Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
I usually make sure one nap is at home (generally the morning one) and the other we wing. They'll usually nap in the stroller if I'm walking or running errands. Come summer, I'll probably take them out earlier and be home for the afternoon nap - just so that they're still comfortable napping in their cribs.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
For the most part yes. At least over the last 12 months i made sure we were home for both naps which meant i only had about 2-3 hrs of time to run out and do stuff in between naps. But now that she is almost 15 mos i have been more lax about her taking both naps. If we have to really be somewhere i will wing the 2nd nap but make sure she takes the 1st nap. Even when we were on vacation we didn't head out of the hotel till her 1st nap was done.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
I've always been confused about this....
I've taken DD everywhere I need to go - i don't really organize my schedule around hers unless its feeding time and i make sure we are in a comfortable place and I have a high chair - most times I make sure I am home when she has breakfast and I usually don't go out until after her first nap - but if I have too - I don't make it stop me and she usually sleeps in the car, stroller, mom's house - whereever I am at the moment.
My whole point is for her to get used to other surroundings and be able to eat, fall asleep wherever she is.
I have a few friends who will leave a get together early or always be late because they have to make sure they feed their children at home and have there naps at home - otherwise they the children are completely cranky. I understand crankiness is not fun to deal with - but isn't it better you get the child acquainted to other surrounding and not a set schedule every single day.....?
If my daughter misses her nap - 99% of the time -she will fall asleep earlier and probably wake up a bit earlier - its not an everyday thing but something I can deal with once in awhile...

Before i had my DD this is exactly how i pictured it to be. Some children adapt well to falling asleep anywhere at anytime. Then there are those who like my child love the so called "scheduled" routine. IMHO i don't think kids sleep well in the car or strollers- yes they will catch a cat nap here and there but that isn't really sound sleep. eta: as DD gets older i am more relaxed on the napping at home thing. I do though make sure if we can be home for one of them we are.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
I completely agree that stroller naps and car naps aren't always power naps - but i guess my point was that its okay if once in awhile the child is not on schedule - its just really important to not feel a prisoner and be able to get out of the house and run errands without having to revolve over the child's schedule every single time. **Im alittle sensitive to my friend who is so on schedule with her child - she barely is able to talk on the phone, visit or run errands**

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
when he was under 1 year and in the infant seat i brought him everywhere infact it was easier for him to nap in the car, when he got older he wouldnt nap in the car anymore and his mood greatly depended on his naps so yes ive been a prisnor to his schedule. He naps from 12-2 and during this time I dont plan anything. He doesnt sleep wel at night either if he doesnt nap well so this is very important to me.

Yes i agree that once in a while, special occassion, etc it is not detrimental to the childs health if you veer from their sleep schedule. And as they get older it gets easier for them as well to stay up longer. It's all about what works for your DC overall.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
DD's all about the power naps and as much as I've tried she doesn't really follow a schedule so I try to feed her well before we leave and if she falls asleep I have the stroller if not being out really tires her so I can usually get a good nap out of her when we get home. Not that the weather is getting nicer and nicer I refuse to stay home anymore!

Same here... DD hasn't napped in the stroller for so long and was never good at "napping anywhere". She's not that kind of baby so I just deal with being home when she naps, it's not that big of a problem anymore.

That's not always true either. Steven sleeps just as well in his stroller or in the car or wherever we are. He will sleep even though it's loud and he will sleep for as long as he wants. We went to the circus and he fell asleep a little after 1/2 way thorugh, right on his normal schedule, and stayed asleep for 2 hours. He even slept through someone being shot out of a cannon
It does really depend on your child and you have to go along according to their needs.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
I just started bringing ds places but he has had no problem sleeping wherever we go. He's actually sleeping in his car seat right now, I got home about an hour ago and he's sleeping soundly since around 2:30.

same here, as long as they have their morning nap...they will be fine, sometimes Matthew will get cranky if he doesnt have a nap in the afternoon, but will nap in the car

I don't stay home due to his nap schedule, but no way does he nap anywhere. He actually only naps on me.
Sometimes we will be out and I will hold him at the park, but I have to run errands too...

We're in a similar situation. Brendan will only nap in his crib or in a pack n play if we're at someone else's house. He almost never napped in the stroller and a few months ago he stopped napping in the car too. Usually I try to get whatever I need to get done between his morning and afternoon nap, but if I have something I need to do I try to at least make sure we're home for one of the naps.

same here................and it doesnt throw him off for the rest of the day/night! He adapts very well to change and different environments...
ETA: if he is napping and I have an appt or need to run an errrand, I will just put him in his car seat and he would fall back to sleep once I started driving~

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
DD was a 2 nap a day for 2 hours or more....I never felt like a prisoner. I was glad she was a good sleeper and it made her a happier baby which was important to me.
When she got a little older, I'd let her nap in the AM then take her to my off the books job and hope she'd nap there, but it was always a shorter nap than if she was at home.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
I am to some extent though not really. I let her have her am nap at home and then we go out after lunch. She catches the pm one in the car on the way home usually. She does sleep longer and better in her crib so I see the point about the quality of sleep, but I have to get out at some point during the day or else I'd go crazy.

Re: Are u a prisnor due to nap times?
Nope! I just go even if it's nap time. If he's really tired he'll sleep in the car or stroller. If he fights it then he doens't get a nap. Sometime he gets a little cranky b/c of it but I refuse to be a "prisoner" JMO though
