Anyones baby have a dairy allergy and grow out of it?
I caved on the dairyfree diet and since my milk supply dropped so much we decide to do formula. Yesterday gave Prosobee as per Peds.. and dd had a reaction too. Which she says defiantly means she has a dairy allergy. Just gave her first bottle of Alimentrum (sp?) no reaction.
Im also that this is something that they can grow out of.. anyone experience?

Prosobee is soy, Alimentum is milk based. She shouldn't have a reaction unless she's allergic to soy as well. What kind of reaction did she have?? (DS hated both..but he just hated formula in general..he was miserable on it..so i went dairy free & back to BM)
And yes, they can grow out of them as they get older.

Her face, and entire body turned bright red and had some raised spots, plus it was hot. She acted normal tho.
If alimentum is milk based why would she put her on it, after saying she defiantly has a dairy allergy?

That's what I don't understand either...I didn't understand it when they put DS on it. The milk proteins are broken down so it's easier to digest, but it's still milk based. If she had a reaction to soy, she might be allergic to that too. 40-60% of babies with dairy allergies also have soy allergies.
It's good that she's tolerating Alimentum though, because the next step would be neocate (amino acid based), and that's expensive.

I hope she can tolerate it.. with Prosobee the reaction happen after 2nd bottle.. at first just some red blemish by mouth, thought it was from bottle maybe resting on her.. then 2 hours later her face became blotchy and then by the time doc returned my call she was covered.
So far with first bottle of Alimentum she spit up some after 1st ounce, but kept down rest. I keep checking her every second for any reaction. So far very alert and coowing like crazy.

Re: Anyones baby have a dairy allergy and grow out of it?
Milk based is really an off way to describe Alimentum.
It is a hydrolized formula. The milk proteins are basically broken down to the point of being pre digested. THe baby doesnt digest any of the proteins themselves so any potential allergy to milk proteins is USUALLY elliminated by using alimentum. Neocate is really for severe cases.
My daughter was / is on Alimentum. We chose to put her on it and we did not try any soy because we have issues with soy based on the research we read.
My dd would get something like eczema on her face , and severe , severe constipation and her stomach would literally sound like it is exploding from regular formula. And guess what, the small amounts of breast milk i would give here, were even worse, she just couldnt function at all, cried all the time and was in pain.
Alimentum worked wonders for us. Especially the ready to feed, it was perfect. The powder was good but not nearly as good as RTF.
SHe has tried yogurt melts and real yogurt etc without really the same reaction but a milder version of those same things. Right now i am in the process of trying to figure out if it is allergy or lactose intolerence.
Yes they grow out of dairy allergy usually, you will be able to tell when its time to introduce solids. If you give yougurt melts for example if it is a true allergy that will not be tolerated at all.

DD is 2 1/2 and is showing signs that she's growing out of it but we're not out of the woods yet.

Re: Anyones baby have a dairy allergy and grow out of it?
I think dairy allergy is very common to grow out of by age 2. Some kids are fine by 6-7 months because they just had an intolerance not a true allergy. Don't stress. My son is on Neocate and I'm not even that worried that he won't be able to have yogurt at a year. I think his digestive system is just immature and he can't digest large proteins.

Same here. She is definitely tolerating more milky products, but she still has to drink soy milk. I am hoping she grows out of it.

Re: Anyones baby have a dairy allergy and grow out of it?
DS had a milk protein allergy and was on Allimentum until 14 months old. We slowly switched him from that to milk and he is fine. He takes all dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese, etc) with no problem. Most kids do grow out of it.

Re: Anyones baby have a dairy allergy and grow out of it?
My DS is 3 and still severely, severely allergic. My DD showed many of the same symptoms while I was BFing so I eliminated dairy from my diet and her diet. She just turned one and I had her tested and she's not allergic to anything. I don't know if she grew out of it or if she never really was allergic.

Re: Anyones baby have a dairy allergy and grow out of it?
Thanks everyone.. is good to read a majority seems to grow out of. I just feel really guilty that I didnt give a better shot at the dairyfree diet so I could continue to BFed. Just dont think I would do right and afraid Ill do more harm than good for her.
