Yup.. this is actually something that's been going on for a while!

That's why I always have a kit at the places I go to so that i don't have to use the supplies that were used on other people that may have fungus or anything else..

I go to a cheapie place too, but they pull out tools from sterilizer before they sit down with you, so that works for me.

This has been going on since the beginning of time. If you are worried just make sure they clean the equipment. Theres a place I go to where if you don't have your own files they charge you $2.00 for a set and then they give them to you....

I think the issue is with those tubs you soak your feet in.
They clean them- put topically.
They say the fungus and bacteria can live in those jets.

I got a fungus last year and I can't get rid of it.
My big toenail has not been the same since!

I have been to various nail salons since I was 12 and have never got any fungus on hands or feet so I am not worried. Maybe some people are more susceptible?

I go to a nice, clean place and I luckily have never had a problem.
I was horrified when my bachelorette party was a "spa day" at NuBest in Manhasset & my good friend got a horrible toe fungus from a pedi there Chat Icon Chat Icon

It was just on, they had a dermatologist on who said that the UV lights damage your skin and could increase the risk of skin cancer.

I like the gel manicures, but I think that it would mess up your nails by stripping off the gel every 2 weeks or so. I only get them done when I have a wedding or if I'm going on vacation.

Re: Are you ladies hearing this? Re: Salons -Mani/Pedi's?

For ladies who got a fungus, the only way to get rid of it, Lamisil Pills.

I saw a foot doc who treated it this way cause it was so severe.
Took blood, gave me script, it was for 3mths and they ck up again to make sure is ok.

The nails grow out and are normal again.
Best time to do it is in winter, to have normal nails for summer.

ITA. I've always heard this but never had an issue and I've gone to some pretty cheap-o places. As long as they clean everything properly, you should be good.

That's exactly right. That's why they say not to shave your legs right before a pedi (supposedly makes it easier for the bacteria to get into your system) and that you may be safer if you get the first appointment of the day (based on the assumption that the tubs are thoroughly cleaned the night before)

You can actually buy a powder to throw into the tub that will kill the bacteria (I can't remember the name of it - I bought it @ Sally Beauty Supply last year).

I ended up getting warts on my feet b/c they did not clean the jets out properly. I will not put my foot in a a pedicure /whirlpool thing ever again! They swore they cleaned it- yes- topically , but not the jets!( This was a cheapie place, it looked clean , and they did give a good foot massage) I almost had to have surgery on it to get them off! It took almost 8 months and it had to get frozen off. NEVER again. For my regular nails I have my own kit, and I go to an American clean place.

I don't want to tempt fate, but I've never had a problem.

I have my own kit of stuff I bring, I don't use their tools, including a few different kinds of nail files.

My place also sprays the pedicure sink with foaming lysol between every customer.

this freaks me out. i rarely go for either because of fear of this. I've been giving myself pedi's in a home foot spa for a while now.

I can't do as good a job on manicures as the salon thoChat Icon

Hmm, I guess this explains why some women bring a thick plastic garbage bag and make the nail tech put it into the tub so they can soak in there, rather than directly into the "communal" pedicure sink...

Re: Are you ladies hearing this? Re: Salons -Mani/Pedi's?

I got a bad infection on my big toe a few years ago from them cutting the cuticle or pushing back the cuticle. Podiatrist told me the cuticle is there to KEEP BACTERIA/FUNGUs OUT. That he might have to remove my toenail if the infection did not clear.Chat Icon Luckily it did clear up with abs but I have never stepped foot in a salon since then and prefer to not set myself up for others germs anymore. Having pretty nails is not worth risking my health for me.

Re: Are you ladies hearing this? Re: Salons -Mani/Pedi's?

The kits are fine but the jets need to be sprayed well. As for gell manicures, I am going to stop because my nails are stripped too much.

Re: Are you ladies hearing this? Re: Salons -Mani/Pedi's?

I have a horrible toe fungus now that I am fighting to get rid of. I am not sure which place I got it from since I bounced around last summer and I am ******. I loved getting a pedi and now my toes look terrible.

For the ladies that had the fungus do you do your own toes now or how did you find a place that was trustworthy? I would love to get a pedi one day again but I am scared to get this back.

But if the fungus/bacteria lives in the jets, then wouldn't this be a non-issue? The water is still flowing through those jets and although their feet aren't touching 'the tub', the water is what is carrying the bacteria. Or do you mean that these women don't use the whirlpool tub at all? I've never seen this done. I luckily have never had a problem but will support the Lamisil that another poster mentioned. That should work, but it's true that your effected nail is usually different afterwards.

And about the gel possibly causing cancer?... I had never heard that Chat Icon That's scary as I use gel and the light when I get my nails done.
