i read a great article on babycenter about this and how you really shouldnt feel pressure to wean (esp if your kid doesnt use a pacifier)

14-15 months, we had been slowly integrating the sippy cup and then BAM!...one day she just stopped drinking bottle.
I said this on Ang-Rich's post, I wasn't ready. But that is how Bella does all major milestoness, there is no in between with her.

12 1/2 months. She would keep dumping them on the floor so I threw them out.

She was fine after a few days, however I now let her take a sippy with water to bed. She doesn't really drink it, just cuddles with it.

This is the article

My toddler refuses to give up the bottle. What can we do?
My toddler refuses to give up the bottle. He'll drink from a cup during the day, but cries inconsolably if he doesn't get his bottle at bedtime. Most of the time, my husband and I are so frustrated that we give in. What can we do?

This sounds like an unhappy situation for everyone, and I can't help wondering whether getting your toddler off the bottle is worth what it's costing. Many toddlers continue to nurse or have a bottle at bedtime well past their first birthday (and some continue well past their second), so there's nothing unusual about your son's attachment to his bottle. What's more, most toddlers who give up sucking milk still suck something. Children who use pacifiers, or suck their fingers or thumbs, often keep it up through early childhood and are often especially reliant on it at bedtime. One way or another, "comfort sucking" is a central part of peaceful bedtimes for most small children. When a child gives up this habit has nothing to do with how "advanced" or "behind" he is.

The two important no-no's of bedtime bottles are putting sweet drinks, such as juice, in them and letting your toddler take his bottle of milk into bed, where he'll sip it slowly. Either of these — let alone the combination — will be disastrous for his teeth as well as making him expect to have a bottle at hand whenever he half-wakes in the night. But a bottle of milk on your lap as a comforting snuggly end to the day, followed by cleaning his teeth, isn't necessarily something it's worth fighting over.

If you're really eager to wean your toddler from the bottle, just avoiding the worst may seem too gentle. But right now, all three of you are getting the worst of both worlds: You and your husband are angry and frustrated, and your toddler is miserable, though he's still getting his beloved bottle. It's better for everyone if you either refuse his requests and stick to your decision no matter how much he screams, or willingly give him the bottle and put off weaning until later.

Re: At what age was your DC completely off bottles?

Thomas has been down to one bottle a day since 12 months. He has his morning bottle and then sippys the rest of the day. He hasn't had a bedtime bottle (or sippy) since 12 months. He drinks about 8 ounces of milk in his morning bottle and then only an ounce or so from each sippy (with each meal). He does drink a lot of water or watered down juice if offered. I'm going to talk to ped at 15 month visit about taking away the first morning bottle. I'm hesitant because it's the only way he gets any real amount of milk.

Around 13 mos old. He stopped them himself and with that he stopped drinking milk. Chat Icon But he eats a lot of cheese, has cereal with milk, etc. so we and the ped are not worried.

I don't remember exactly, but I know he was totally off them by 14 months because we moved to a new house then and I never unpacked them.

DD #1 was off by 15 mos. DD#2 is almost 14 mos. and I haven't made any moves yet...she still drinks 3 bottles a day. Eh, I guess I'll start weaning her in the next month; I'm in no rush.

My DS never had a bottle, he was EBF and then was on sippy's by his first b-day.

My DD was bottle fed and she was also off the bottle and on all sippy's before her first birthday.

DS will be 2 the 27th of this month and I am NOT embarrassed to say he still takes 2 bottles a day. I have tried a few times to get rid of the bottle and he has no problem not having a bottle, but will not drink milk from a cup. Getting rid of the bottle is not the problem its getting him to drink milk from a cup. I have tried everything from strawberry milk to chocolate milk to 5 different types of cup nothing works. He will take a sip from the cup and make a face like I just made him eat liver and then thats it, he wont touch it again. At 1 yr his ped said he should be off bottles by 2. DS' 2 yr check up is the day after his b-day so I will see what doc has to say cause I am at a loss.

I will definately learn my lesson for the next time though.......He has been using a cup since he wa 6 mos old and it never dawned on me to put formula in it.

I'm with you. DC with be 2 on the 26th and still drink their milk from a bottles. They just refuse to drink milk from a cup. DD is such a poor eater, I don't want to take her milk away.

Re: At what age was your DC completely off bottles?

I asked my ped as I am not in a rush and she said she likes them off by 18 months, but no rush.

Based on that Im going to start weaning him at around 15-16 months..he only gets two a day .

12 months.

He never had a bottle before bed, so I didn't have to wean that. He just gets his sippy with dinner and that's it.
