Are you looking for a fixer upper?

How many of us are looking for a fixer upper rather than a completely updated house?

I'm looking for new construction or completely updated. If I have to fix, I might as well stay in my own house and completely re-do it.

I would much rather save some money and update the house to my tastes.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

total fixer upper. My husband is a carpenter and sometimes I see these totally renovated homes with decor (ie bathrooms/kitchens/carpets/paint) that is totally not my style. I personally hate white & black combo and so many kitchens are amazing, but with white formica cabinets. I would want to replace them anyhow. Its all about a homes bones & location. I would love to find somewhere that doesn't need massive renovations (ie roof, siding, windows). Those can get expensive fast.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

With both houses we picked fixer-uppers... we saw plenty of nice houses in our price range but I'm not comfortable with the idea of moving into someone else's style and choices... I like to start from scratch and create something that fits my needs and tastes perfectly... and anyway, it saves a LOT of money considering we do most of the renovations ourselves...

I checked fixer upper because that was what we were looking for. What we ended up with was something that needed updating but not a major fixer upper.

unless I was having a house built I wouldnt want someone else's updates..... I want to do all of that stuff myself. that's half the fun, right?

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

not sure, we keep going back and forth on it.
it probably depends on how much work it would need, because we don't really have a lot of money to to repairs, and I wouldn't want to be in a house that needed a lot of fixing... if it needed paint, some flooring, etc. fine - but if the kitchen needed to be gutted, then no. And i don't mean out of date- I mean gutted!

who can afford the FIXING is my question Chat Icon

Fixer uppers are great if you have a handy DH or carpenters in the family, etc, but a house that needs alot of work comes with the major headaches of dealing with contractors, repairs, and not to mention - where do you get the money for all the work! I've been going through so much BS just trying to get some moldings done in my LR - something you would think would be such an easy task. Plus the older the house, the more problems you are going to run into when you try to update. Trust me, I know from experience...everytime we decide to improve something in our house, it's a much bigger job than it seems...and all because the house is old.

I voted for not lifting a finger, although that is definitely not how I feel. I don't mind doing things to a house. but IMO, if you're going to pay close to 1/2 a million $$ for a house, you shouldn't HAVE to lift a finger.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

I voted for fixer, but i mean cosmetically a fixer. im not looking to tear down the house, but i dont mind it being "outdated" - id rather change it to the way i like it.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

We were open to anything - updated, fixer-upper, needs updating - whatever was in our range, in any of the areas we wanted and had good bones.

In the end we bought a home that needs updating (we gutted the bathroom prior to moving in as well as refinished the floors)...and will remove more wallpaper and pineboard in the kitchen. The house was also updated in other ways - Anderson windows, CAC, IGS, ceramic tile in the kitchen (though not my taste, still nicer than the linoleum that was prevalent in the homes built in the 50s), etc.

So I chose fixer upper. Honestly, any house in any range will need work/updating. I have never seen a house that I would walk right into and not touch a thing. We all have such different taste - it would be impossible to find your house unless you built it.

Ditto!Chat Icon

We'd all prefer a house built to our standards, but it's just not going to happen unless we move OOS and that's just NOT going to happen for us.

We actually are excited about finding a home and making it our own...

I'm sorry that you find it so annoying that we complain about a 1200 sq foot house which costs $400K with $7K a year in taxes, that needs work!

dont even bother, not worth it. If anyone can find a completely updated home as their first home, good for them.

I find it hard to believe that so many people put they want a fixer-upper, but yet all we see on the boards lately are complaints about homes that are fixer uppers.
