Anyone switch to a faster nipple flow with a newborn?
Jordan is 3 weeks tomorrow. He is waking up SCREAMING for food before the 3 hour mark. I think the main issue is that the nipple is too slow for him. He is taking upwards of an hour or more to eat three ounces - when he's really almost up to 5 ounces and drinks more than that sometimes. What ends up happening, esp in middle of the night, is he either loses interest and gets sleepy, or DH and I get frustrated because we've been feeding him for an hour and end up pulling him off. So, I think he's waking up that often because he's still hungry. So, did anyone else encounter this? Anyone move to a faster flow nipple so young?
Thanks!

Re: Anyone switch to a faster nipple flow with a newborn?
i tried it with both kids but not quite that young. it was a disaster--they weren't ready for it even though the stage 1 nipple was so slow. they wound up throwing up half the bottle because they ate too fast and had horrible gas because they swallowed so much air.
you can try it, but i honestly think it's WAY too early at 3 weeks. but every baby is different.
eta: my DD goes from eating every 2 hours to eating every 5 hours. some days she's just really hungry and SCREAMS for food--it's normal. and they go through a growth sprt around 3 weeks old.

my older ds we switched to the level 2 within the first week.. but he never went past it .... i am hesitant with ds #2 since he nurses 75% of the time and i do not want him to get used to the asier flow

We used Level 2 on Born Free since DD was 2 weeks. We switched to Level 3 at 4 months. She is a fussy eater and easily distracted so it helped. I actually noticed LESS gass with the faster flow too...

Constantine was just 4 weeks old on Monday and we've been going through the same thing for the past few days. He screams out of nowhere in the middle of eating. I now burp him sometimes after every few sips, whenever he screams. I tried 3 different bottles and 2 different nipples. I went back to the original ones I tried, playtex drop ins, slow flow nipple. The medium was still a little fast and I figured since he already had gas problems I didnt want him to take in any more air. He's still doing this but the burping is helping even though all the feedings are taking almost an hour! I hope I dont have to switch formula, I figured since he's not spitting up he's not allergic or anything, he's eating similac advance.
Oh and he's also been eating 5oz for over a week every 3-4 hours. Sometimes I have to make another ounce too. Your DS sounds just like mine! Good luck with the faster nipple, hopefully that will solve your problem, I wish it did for us!

Re: Anyone switch to a faster nipple flow with a newborn?
You can definitely try it, just use caution because a faster flow requires a more coordinated swallow...which does not necessarily mean DC can not handle it, just watch him. It sounds like DC is taking too long. Is he sucking in the nipple? You don't want him expending too much energy trying to eat. Give it a try. Go slow, sit DC upright. If DC is coughing/choking/struggling to keep up/throwing up a lot, it may be too soon. At that point I would consult your ped.
