Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
TAKE THE PAIN MEDS!!! I have gotten the epi with 2 of my kids and my last one was wothout any meds and it was not a fun ride, it was totally UNPLEASANT (to put it mildly), I enjoyed borthing my daughters because I was relaxed and painfree, with my son, forget it, I truly became delusional because of the pain and I have a VERY high pain tolerance (I walk aroud needing teeth pulled or weeks) Take the meds ladies, trust me!!! Our bodies are indeed made to borth a child, but the pi was also made for a reason as well!! Good luck to all, in th eend whatever your decision, the gift is priceless!!
p.s- I will tell you that my son (born without meds) was much more alert than my daughters who were born with an epi, and they doc attributed it to no meds (that kind of scared me to think that such yound newbons were exposed to such high tensity pain meds)

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
NO NO NO. No way. I wasn't planning on going drug free and let me just say that once the really intense contractions started, I seriously don't know what I would have done had an epidural not be available to me. As itr was they didn't give me the epi til I was 7 cms...and I had hours of painful painful labor...I don't want to scare anyone or try to deter anyone from going natural, but at the same time, I just want to share my experience, this was the most painful thing I ever wernt through in my life.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
emilain -- Were you planning/prepared to go drug free with your son or did something happen that prevented you from getting the epi? Just wondering, b/c most of the experiences I have heard from people who were not happy w/ natural childbirth have come from people who never planned on going drug-free, but circumstances ended-up that they had to.
The point about your son being more alert is one of the reasons I want to avoid drugs.

well, I was undecided as I walked into the ER, and I was real calm and quiet and thought to myself "Ithink I can do this", then the last 2 hrs before he was born were UNREAL, so I decided I need meds NOW, no anestesiologist showed up so I did it with no meds. I really thought I would die, and I think I told my husband a fw times that I was going to die and to take good care of the kids, it was intense beyond words. But more power to you women who decide and follow through w/ natural childbirth, you are my heros!

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I went natural and not by choice...as soon as they told me I was being admitted I aske for the Epi. They told me I had to wait for my Dr to come to Ok it and low and behold I went for being in early labor for 36 hours to going into hard labor QUICK!! my Dr. did not make it in time so needless to say I never got any drugs. I have to tell you yes it was painful but it was not as bad as I thought it would be I would have NEVER thought I could handle going natural but I did and I am even considering doing it the next time

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I went it with that mentality in but all those lamaze classes went out the window once I started contracting so bad that I literally was shaking uncontrolably.
Epi was my godsend, from then on it was smooth sailing.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I had every intention of going drug free and even took hypnobirthing classes. I had back labor and my labor went fairly quickly at the hospital. The pain was intense and I feel like a failure but I only had the epidural in for about and hour before my son was born. If I am blessed to be pregnant again I will still try to go drug free. I hope I don't have back labor again!

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I am not pregnant but lurking and this has been on my mind for a while since we will TTC one day soon.
Is there a reason why its more painful for some? Does it have anything to do with your history or anything?
My SIL had 5 kids (including 1 set of twins) with no drugs so I am leaning towards that....but thats what I say right now when I am not even pregnant.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I'm going in with the opinion that if I need the drugs, I'll take them. If I can handle it without, I'll try that. I don't think I have a very high pain tolerance, but who knows.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I'm such a baby (no pun intended) when it comes to pain
I was so paranoid about how painful losing my virginity was going to be. Squeezing a human being through that place - now that is something I am paranoid about.
In all honesty, if I don't have to have a c-section, I will try my best, but I think I'll end up going for the drugs.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I had no plans on going epi free.. Actually, my contractions were so horrible, the minute I got to the hospital, I asked fo rmy epi (I was 7 cm already). ONce the epi kicked in, I was a new woman and would do it all again with the drugs.

My SIL had 5 kids (including 1 set of twins) with no drugs so I am leaning towards that....but thats what I say right now when I am not even pregnant.
It depends a lot on the person and the situation -- including the L&D nurses. It is much more difficult to labor w/out drugs and some hospital conventions, ie. IV, continous monitoring restrict your movement and make it really hard to go w/out the drugs. It also helps to have taken childbirth classes like Bradly and Hypnobirthing/Hypnobabies (not just lamaze) and have a doctor/midwife who believes you can go drug-free.
My advice is to do research on the risks of the drugs and then decide what is most important to you. Personally, I don't want to take on the risks of the drugs, unless absolutely necessary, so I plan on doing everything possible -- taking classes, switching to a midwife -- to set myself up for natural childbirth success. Both my mother and my MIL had natural childbirth -- it's not as uncommon as many people would have you think!

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
It all depends on if I'm allowed to have the VBAC or not. If I am, I would love to try for a drug-free delivery.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
I'm not sure if this helps anyone who is looking for a drug free birth. I went in with the attitude that I was going to try it, but wasn't going to be a martyr about it. If the pain was too intense, I was going to opt for the epi. I wasn't crazy about having drugs to stop the pain & slow labor, only to have to be given more drugs to speed up labor - and all of that going through the baby's little body.
I took a Bradley course which I think really helped (even though I wouldn't recommend the instructor, I'd recommend the class).
If anyone has any questions, feel free to FM me. I've had two births drugfree - although the second one probably shouldn't count since I was only in labor for 1.5 hours & had her in 7 minutes.
The one thing I will say is for those that have in mind a drug free birth or are adamantly opposed to having drugs, please don't beat yourself up if you need to opt for pain medication. I was so sad to hear my friend who gave birth after me say that she was disappointed that she "wimped out". She had a healthy baby boy - which is the entire point no matter how you get him. The percentage of pain medication in the US is extremely high. It's the exception that can do it without. I was just lucky to have easy labors.

Re: Are you going into this experience with a drug free delivery on your mind?
HMMMM, Im not sure, my SIL had a natural no meds and she said it was like someone had a blow torch there and it was PAINFUL- she wanted meds but it was too late to give them to her the baby was coming and fast.
My other SIL said to me and I quote- "Janice dont try to be a hero get the meds!!!" so Im gonna get them I think as for now at least- I guess when the time comes and I am in too much pain and cant handle the contractions then I would but if they are tolerable I will try no meds.
