Are there any foods that I should avoid when breastfeeding????
Besides the basic high mercury fish, raw fish and alcohol....are there any other foods I should not be eating when breastfeeding? I also tend to eat a lot of dairy (cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese ect...) is this okay?

Caffeine...and gassy veggies like broccoli or garlic...but your baby might not react badly to certain foods. I ate roasted garlic one night and my DS had a rough night. But def cut out caffeine.

You can basically eat anything you want when you are BFing unless your LO has a reaction. You can also have a glass of wine if you would like without having to pump and dump, so you really don't have to avoid alcohol completely.
Each child is different so besides the high mercury fish, it is hard to say what you should exactly avoid.
As for the dairy, watch your LO to see if you notice irritability. If you LO is very cranky, try cutting it down or eliminating it. Some babies do not react well to a lot of dairy, but you really need to see first how your baby reacts.
There are some foods that could be gas producing-onions, broccoli, beans-but it is really trial and error. Try something and if LO reacts, eliminate it.
I have a DD with a milk protein allergy, so I can't have any dairy or soy, as well as a list of other allergens. But my DD was arching, screaming and had blood in her poop.
Good luck and happy nursing!
ETA-oops-forgot to say caffeine. Some babies do okay with it. Some do not. My DD is not good with it. If you can avoid it, avoid it.

Re: Are there any foods that I should avoid when breastfeeding????
I eat everything, including spicy food and luckily, nothing bothers my LO. For some, they have to limit veggies, dairy, and spicy foods.
I also drink alcohol on occasion. If I don't feel the effects and feel safe enough to drive, I'm good to go for BFing too. I never pump and dump.

Re: Are there any foods that I should avoid when breastfeeding????
I am still breastfeeding after one year and I haven't limited anything, I have always done things in moderation. I drink 1-2 glass of wine ( when he was younger i drank after I feed him) Now if I can't drive and I can't BF. I only drink one cup of coffee a day. If you try to not worry it makes bF easier. good luck!

The only things that seemed to bother both my DC was kielbasa, fast food and peppers/sausage.

Re: Are there any foods that I should avoid when breastfeeding????
Depends on your DC. If you notice that DC is extra sensitive to something then try and limit it. I noticed early on that DS was sensitive to caffeine so I cut it out of my diet for a while. I also noticed he would become very gassy from cooked broccoli, but now raw. That was hard for me to stay away from, I LOVE broccoli! You can drive yourself crazy with all the foods that can make DC gassy though!

Thank you for all the advice ladies. So far I have been eating how I normally have ---I am vegetarian and eat a lot of dairy and so far so good. We are doing great with breastfeeding/pumping

I never avoided any foods while breastfeeding, except for alcohol, of course.
