When you actually had to get up to change the channel on the TV.

I would lay on the floor and my mom would go next, next, next...

She would flip out if I spun the dial really fast.

Chat Icon I remember the remotes that had the wire.

Re: OLD things you remember

I remember smoking in restaurants and airplanes. I remember the wire attached to the TV for the remote control, and rotary phones. I don't remember Ford as president, but he was the president when I was born.

I remember Carter as president, and does anyone remember when the Iran hostages were released? I think that's my earliest news-worthy memory. Next would be Reagan getting shot.

I wonder how many people here aren't old enough to remember that, or when the Challenger exploded?...not a disparaging comment, I'm really just curious.

I vividly remember the Challenger. I must have been in 4th grade ... my 3rd grade teacher was one of the finalists to be the teacher on board. They wheeled TVs into our classrooms to show the take-off ... so we all watched it as it happened. Chat Icon

ETA: later it was something my mom compared to learning that JFK had been shot when she was growing up ... something you'll always remember where you were when it happened.

Am I THAT old? I had 8 tracks and record albums growing up - I used to buy 45s with my allowance money. I used to fight with my siblings about who would have to get up to change the channel.

I also remember pop tops on soda and beer cans, and chewing gum wrappers actually had real foil on waxed paper. We took a family cross country road trip in 1977 and I remember my mom being outraged that gas was $0.75 a gallon at the only station off the interstate. Chat Icon

Re: OLD things you remember

I also remember how my brother and I used to be jumping all over the car while my parents were driving. We used to lay in the back of the station wagon and laugh when we would slide around. Now my parents would go to jail for endangering the welfare of a minor for that.Chat Icon

Re: OLD things you remember

-8 Tracks (I was using these forever which is kind of disturbing. I guess I liked the retro factor Chat Icon I mean seriously, I remember making a Bon Jovi mixed 8 track tape! Chat Icon)
-record turntables (I used them up til the late 80's too!)
-The Cable Box!! Remember the one with the number buttons on it you had to press down? And it had this looong wire attached to the tv!
-VCR non-wireless remote (yes another long wire!)
-rotary dial phones.Chat Icon
