are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

Time for a thread where we appreciate little, thoughtful gestures. Chat Icon

I remember when I was studying for the bar exam, my cousin's wife sent me a card, about halfway between graduation and the bar exam. She wrote a nice little note and included a $15 Starbucks gift card. Even several years later, I always remember thinking how nice it felt to know someone was thinking of me and wishing me well while I was in the middle of all the craziness and stress.

Obviously there have been plenty of people who did big, huge things for me in my life for which I eternally grateful... but I thought it would be nice to have a thread where we remember the "little" things that meant a lot to us.

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

a patient I worked with at the Island Spine Center gave me a card with $20 in it before my first ever trip to Italy to have a "cappucino on her". she was from there, and we were always talking about it. she was so happy for me that I was finally able to go.

I remember her always, very fondly. Chat Icon

When I was a BROKE college student and going to study abroad. My IL's ( just my BF's parents at the time! ) gave me a card with a LOT of cash in it. I think I lived off of it for the first three weeks. Because of their generosity I was able to fully experience my trip and not just hibernate and count pennies!

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

love this thread- there are so many things that I am grateful but the one that sticks out in my mind is something very tiny and seemingly insignificant.

I was really stressed when i was planning my wedding last year and dh who is usually completely oblivious- took me out and let me pick the movie (i never get to pick the movie) and he sat through Mamma Mia. He hated it and still talks about how awful it was- but just that he tried to do something to make me happy was so sweet!

I have to add this one

my husband did the dishes on Sunday night.

my husband DOES NOT DO DISHES. like, ever.

but I was sick, and he felt bad enough to do them for me. even though I said I would.

Great thread!

1st thing that came to mind was when DH was in the hospital.
It happened to be my birthday during this 6 week period. He was really upset he couldn't get me a gift. So one of the nurses took him to the gift shop with her own $20 and let him pick out anything he wanted for me. He picked out a key chain and some bangle bracelets.
I think of her all time since I use this key chain everyday.

I thought this was one of the nicest things anyone did for him. He was so proud to have something for me.

I will never forget my Lit teacher in college. She nominated me for a writing award, which I won. Up until that point I never really thought I was very smart. But that award changed everything for me in my education. It gave me such a boost in confidence and I wound up graduating college with honors.

One of the students I had been helping when I was a teaching assistant wrote to the professor telling him how helpful I was to her in learning statistics. I just thought it was very sweet of her.

i'm smack in the middle of a pity party... so not much is coming to mindChat Icon

then, something did come to mind.
on my wedding day, my father hugged me... he then whispered in my ear that i'm his favorite. it still makes me cry. remembering that moment has helped me deal with all the cr@p going on in my life right now, because someone i love loves me the best.

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

My husband forgot to buy me a Valentines Day card one year.

He realized it too late.

He told me he had to go to the bathroom. Turns out, he locked himself in there & drew a Valentines Day card himself out of markers & colored pencils- Complete with cute stick figures & hearts.

I will never forget it. EVER.

when i was a freshmen in college and broke.... i went to pick up my mail one day and found a fat envelope. inside was a note from my sister (just as young and just as broke) and $20.00 in singles! i'll never forget that... it wasn't a lot of money, but it was a lot for her and meant a lot to me at the time.

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

My mom was really sick and I had gone over to DH's (then just a boyfriend) house for the weekend like I usually did.

I must have been really exhausted because he let me sleep all weekend long, didn't bother me and made sure I ate.

Another thing I will never forget is how a friendship blossomed.
I was to meet friends of DH's (again during the boyfriend phase) at their BBQ party. My mom meanwhile passed away and this couple came to the wake. I had never met them before, but they wanted to come. It really meant a lot.

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

when we were first dating my bf (now dh) knew how much I loved to write and I was taking all these creative writing courses in college... and he surprised me with a poem he wrote about me! it was so amazing because he hates to write and isn't interested in it at all and it was the most special piece of writing i ever received. I still have it.. i'll always cherish it

When I was going through my IVF cycle, my best friend sent me a card with a really sweet note written inside it. The actual card was in spanish, so I couldn't read it...but she liked the picture on the card!Chat Icon

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

I will never forget the people who sent gifts to me or directly to my brother at the holidays so he&his fellow troops could have a little happiness at the holidays. I was amazed by how many people cared enough to do that. And it 100% made their day-to receive these tokens of kindness from complete strangers.

Gestures like that are what keep me going when times are tough.

Also....when I was at a very low point last year and very upset over my sons development, my best friend really helped me through it by listening to me and telling me what a great mom I was and how lucky Johnny was to have me. Those words really stayed with me...even when you KNOW in your heart that you are a good mom/person, its nice to be reminded when times get rough!

Several years ago I had a serious health emergency that I needed to go to the hospital for. I lived in the city by myself and my entire family lives in FL. Not only did my friend come to the hospital with me at 10 pm and stay the entire night with me but my other friend took the entire next day off of work so I did not have to be alone. To this day I appreciate that more than words can ever express.

Re: are there some "little things" you remember that mean a lot to you?

A few things:

1. My "Aunt" - not really by blood..she taught me how to tie my shoes when I was 4 or 5, to bake, took me shopping for my prom dress, lots of things. I'll never forget it. She was always there for me to do the motherly things that my absentee mother didn't do.

2. My husband, well it's too long of a list. But he was patient, loving and kind after my previous abusive relationship.

I was about 18, and in the city with a friend, 4am, and found out my car got towed. We go to the yard to claim the car, never having my car towed b4, i didnt realize their was a fine! 300 bucks to get my car out. So me and my girlfriend are both standing there, on the west side highway, with no car no $$, one of the guys that just got his car out, comes over and offers us a ride to the bank. I only have 200 in my account, we get back into the car and tell the guy whats going on. He gives us the 100 bucks to get the car out, saying i have girls close to your age, and if they got stranded i would hope someone would help them out. Looking back, i see we COULD have been in danger, jumping into a strange mans car at 4am, we could have been raped and murdered. I often still think of that kind man and wish i had his address to repay him :) I hope he is well.

I was in a creative writing class in college. The prof asked everyone to take 10 minutes and write about someone in class- There were about 20 people in the class and about 16 of them chose me! When I am feeling down or out of sorts it always cheers me up because I must have some kind of light inside meChat Icon
