Back from vacation sadness
So we just came back from Disney.
While I'm happy to be home because we were "Disney-ed" out, I feel an overwhelming sense of sadness.
I don't think I could ever live in many places of the south due to the pace and some of the people, but just being back "here" makes me sad...seeing how old and rundown things are, how expensive it is to just live, traffic....people's selfishness....
Has anyone else felt this way after getting back to Long Island?
I plan to go take a nap in a bit and hope that helps!

I'm not originally from LI but yes, I always feel what you're saying when we return from a trip. I love the area we live in but not LI in general.

I am from LI (well, Queens), but other than that I could have written this. I like our town and if we have to stay here I won't be devastated, but LI as a whole isn't that great of a place to live. This is my opinion only of course...

Yes! I get this all the time and Disney withdrawals are the worst. It's proven that the planning of a big trip is part the fun and build-up and not having the planning or something amazing to look forward to is a let down for sure

Re: Back from vacation sadness
We booked another trip for this time next year and I just logged onto My Disney Experience page and it lifted my spirits a bit to see we have only 365 days left to go.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
OMG yes but ESPECIALLY when we got back from Florida in late April- and we left and it was 83 degrees and landed in Islip 3 hours later and it was 43 degrees. And windy. And overcast. And the people coming to the airport to leave on flights were in winter coats and UGGS.
UGSS! In late April, almost May.
And we were coming back from paradise. To the ugly, cold, dreary shithole that is Long Island
I wanted to vomit. And move.
I hate NY

Yes. When I moved from li to FL, and came back to li to visit, I was so sad. Everything is so drab, brown and old. I couldn't wait to get back to FL. It was an instant mood lifter... The weather, how clean and new everything is here. I could never move back there.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
when i came home from visiting my sister, i was depressed! she lives in the most gorgeous area of florida and i came home to 46 degrees. i was so sad.
but honestly, once i got back into my routine, i was totally fine.
unlike a lot of others, i love long island.
with exception of rough/long winters, i love the seasons and i love my home and my family.

It defintiely affects your mood. I know a girl who moved to Florida and was able to stop taking her anti depressants. Moved back to NY a few years later and had to go back on them and her anxiety returned in full force. And yet, we pay some of the highest taxes in the country to live here. What am I missing?

Back from vacation sadness
Coming back from vacation is depressing no matter where you live. Coming back to LI from anywhere is a very special type of hell.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
I think coming home from any vacation sucks.
When we were in Arizona this past June, we stayed at some insane resort called the Phoenician (my uncle works there and got us the employee rate)..
My son cried every nite for a week when we returned home. AZ is so beautiful (even though it was hotter than hell..lol).
totally know the feeling of coming home and being depressed about getting back to the grind.

Yes. Coming back from CA and Florida is very hard for me. Getting off the plane and walking through JFK is just so depressing. The truth is I would like to live in another city for a couple of years, but DH is not prepared to. I know there is a better place for us, this isn't it for us. Depressing. Winter is so awful I wish summer would never end

Re: Back from vacation sadness
Think of how blessed you are to be able to travel. I actually get Homesick every single time I travel which is very very often lately. The 1st day when I check in a hotel I get into a funk. Maybe I'm just tired??? That could be the case for you, too! If you feel better after a nap then your problem is solved. Haha.

Back from vacation sadness
I've thought about this a lot. And what I think sucks so much is that Long Island is a longgg island. I was recently in NH too on vacay and other places you can be in a more metro area but then drive in a 360 degree circle around that metro and decide how rural you want to get.
You can also sacrifice a longer commute for a bigger house outside of the metro. In Long Island draw a 360 around any town and you're in the water. It's mostly eat or west. There is no rural anymore and there really isn't anywhere to go on LI for the better quality of life.
I've felt it's a shit hole for a long time. Take a look at the towns and store fronts with fresh eyes and it's super depressing.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
Nothing to do with living here, but I always get sad after a vacation. There is always so much excitement and anticipation that when it's over there is almost nothing like it to look forward to anymore.

Back from vacation sadness
I live north of exit 69 on the LIE and it's pretty rural here. Most of the stores are newer, not as aestheticly pleasing as places outside NY but better than the mish mosh of crappy strip malls in some towns. People here are nicer than some parts of LI, not as many do the city commute which I think really takes a toll on people. It is so beautiful on this part of LI between the beaches and the farms we rarely vacation off LI in summer or fall. I will admit the winters are really getting torturous and I also hate flying back to ugly, brown winter LI from someplace lush in the winter.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
Thanks everyone.
Had a good night's sleep and I feel a lot better today.
Great to hear that people who live elsewhere still feel the same.
I'm actually looking forward to getting back to work and into a routine tomorrow.
And yes. I do feel blessed that we were able to make this trip. We haven't vacationed in awhile for budgetary reasons.
Also helped me reflect on how good it is to get away, and make it a point to save for this.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
This is exactly how we started feeling every time we returned home from a vacation! We felt sad, and that LI was dreary and unattractive. Add to that the times we returned in cold and rainy weather and it was hard to love home. That's how we decided to move! We knew after our last trip in March 2013 that it was time. DH worked/s for an investment bank on Wall St with offices in FL and started asking about jobs in FL. Someone got wind of it an offered him a fabulous opportunity in FL and here we are. We love it!! Much happier!

Re: Back from vacation sadness
I have family in Fla and have been back and forth for years. Not sure I could live there. But yes, everything you said. Coming home, it isn't as clean and everything is old, like you said. Even simply going to supermarkets down in Fla and coming home to go to one here, ugh, they are filthy and smaller.

Re: Back from vacation sadness
ALL the time. After I visit anywhere I almost hate coming back to the island. Things are just so crowded and crazy here. After visiting other places where life is a little more slow paced and where the landscape is prettier and more interesting than this boring, flat island I always wish there was a way for me to move away. I don't love it here, I can't really see being here the rest of my life. There are so many nicer, better places to live. I know some LI'ers find that hard to believe but it's true.
