The Hep B shot at birth. Don't they have to either get it at the hospital or within a few days after birth at the pediatrician's office? I never knew it was an option to not get it at all...
nope you have the option, you just sign a form at the hospital saying that you dont want your baby to recieve it, and then you and your pediatrician can figure out a schedule that works for you

Im with Liza. I teach children on all areas of the spectrum as well. Diagnoses have changed so much over the years and categorizations exist now that never existed before. My opinion is that if anything, there may be more of a genetic link than anything else, but I am not a diagnostician.
to add, aren't there also MORE people in the world thus creating MORE chances of autism? just like crime rates, the more people you have in an area, the more prevalent things seem. NYC has more murders than some tiny farm town in oklahoma b/c there are simply more people.
as a child of a healthcare professional, i will tell you that MANY things are simply genetic even if drs. and nurses won't come right out and say it. otherwise, why would they advise screening for breast cancer for siblings and children of breast cancer patients? (the same holds true of other diseases)

Re: Autism and vaccinations
I don't believe in the connection and I agree that it is mostly genetics and that more and more mental handicaps diseases are being grouped with the autism spectrum.
A friend of mine has an autistic son, and they underwent genetic testing and were told if they have another child girl or boy he/she will be autistic, worse if they have another boy. My MIL is a preschool/kindergarden teacher, she sees triplets all with autism, brothers and sisters with autism, one child has it one doesn't, some both kids have it.. She's seen very functioning autistic kids to ones who need a shadow in school. One parent her son was just diagnosed with autism and they found out at the same time his dad, who always had problems in school at 30 years old was just diagnosed.
I just had a long convo with my PED about this on Monday about the latest research and it opened my eyes even more than i had already researched. From what he told me, more kids that once were labeled mentally retarded are now being grouped into the autism spectrum cause there are lots of resources in school for autism but very very little for other mental handicaps. He actually told me the stats you see on tv are wrong that 1 in 160, they don't tell you the rest of the research behind it. He said if you look at the stats graph the diagnosis for autism shot way up whereas the diagnos for mental retardation went way down in the exact opposite direction.
With that said, my daughter has been given every vaccination on schedule from Hep b to MMR, which she just got on monday. Yes for the first couple visits she got 3-4 shots at one time, but I would rather get them over with than prolong the vaccinations for her and me.
For us the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Re: Autism and vaccinations
I think it is important to make sure that there is no mercury in the shots.

Re: Autism and vaccinations
i am far from an autism expert, but i do work with plenty of children as a psychiatrist and i get asked this question all the time. i totally agree that there is NO convincing evidence regarding the whole vaccine/autism theory. in my opinion the whole theory has been completely twisted and blown out of proportion by the media, and then perpetuated by terrified parents who are desperately trying to have some control over a disease that is so devastating and seems so random. it makes me sad because i feel like parents' vulnerabilities are being preyed on.
one thing to keep in mind is that the diseases that our children are getting vaccinated against are NOT benign. i think that fact has gone by the wayside because, really, when was the last time you heard of a kid with mumps? but inevitably, the more parents refuse or delay these vaccines, the more we are going to see these nasty little diseases start to creep into our schools and homes. i find that very scary... my child will have the vaccines as scheduled.
