Our first grader had the flu this week ( our two year old was also Rockin a 103.5 fever all week) and we didn't do a blessed thing. Nothing. Haven't read a book. Haven't practiced math. . Not even educational apps- I don't even have any lol

Nope. But one of my twins has hw for kindergarten this week, not to mention the reading log we are supposed to every day. We are behind. Gotta catch up today. Ugh.

Yes. 6th and 8th
Take home tests, review packets for midterms, essays
At least we are home and they have made some time to do it
Apparently we live in a very competitive school district and our MS loves homework

Nope! Nothing! My twins are in K and my youngest pre-k and I had intended on doing writing and reading with them, but we got hit with the flu the day after Christmas and they still have it!

My DD is 5 and we all had the stomach virus. She's been doing some of her workbooks for words and reading a lot still.

Nope, nothing and I am fine with it. DS is in First and he has so many tests and enough homework. He needs a mental break from it all. It will all be back in full swing in a few days. I am enjoying the stress of not having to help him do it all and studying.

Yikes I feel bad for you guys with older kids
I figured older ones would have projects etc
I just felt like my 6year old was too lethargic and miserable to make him practice anything
We have a reading log too. I've lied about it for two months now.

Re: Anyone's kids do any work this vacation
My kids like to read. Some of their Hanukkah presents were books. They did not read every day of the break, but yes, they have read. Fourth and second grade.
To the parent who lied about the reading log, what kind of example are you setting for your kid? I feel badly for your child. You are teaching your kid it is ok to lie, to not do their work, and not instill a love of reading. How sad.

My DD is in 2nd grade. No work but she loves to read. So she read books every morning and night. She actually got a lot of books for Christmas and was super excited about it

Wow. Way to judge.
I'm a teacher and I've been lying on my kids' reading logs for years. They HATE to read and I'm done fighting about it. As long as they maintain good grades it's worth it to keep the peace in my home.
For what it's worth, my 8th grader has been on the highest honor roll for 9 consecutive quarters, is in National Junior Honor Society and is taking 9th grade regents math and science this year as an 8th grader.
My 6th grader plays competitive hockey 6 days a week, often at the rink until 10pm on school nights and only missed honor roll for his first quarter in middle school by 2/10 of a point.
I'd say my kids are doing okay, despite having a pathetic liar for a mother.

Re: Anyone's kids do any work this vacation
Are we supposed to? I thought Christmas vacation was to, you know, relax and recharge and make memories with family. As it is they have way too much work and pressure on them for their age IMO. Give the kids a break and let them be kids for once. I doubt it will affect their college entrance exams.

For what it's worth, I HATE reading and am pretty damn smart and successful. So much for a "love of reading " that everyone gushes about . Oh well. Like your kids prove you don't necessarily have to have a love of reading to do well in school. (And life).

Who am I?
I'm the mom who works in a school in queens who leaves her house at 630am and comes home at 430 two days a week and 3 the other three days.
I'm the mom who has a 6 year old who is low tone with low stamina. He's mentally and physically exhausted by the end of the school day. He receives OT and PT and Speech during the school day. Sometimes he misses class work that we have to make up, in addition to all the homework they get. And then I have to drag him to karate twice a week and swimming once a week either at 430 or 6pm. All several towns away from me. Because it's part of his physical therapy. And up until a few weeks ago I took him to vision therapy once a week at 5:00 for an hour session. All this is weekdays. On Sundays we go to church and Sunday school from 10-1230.
I'm the mom who has a very active two year old who I have to take with me to karate and swimming etc. because he cries and feels left out if I don't.
I'm the mom who cooks and cleans and does laundry all hours of the night.
I'm the mom that's also five months pregnant.
My six year old happens to love to read. He's a good student overall and a good reader. He's very insightful and he reads books he buys from his monthly book fairs often enough. Does he read a different book for 22 days each month, no. How could I possibly do that to him? When he's dragging his little behind and is physically and mentally exhausted from these long days, no, I don't feel bad lying about his stupid first grade reading log.
Im glad these reading logs are such a huge priority to you. Some people have bigger fish to fry. Don't judge. You don't know who anyone is, or why anyone does the things they do.
I started deleting all this because it's really none of your business but for some reason I decided to keep it. When I read what you wrote I thought to myself "oh go take a dump". But, I kept it here with the hope that you read this and think "Yeah I shouldn't judge people. Especially ones I don't know "

Don't feel the need to explain your life situation or parenting choices to someone who feels the need to judge others over a stupid 1st grade reading log. It must be nice to sit up on that high horse of morality while fostering the ever important love of reading.
PS....i also fake my daughter's reading logs. Because she has time on the weekends to read a week's worth of books. And she does. On her own. Because she likes books. (Despite having a bad, morally corrupt mom like we apparently are). So i use the books she LEGITIMATELY read over the weekend to fill her reading log during the week...when we have no time for reading between homework, extra projects and studying for the countless first grade math tests.
So far she is ahead of grade level in reading and got a glowing report card and an amazing report from her teacher about her academic ability at the parent teacher conference. And so far she hasn't turned into a serial killer or kleptomaniac from being exposed to such a morally reprehensible thing as her bad mom faking her reading logs. Amazing

As a teacher, I hate reading logs. Kids either love to read or not. Logging is not going to instill the love. It's such a bs assignment. Don't feel bad.

Re: Anyone's kids do any work this vacation
Look, everyone has issues. I am not saying they don't or its not hard to fit it in. There are nights we don't get home until almost 8 pm and still have to sit down for dinner and homework. I get it. I would rather you say ds read for 5 minutes or nothing but be honest about it. But that is just me. You do you and you don't have to explain OR justify it to me. Have a happy new year and may it be easier for all of us. I just think teaching kids honesty is the right way to do things.

Re: Anyone's kids do any work this vacation
Lol! Love these boards for the drama! We did zero work this week. That's my rule. We study every day and read every day except vacations (excluding summer) and weekends. DS and DD did read the brochures and signs where we went skiing. DS asked for math problems on a car ride. His foreign friend knows how to multiply and DS wanted to show he could too (mostly by 2 and 3 because he's counting). Thank goodness we have no reading logs!

Anyone's kids do any work this vacation
My kids don't get assigned homework over breaks...thank goodness! I have a 4th and 12th grader. I don't just make them do random learning crap over vacations either. It's a break...a break from school. Both kids got books for Christmas though, and read them in the car on the way to a getaway...their choice.
As for reading logs..hate them. No cheating on ours in 4th though. He makes them write page numbers, quotes, details, etc. when there is a written log. Other weeks they have to read off an internet site and take quizzes. Honestly, I think it makes kids loathe reading, since it's beyond annoying to have to write all the little detailed crap down from a book. It takes away from reading for "enjoyment" if you ask me and makes it a chore. My son had minimal reading logs during his younger years...very minimal. As an almost 18 year old, he loves to read...always has a book in his hand.

I understand.
I also understand the don't set an example of lying to your kid, however these reading logs are just ridiculous. We don't have a formal log to fill out, but part of my 7 yr olds homework is to read 15-20 minutes each school night. We have him read bedtime stories to his little brother as a way to kill two birds with one stone honestly, with a newborn preemie in the house and general craziness of having three kids. And sometimes we just don't get to it, and that's ok.
My DS loves reading and has always been an amazing reader way above grade level. I don't want to squeeze his love of reading out by making it a drudgery assignment checkbox he has to do every day of his life.
And FTR, we have done zero work this vacation. We have spent time together and they have played with their new toys in their pjs all week, which I am totally fine with. Isn't vacation supposed to be a break from work? Am I missing something?

I agree and that is why I was confused by this thread from the start.
It's like saying- I took a week of vacation time from my job and I feel SO guilty that I didn't log in and do work every day. I was like
Vacation = vacation. What work are they supposed to do? (unless the teacher assigned homework that is or they have a project due soon ,etc)
DD is in 1st grade and not only did she have no homework assigned for the vacation, the teacher wrote us a cute poem the week BEFORE the Christmas break about it being the week before Christmas and being so hectic and her gift to us was no homework that week either.
So she hasn't had homework or done anything in 2 weeks now.
I hope this doesn't affect her getting into Harvard. I hear they ask you on your application there what you did on your Chrismtas vacation when you were in the 1st grade and if you didn't do any work, you are OUT!
