Babies with milk protein allergy
DD has been very gassy, fussy and basically a nightmare to deal with. I told ped, who told me to put her on Alimentum. She really hasn't made any big changes, other than sleeping another hour or two at night, being alert more between feedings/naps. I don't know if that is to be attributed to her just getting older or the formula. So I tried to have our insurance cover Alimentum, which they denied until she saw a ped gastro, who she saw today. Dr tested her dirty diaper and said it was so slight, and probably doesn't have an allergy at all. Yet he put her on Elecare to try for a week, which is almost twice the price of Alimentum it seems. I tried to give it to DD, and she spit out the new formula, wouldn't even take it a tiny bit. So I gave her Alimentum again at her last feeding, which she took.
If she doesn't have an allergy why am I giving her such specialized formula. I feel like just giving her Similac sensitive or something like that and giving her the gas drops or the gastro said to try to get her to poop more, that might help the gas.
I have a call out to the gastro, but I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. I really don't know what to do at this point, I'm at my wits end.

Re: Babies with milk protein allergy
If you do a search under my name you can see my DS history. In summary, he went through several formulas and then around 3 months was diagnosed with a milk allergy after having a sigmoidoscopy..which is not always necessary. I switched to alimentum..and it took a good 2 months for things to get better. He went from watery 4+ dirty diapers a day to mucusy....the GI wanted me to swich to elecare or neocate but my ped. recc. sticking it out so his body would get used to it. It did get better after a while and once I started solids the mucus went away. So I stayed with the Alimentum.
Maybe talk to your doc. about staying on ALimentum and give it a chance...or even Nutramagin. I would avoid Soy which is in some sensitive formulas..if your child has a milk allergy, they could be sensitive to soy too.
Good luck.

Babies with milk protein allergy
I have been to a Gastro as well who recommended Neocate (just like Elecare and just as expensive) I put DD on Alimentum and shes had a lot of improvement with her digestion.
I say sometimes you have to go with your instinct on things. Drs do not know everything and you are with your LO all day everyday. Sometimes you know whats right...
And it doesnt have to be a milk allergy but rather a milk intolerance. The gastro I saw said they can test the poop all they want its not accurate.

Re: Babies with milk protein allergy
DD is diagnosed with a milk protein allergy. She has been a very fussy eater from the beginning, and was first diagnosed with silent reflux, for which she takes prevacid. She was on Nutramigen for a month, and still tested positive for blood in her stool. The GI had her start on Neocate, and after 2 weeks, her stool tested negative, and it did again after 3 weeks. However, she is still totally fussy and doesn't eat enough, so who knows?!

Re: Babies with milk protein allergy
A lot of babies have reflux that goes hand in hand with a milk protein allergy... If they are still having symptoms, you may want to look at that... DS had a severe MPA and soy allergy. We got him on Elecare and he was still having issues with feedings.. He had reflux. Put him on meds and what a difference after a week or so..
