Posted by Meaghan729 and people say "worry about prices now, not what they were in the past". well I worry about what they were in the past because when people who couldnt afford their own homes only FIVE years later - thats an economical problem!!!
five years?
my parents house well...the difference in price from when they bought it to when they will sell it
is astronomical
it is a part of life..
of course over the course of thirty years a house is going to apprecate nicely. thats the reason to buy one - no mortgage when you retire!!
but 100% appreciation in FIVE years? thats insane and has never happen since tracking home prices.
people who bought five years ago, if wages increase in a normal manner, should be able to "buy" their house again!

what I get a kick out of is the co-workers at DH's job who all bought their homes 15+ years ago telling him "well you both work, you can do it, other people do it!"
clueless!!!!!! and when DH asked them "could you afford your house if you had to buy it today"? they all say no
so true
so true
and lets face it...live hasn't altered all that much in any other area
so it is kinda freaky

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?
My answer is other...
Our house is not in mint condition, nor was it a fixer upper. Previous owners put in new bathrooms and re-sheetrocked and repainted the entire first floor. THey also re-sided and re-roofed the house and finished the wood floors. Before moving in, we repainted (after fixing the walls) all rooms on the second floor, and had new carpeting installed on the second floor and staircase. That said, the house is in pretty good condition, but our kitchen is outdated. I will live with the formica cabinets until we have the money to replace them with what I really want. We didn't settle, however our house is smaller than other that we looked at. But I think we paid a reasonable price for a good neighborhood and I love living here!
