Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?

I really want to try and do it drug free. Whatever happens happens when I am actually there though.

Hell No!

I have low pain tolerance.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?

I went in with the mindset of "Let's see how it goes". I went into labor at 6am and didn't get to the hospital until 2:30pm. The contractions were bad, but bearable with breathing. I asked for an epi at 8pm about 2 hours after they broke my water. I tried to hold out but the contractions were really bad and I couldn't get through them w/out tears. (my son was born at 2:38 am the next day)

people laugh at me when i say drug free. I think I am going to do the same and tell them I don't know, or unsure, but I really think I could give it my best to go without drugs

People always laugh at me when I tell them I want to go drug free, too. I think as long as you prepare yourself by taking classes (Bradly, Hypnobabies, etc.) and you have a doctor who is supportive of you (I'm probably switching to a mid-wife for this very reason) it is certainly possible. I try not to make a big deal out of it one way or another, because people love to tell me "just wait," but I really want to go drug-free!

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?

I have thought about it - what I found out at my Prenatal classes was that at the hospital I am giving birth in, they set you up with an IV, just to get fluids in you. So that if you decide after a while, you want medication, you will have enough fluids in you for the medication. Sometimes, it takes up to 2 hours to get enough fluids in you and then you might have to wait for someone to give you the medication. So for this system, I am grateful. So if I decide I want something, I am ready to go and shouldn't have to wait to long for anything.

I know its a long way off for me, but I have thought about it a lot. The way I see it is like this, I know I am a tough cookie, but I don't really feel like I have to prove it . Especially after carrying this child inside me for 9 months. I want the drugs.

I always went into L&D with an open mind.. and in my case that meant loading me up on drugs the second the anest. (or Dr. Feelgood and I called him/her lol) came in to introduce him/herself lol

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?

I know I do have a high tolerance for pain, but I am keeping an open mind.
I'll have to let how i'm feeling dictate whether or not I opt for them or not.
there is now way I can say either way now- I've never given birth before.

yes, I will try to do it drug free. My mom did it for four kids, so I don't see why I can't do it. Chat Icon

I feel the same way. My mother did it 6 times. People do it...I think other poster was correct too, it helps to have doctor on board.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?

This is baby #2 for me, so I already have an idea of what I'm to expect. Last time labor was so intense and lasted 53 hours, I got the Epi 6 hours before I pushed. If not, I think I would have been just too wiped-out and exhausted to be aware of what was going on around me. If nothing else,it gave me a few hours to rest.
Some people tolerate pain easier than others,my sister had 2 kids- no Epi.
I'm gonna play it by ear but as of right now,it is more than just an option,I'm leaning toward requirement.

This is exactly why I won't completely rule out the Epi. In some cases of really long labor , it can help you get the rest you need. But, in general, I am going to prepare myself to avoid it. To me, it's not worth the risks involved.

I am going into it with a drug free delivery on my mind. Of course, like everyone else I think you can't really know until you're in there going through it what you can take and what you can't. But at the core I believe that this is what our bodies are designed to do so obviously we're capable so it's really all in our minds and it's a matter of your threshold for pain.

You said it perfectly. Our bodies were 100% designed for the experience, thats why contractions come every few minutes- not every 3 seconds, i guess,to give you a "natural" rest.

Contractions are the weirdest thing..one minute you'll be like
"what the *%^#%%&^ was that!" the pain cannot be put into words.
Then the next minute you're like
" so as I was saying, who do you think will win AI?" A real Roller Coaster.

I think I'm more afraid of a needle in my spine than of the contractions- but I guess I won't know until I experience them! Chat Icon

Yeah, I agree. Good news is that they at least numb the area before the big needle comes.
