we bought over two years ago, but fixers were all we looked at. My DH would never be happy with anyone elses work & we knew we wanted to make it ours. I had no idea how much the house we actually bought would need (everything). However it is a much better house with a bigger yard & great view so it was worth it.
Also there are lots of unfinished projects, we are ok with that. We plan to be here forever so we'll get it all done.
I think our generation has a weird thing about instant gratification with home ownership. I remember having an empty living room with no carpet for a couple of years when my parents bought the house I grew up in. The house was a foreclosure & the grass was taller than me when we moved in, it took time to make it a home.

well...i think that when our generation is speding about a half a mil on the house

high expectations are just natural...

To spend an exorbant amount of money on a home that has to be GUTTED...

well it gets dicouraging..

it isn't the need for self gratification...but just a need for some sort of happiness

to each their own

we've talked about this before but home prices 35 years ago vs. salaries then & most families with ONE income was approximately the same ratio.

You know where I live & have often commented its not a place where you would live, however I did not pay 1/2 million because my DH & I are commited to a more simplified/organic lifestyle.
I spent all my young life running the rat race, those days are behind me.
That said, I TOTALLY agree with people shopping for homes being mortified at the condition of some at steep prices. If I were in the market again today, I'd do exactly what I did two years ago.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

I think that my parents were able to build a house for $50K on a yearly salary of $26K combined and if they didn't have living room furinture for 1 year- it wasn't the end of the world

b/c they had a brand new house

my what a difference 30 years makes

who can really say they can do that today!

i could careless what it was like 30 years ago or what the ratios were...

i am thinking about what i have to deal with now..

and i do not think that i need instant gratification..

i highly doubt ANYONE GETS THAT THESE DAYS

and to be quite honest..i am not going to spend my money on something i do not want..REGARDLESS

and that isn't a bad thing...

it is a damn smart thing

not sure what YOUR town or my likes and dislikes of it has to do with anything ...Chat Icon

nor do i understand what your chosen lifestyle does either..

it is a preference of both of ours on how we BUY our homes, WHERE we buy our homes and HOW we chose to live

AND if i want to wait for MY PERFECT HOUSE...well then KUDOS to me

i would hope everyone would do this for themselve

and along those lines, our parents didn't lease new cars every two years, or cell phones, or 45 pair of shoes, dinners out 5x a week, I don't think so, extravgant trips? maybe a road trip to niagra falls!sometimes the even had hand me down furniture Chat Icon
Lets face it, our generation brings much of this on ourselves.

well that much is true. our parents didn't have a lot of the expenses of today. and I know my parents struggled, but they struggled mostly b/c my mom was a stay at home mom.

i really do not think how my parents lived has anything to do with how i pick and chose what kind of house i want to live in for the rest of my life

and for someone to say that people of our generation need "instant gratification" just because we are looking to uy what we want...is just plain silly

eta...although i must say..My mom at my age
was better off than me right now..

she had her gazillion shoes, we had awesome trips and relatively new cars

but again...that was then and has no bearing on "instant gratification"

yes I know you said today, but I probably could have paid even less for my house TODAY since there are 15 instead of 5 for sale in my neighborhood now vs 2 years ago when they didn't stay on the market more than a few days.

yup, I live out east. My DH reworked his entire business to work in the hamptons. I have a 50 minute commute in my 6 year old car. These are our choices, they way we live. I mention them because lots of people say you can't get a house for less than X amount. The fact is anyone can, they CHOOSE not to. we all have choices.

And RED I'm making a VERY BROAD generalization about an entire generation, not anyone here.
Its a fact we are known for it.
Our parents had different priorities that generations before them thought were unreasonable I'm sure.

I really can't believe any kind of "healthy debate/conversation" turns into a complete pi$$ing match with tag teaming.

You've outwitted me again, I'm done.
good luck in your respective home searches. And I'll say it again for you.
There is a seat for every a$$, hopefully you'll find yours soon.

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

Kelly....you turned this into a pissy debate...

i am not ganging up on anyone and i can certainly have a debate on the topic

but i certainly should be able to say how i feel as you did yourself

YOU seem to never like that aspect of itChat Icon

ETA...i don't know why you cannot just realize that we are all different and want different things?

We are all doing what is best for OUR FAMILIES...and that is OBVIOUSLY going to be sooo different for all of us

WHY must you take things that i say and have said soooooooooo personally...that you have to bring it up time and time again

Re: Are you looking for a fixer upper?

please, the big vacation I went on this summer was camping for a weekend. FH drives his 2000 mustang even though its falling apart - we eat out ONCE a week - so anyone on here that tells me I "complain" about prices and should "save more" and not be so "picky" and stop wanting what I need to "earn" is going to hear it from me.

I know someone who paid $200K for home in 2000 - its now easily $400K. she could NEVER EVER EVER afford a $400K house today. She simply does not make enough $$.

and people say "worry about prices now, not what they were in the past". well I worry about what they were in the past because when people who couldnt afford their own homes only FIVE years later - thats an economical problem!!!

what I get a kick out of is the co-workers at DH's job who all bought their homes 15+ years ago telling him "well you both work, you can do it, other people do it!"

Chat Icon clueless!!!!!! and when DH asked them "could you afford your house if you had to buy it today"? they all say no Chat Icon
