At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

My goddaughter has recently signed up...and I wanted to get your opinions.

I have not accepted her friend request and I am not sure I will, even though it will start something with her family...anywho...what do you think is the appropriate age to have a FB page?

Not true. My cousins and nephew have them. 10 and under. I do NOT agree with any of them having them. In my house ds will have to be at least 14-15. And even that I feel is tonyoung.

Re: At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

I feel that it really depends on the kid.

Some 13-year-olds could handle it; some 16-year-olds can't.

Some 35-year-olds can't. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Generally speaking though, if the child is trustworthy, does well in school, etc...then I would say about 13/14...but with parents being able to see everything that they post/the goings-on on their page and such.

Is it possible they lied about their ages so that FB would allow their accounts to be set up?

I'm really not sure if there is an age limit on that site imposed by FB but I would think they need to be around 14-15 before they should be allowed on.

I think you might want to consider being her friend just so you can monitor what she's doing online. You can EASILY block her from seeing anything on your page that you don't want her to see but at the very least it's a gateway to her life.

At least that's how I look at it when it comes to friending my younger cousins.

I would not let my children have one until they are at least 13 years old and even then, I will be monitoring it like crazy.

Techinically you do, but I have little cousins (under 10 Chat Icon) who have a FB page, but their birthday is not correct. They must have lied to open their account.

How old is she? why wouldnt you add her? I think it is better for family to be added when they are young to help monitor them. Its better than having a secret one. Thats just my opinion

Re: At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

I've been on the internet forEVER. I think I was 15. My parents weren't so computer literate, and the internet was relatively "new" in 1991. I could have gotten into a ton of trouble, luckily I was sort of smart at that age and came out of it mostly unscathed.

I will not let my teenager have an account unless I can monitor it. I don't know what age, it will depend on the kid.

Re: At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

children in my family have FB pages (ages 8, 10, 12). and keep in touch with family overseas, which is priceless to us.
and they play games, but nothing more than that.
they are monitored closely.

i child that will get into trouble will get into trouble regardless of whether they have a fb page.

Re: At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

i know a couple of 11 yr olds that have one and i think it is fine they are only friends with there friends and family and they are strickly monitored by their parents who are also there friend on the page so they see what goes on and they also have the password to there childs account and can go on whenever they want to check private messages and make sure everything is all good ..the kids really just use it to talk to there friends from school and out of state cousins and of course their pages are set to custom privacy settings . i dont see anything wrong with it IMO

I also thought that you had to be at least 13 years old but I do know that some of the children that I work with are under 13 and have FB pages...they request to be my friend but I don't accept the requests of course.

As for having a FB page, I would let my child have one when they're about 12-13 years old- maybe older depending on their maturity.

Personally, I think you should be a Freshman in HS

I won't friend my nieces until they are at that age. When my niece sends me a friend request, I send her back the Terms of Service LOL

It all depends...my niece has had one since 11 and its innocent.

My friends dd just asked her for one at 13...allher friends have one KWIM. They set up the account with their email so they see all comments and requests. They also told her if she engages in any kind of cyber bullying...its gone

I work in a MS and FB reaks HAVOC in kids lives Chat Icon

I tell the parents to cancel their kids account and let them sign up when they are legal....Chat Icon

Depends on the kid but many kids post things that can get them in a lot of trouble and it scares me. We just had a print out from a yr ago that is being brought to the police bc it is a threat. Nightmare FB for kids, nightmare!

Re: At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

I wouldn't let my kids have a fb account until they are about 15-16 and I would still closely monitor it. If they want to stay in touch with family and stuff, then I guess I could create a family fb account. So, I know EVERYTHING they are doing (when they are younger than 15_).

I think it really depends on the maturity level of the child.

I think I'm the minority here but I would say at least 16.

Because Facebook requires a child to be 13 yrs old,I will stick w/ that as a minimum. My niece was not allowed to because her mom did not want her to think it was ok to break the rules. I agree in this case.

Thanks everyone for your replies...I just don't know how I feel about it.
I don't feel like the maturity level is there - this person is only 11

Re: At what age is too young to have an Facebook page?

My DD is 10, some of her friends are on FB. My DD is not. I feel that they are too young and it is too easy to get caught up in bad stuff, including the whole internet bullying thing. I am not sure when I will let her have one, but I do not think it will be for years.

My dh's 8 year old cousin has one. I think its ridiculous. I feel that fb is for anyone 21 or older.
