DD was 20m and was in a twin size and did great, she moved to a double when she was 23m did great with that too!

DD#2 will be 2 on Monday - we ended up putting her in a toddler bed back in February when she was about 21 months. We had no choice she was climbing out of her crib at around 19 months - for a short time I tried a sleep sack which helped but then she started to use her arms to push up and then would go HEAD first since she couldn't get her legs over the side in the sleep sack. So we had to transition her. I think the transition would have been easier if she LIKED to be in her crib/room in the 1st place. She would be hysterical every time we would put her down in the 1st place. DD still wakes a couple of nights a week around 4 or 5 am and now she just comes into our room and passes back out.

All I can say is, I plan on doing the transition this summer and DS won't be 2 until October! I'll be putting him in a toddler bed and will be putting a gate on his bedroom door so he can't escape and roam the upstairs! He sleeps fine on a cot at daycare, so hopefully it goes well in a bed. I never did the switch- both of my DDs are still in cribs at 1.5 and 2.5 years old. They love their cribs!  Let us know how it goes when you do make the switch!

Yes, 21 months and he did great! We did it at that time because he started climbing out of the crib. Good luck!

i may be in the minority here but we waited until my 2nd needed the crib....my 2 are 26 mos apart. we waited until my littlest was ready for the crib (he was in a bassinet for about 2 mos in our room) then got my DD her big girl bed, switched the rooms over etc. She never gave us one ounce of trouble about any of it and she was almost 2.5 when we put her in her bed

I was so freaked about this. My 2 are 27 months apart. I switched her right after she turned 2 and she had no issues at all with the transition.
She did start giving us trouble a few weeks before dd2 arrived...think she sensed it.... so i would def give him a few months to adjust first in case.
that's why we were thinking about doing it a few months earlier. I wanted him to get use to his new room before him being shocked about not being the baby of the house anymore and regressing. I couldn't deal with a newborn waking plus my 2 year old at the same time. (although I have to prepare myself in case it does)
Ugh this was my first week home and I wanted to DIE. Sadie was waking up a milion times a night with ridiculous requests and it would always be just when DD2 feel asleep. DH and I were ready to rip our hair out. Luckily it only lasted about a week and although she is a little difficult going down still, she hasnt been waking up in the middle of the night.

Yes but now when you read to him in bed you can actually lay next to him and cuddle. I was so the first day but then I realized that I could lay next to him and we love cuddle times at night.

DS climbed out of his crib around 18/19 months...so....we moved him then!
