I voted for fixer - who can afford an updated house as a first time homebuyer on LI these days??
I DID!
BTW, me too Kristin. My house needed no major work, only new carpets and painting.
And I bet that I make a lot less money than most of you here.

I find it hard to believe that so many people put they want a fixer-upper, but yet all we see on the boards lately are complaints about homes that are fixer uppers.
I complain about the PRICE of the fixer upper, not that its a fixer upper
did ya see the house that had caught fire in E. Npt for almost $400?? come on now....

I want a fixer up with potential not to have to knock it down and start over. I think alot of the houses posted have very little potential that is why people complain

It never ends!
Anyway, getting back to the original question...I was looking for either new construction or "newer" construction (meaning not brand new, but less than 15 years old). I got the latter.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
If we had found a house in mint condition that was done in a style we liked I wouldnt have minded buying one - ofcourse those woulda been alot more $$
We bought a fixxer upper and we're doing the whole house over..just interior not expanding or anything. Im happy we did it this way cuz we're doing everything according to our taste.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
When we were looking on LI, we were going for a fixer-upper, but even that was more than we wanted to spend. So, we are moving to NC and found a brand new house that we loved! I only wish it was here so that I can be with my family....

I voted for not lifting a finger, although that is definitely not how I feel. I don't mind doing things to a house. but IMO, if you're going to pay close to 1/2 a million $$ for a house, you shouldn't HAVE to lift a finger.
JMO
I agree. DH and I are not handy. I'd rather not have to do anything except possibly paint some rooms. For the amount we're willing to pay, I don't think we should have to do major updating.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
I do think that you have to be willing to spend the extra money then. DH and I paid about 10K more for our house then the houses in the area were valued at 2 years ago, because we didn't want to have to do the work.
We didn't complain about paying more, we knew that for what we wanted we had to!

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
Other
and in this case i think OTHER is needed
we do not mind gutting a bath or even a kitchen...
I do not mind if i have to finish the basement and do the touches that will make the home MY HOME
BUT i am not into doing major reconstruction of the home itself..
so we are kinda in the middle

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
I can't see doing major construction on a 1/2 million dollar house either and not that i can even afford that but its the point. in this market, some of these houses are way overpriced for the amount of work that needs to go into them. its as if i'm paying 450 for a house that needs at least 50 or more of renovations. its too sad if you ask me. but we'll buy whatever we find in our price range and in the areas that we like. just think a few years ago to say i'm looking at houses that are going for 1/2 million it was unheard of for most people..now its all that's out there AND THEY NEED WOOOOORRKK

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
When we purchased our home it needed updating and we did it all our selves. Looking back though I would have rather found a home that all I do was paint and maybe refinish floors if necessary.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
we bought over two years ago, but fixers were all we looked at. My DH would never be happy with anyone elses work & we knew we wanted to make it ours. I had no idea how much the house we actually bought would need (everything). However it is a much better house with a bigger yard & great view so it was worth it. Also there are lots of unfinished projects, we are ok with that. We plan to be here forever so we'll get it all done. I think our generation has a weird thing about instant gratification with home ownership. I remember having an empty living room with no carpet for a couple of years when my parents bought the house I grew up in. The house was a foreclosure & the grass was taller than me when we moved in, it took time to make it a home.
