the only thing we waited on was fish (DH is allergic)... otherwise we went with whatever we felt... DS was fine. Go with your gut and have Benedryl on hand just in case.

Same here, so I'm not really stressing the high allergy foods. DD has had strawberries, eggs, milk, and I'm going to give her fish (probably flounder or tilapia) soon. She's 11 months.

I followed my pediatrician's advice, so no I didn't start early. However, I am curious--and not to be snarky or whatever--what is the benefit to you of giving eggs, peanut butter, etc. before it is advisable?

Also, I have NO family allergy history whatsoever and wouldn't you know it...my 3rd DC has an egg allergy!

We went according to our peds guidelines. Lo and behold, DS had a severe allergy to eggs that he has since outgrown. Like Eriann, there was no family history of ANY food allergies.

We didn't. We gave food to her when we felt she wass ready and that inculded strawberries and eggs and fish and peanut butter. DD is now 14crouched months old and eats pretty much everything. The great thing about being able to give her eggs and peanut butter once we did was that they are both terrific sources of protein.

My pediatrician doesn't believe that there is any correlation between starting certain foods early and allergies.

We have no family history of allergies and DD has been eating eggs, nuts, berries etc since around ten months with no issues.

For me its just being able to feed him what everyone else is eating as opposed to making him something else. Also as another poster said they are great sources of protein.
I am a big believer that starting some of these foods so late is what is causing all of these allergies.

If you're BFing, they are still ingesting some of these foods anyways. We found out DS was allergic to many high allergen foods (although they aren't severe allergies) before he even started eating food himself. The research goes both ways, no one has an answer for this. Everything is a theory at this point Chat Icon

This is exactly another reason why I am not afraid of trying things and why I was told to eat lots of high allergen foods as it will get passed to the boys.

I gave DS strawberries, peanut butter, and eggs, and fish early also. Neither DH or I have any history of allergies and DS had also gone for allergy testing when he was 6 months old to rule out a milk allergy and nothing came up so I felt ok trying them sooner.

Because every ped has a different timeline!
Mine opened the floodgates for food at our 9 month visit. My DD can't have PB or shellfish, but anything else is fair game. I know that's not the case for everyone though.

What is this everyone is mentioning about fish? My ped actually says it's ok to start fish now (DD is 7 months) but just not shellfish. Is there some issue with fish also?

DS had peanut butter at 13 months and strawberries at 8 months. I am holding off on seafood until 2 years old b/c we have a history of that allergy in the family.

I have a friend who EBF and her daughter has several severe food allergies. She actually didn't show any reaction to BFing when her mom ate the allergenic foods including peanut butter. It wasn't until she started solids that the reactions began.

Re: Anyone not wait to give high allergen foods?

DS had strawberries (Dr. said it was ok) when he was old enough to pick them up.. whole eggs at 1 year (Dr. said it was ok) and pb at 15 months (Dr. at first advised 2 years but when I asked she said ok just to have benedryl on hand).. Fish I think we waited a year but he still doesn't like it yet. Haven't even tried shrimp yet but only because I haven't had the opportunity to, I only get it when I eat out and haven't had it in a long time. Some new studies have shown it to be ok. Some have even gone to say that if you wait then that can bring on allergic reactions or something like that. I just asked the dr. about anything I wanted to give and if she highly advised not to then I wouldn't be she was ok with it when I asked..

Just want to say, we don't have any food allergies in our family either and I EBF for a year, and stopped completely at about 16 months- and Sasha has a Tree Nut Allergy, and in the last year has developed slight sensitivity to peanuts. So we avoid all nuts.

Many of these allergies are not genetic.

eta-- I also ate tons of nuts while pregnant and breastfeeding for protein since I am a vegetarian, which obviously Sasha ingested.
