Not sure about when you are allowed, but I know my DS pretty much made the decision on his own.

When he was about 3.5 months he started rolling onto his tummy in his sleep and there was no stopping him after that! I still don't put him down on his tummy, but he always ends up that way!

Once they roll over on there own. My son was 3 months and my DD's were 4 months old when they started to sleep that way. Once we layed them down they roll over.

My DD was later rolling onto her belly & staying there....now at 9 months she's been sleeping like that for the last month (on her own, I didn't place her like that).
