I agree with her...welfare is the government assisting you in buying NECESSITIES to feed your family and survive. It is foolish to allow her to buy an unnecessary $20 pie when that $20 can buy 5 boxes of breakfast cereal for her family. And when you're in that situation, breakfast for a month should trump dessert. No question.
Yes, maybe it was her kid's birthday but we didn't have a ton of money growing up and often my birthday cake was a $2 Entenmann's cake. I never knew the difference!!

Side note, I never had a pie from briemerre. Are they really to die for?
They are very good. Are they worth the price? Not IMO. I didn't have an orgasm or anything when I tasted it. And the way some people played them up I thought for sure I would.
Have you tried the blueberry cream pie???
Cause that's orgasm inducing.
Yes. That one is awesome. BUt I haven't had it in a while. The regular blueberry was good- but not insane or anything.

this. a pastry is NOT a neccessity, it is a luxury. I work very hard and make a good living and still see it as a luxury, almost never buying cakes/pies etc. If i were struggling and using EBT, i would be using it to stock up on things we cannot live without and if i had $5 one week, reward myself with a "luxury".

furthermore, good for her for standing up for HER BELIEFS! she has a right to! she is more than happy to take her business and move along, not fighting to do business there without taking EBT.

I'm pretty sure with food stamps there is no restrictions on what type of foods you can purchase. So it's really none of her damn business if they want to uy a pie from her or not.
i do not believe this is true at all. there are certain brands that are acceptable with food stamps and others that are not. also certain products that are acceptable, others not.

WIC is totally different from FS. Its for pregnant women to children 5yo and you can only buy limited items-peanut butter, milk, cheese and a few other things. FS, like I explained in my previous post, is much less restrictive.

That is WIC that has a list of approved items. Food stamps are different, and they can purchase almost anything at a supermarket. It's like a debit card.
Households CANNOT use SNAP benefits to buy: Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco; Any nonfood items, such as: pet foods; soaps, paper products; and household supplies. Vitamins and medicines. Food that will be eaten in the store. Hot foods.

I get her point. We're talking about pie. Just because something is sold at a farmer's market doesn't make it some sort of nutritional staple. Pie is not a civil right. If you can't afford to pay for it yourself, maybe you shouldn't be shopping for pie. There was a time in my life when I couldn't afford to indulge in Starbucks whenever I wanted to. So I didn't. I didn't ask the taxpayers to buy it for me.
And if it was for a kid's birthday cake, I am sure the person in question would have no trouble buying a cake or pie at the supermarket with their EBT card.
I agree. I have no problem using EBT for fresh fruits and veggies, but I can see that it's a slippery slope. I don't think it should be all or nothing, though. And clearly, we can't just hope that the people using EBT are smart enough to know not to purchase those kinds of items on the taxpayers dimes.

Buying a pie doesn't mean they're abusing the system. Maybe they're scrimping extra hard on other meals to enjoy a special treat. EVERYONE wants to give their kids a treat once in awhile whether they can afford it or not.

Right, but if u want to treat your kids, you can go get a box of cake mix and frosting for like $4 at the supermarket.
If I'm broke, I buy the bare basics. I don't expect others to pay for me to have pie from a farm stand.

The supermarket is filled with reasonably-priced options for special treats. I did not even grow up poor-- my parents were solidly middle-class-- and our "treats" were things like an Entenmann's cake or a cake my mom made from a mix. That's called being responsible with money.

Re: Baker refuses to take EBT cards...
It is food, and it is a food stamp. it isn't a smart choice, but it is their choice to make.
people are constantly trying to sell dh their ebt card. 1/2 off. that is abuse.

Baker refuses to take EBT cards...
What's the difference if she went to the supermarket and bought the ingredients to make a pie vs going to a farmers market to buy one already pre made?
6 of one half dozen of the other IMO.
I get her point, but c'mon. It's just a pie.

I get it, and I do understand her position. I just don't think a pie (which contains fresh fruit) is such an egregious misuse of EBT funds.

This is true. I used to work in a supermarket as a teen. Not sure if the rules have changed but even cereals could not be sugary kinds, etc.

I agree. A fresh homemade pie is a hell of a lot healthier then something store bought with preservatives. This person is trying to make some sort a political statement that is incredibly misguided. She looks like an ass.

i dont care about the nutritional value. I see it as a misuse when you can buy a cake or pie in store for like 75% less! Use that extra money for milk and cereal for your kids!
it's like someone who is on a budget buying an LV purse when a walmart brand will do! why spend the extra money when you dont have it to spend. its a luxury that you dont need!
