants is a big trex.
That's what we got him. It cost $15. We also got him a Blu ray about Dinosaurs & a few small ones. Total cost $50.

Why add unnecessary stuff?

As for our 2 year old, same idea. $20 Doll, movie.

DD has exceeded her space limit in our house Chat Icon

Re: Anyone not doing a big gift for christmas?

Me.
DD is 3 and at the age where she just wants STUFF.
I feel like she will be more excited to have a bunch of gifts to open- than one large gift and then less smaller gifts.
I got her a bunch of stuff- and probably spent a TON- but not one BIG ticket item.
She didn't really want or ask for anything big and not to mention- I have absolutely no space in my home for large toys

Not us. My 8 and 6 yos are asking for mostly video game stuff. We already have the systems. The games and figures do add up though. I did get my 8yo beatz headphones because he has been asking for them for a long time. And my mom hunted down a real denver broncos uniform for my 6yo. As for my 2yo- we have most "big" things- train table, scooters, bikes in every size- from the older kids, so there is no need. And we live in an apartment so there is no room for anything else. He has 3 or 4 smallish gifts to open- one is a garage for his matchbox cars which I know he will love, so he is good. And the 8mo- an Elmo doll and a ball popper. That's it.

DD's bday is a week before Christmas so between Christmas and her birthday she gets plenty of stuff, so we do not go nuts getting her gifts for either occasion esp since she is only 2. In fact we didn't even get her a bday gift this year just $$ for her account. I did however get her a play kitchen on clearance last year, so that will be her Christmas gift.. She is also getting a swingset from my parents and an IPAD from my in laws so Id say she is doing pretty damn well for a 2 year old. If I didn't have the kitchen already I wouldn't be giving her anything other than her Christmas stocking with crayons, coloring books etc. In fact, maybe I will save her kitchen for the spring!!! Im certainly storing some of her other toys away for the spring.

Re: Anyone not doing a big gift for christmas?

No big gifts this year, in size or $ value. My DS is 4 and loves Legos, so he got a lot of those. And my DD is only 10 mos. She doesn't need anything, especially since at this age all the toys are gender neutral and she has everything from when my DS was a baby.

Despite no big gifts, I think they still got too many, and I think Santa needs to scale back his generosity...at least when he comes to my house! Chat Icon

Re: Anyone not doing a big gift for christmas?

This year is really the first year DS "gets" the Santa/gifts thing.
So he's getting a train table. It's the one of 3 things on his list and he is obsessed.

It doesn't matter much thought what we buy. His godfather wins every year. He started a tradition for DS and buys him the HESS truck each year. Ever since the billboards went up, that's all DS talks about. I could get rid of all his cars and he wouldn't care. Misplace a Hess truck- end of the world!
