That there be a separate section for "Families with kids" and those "Without Kids".
It's like this woman just loves to p*ss off moms. Clearly she has never been on LIF.
Whoppi Goldberg said maybe there should be family friendly airlines for those with kids to travel on.
im not clear on what you (or Barbara) are actually referring to - you mean sep sections on planes? or just in general in public places?
Personally i don't really see anything wrong with the idea - it should make things easier for both parties involved. The families would be surrounded by similar people who would hopefully be more sympathetic, and the people without kids don't have to be around them if they don't want to. not sure what the drama is ...

Well, so long as the kids are unnecessarily drugged up on Benadryl, I'm ok with them flying in the same section as me.
Or they could do like that cell phone commercial and check the kids in a dog crate.

Wooops - I didn't put the words "on a plane". I'm surprised everyone got that that was what I was referring to, without saying it.
But yes, she meant on airplanes.
She was going on about how she DESPISES being on a plane and having toddlers kicking her chair, screaming, crying, and being around her in general....and she wishes they had a separate section for families.

As long as they also have a section for loud adult drunks then I'm all for it.
What happens if you are a loud adult drunk because you are trying to drown out the kids that are with you?

Doesnt she fly first class? How many times is she encountering a kid kicking her chair?

I vote the CFers get first class in the meantime.
Actually I do thnk that first class should be no children allowed.
I'm taking the bait
I disagree-people should make reasonable efforts to control their kids no matter where they sit and as long as they do, I don't think first class should be off limits to families with kids.
Paying for first class buys you more room, better food options and better boarding. But, it doesn't buy isolation from the world -if people want that then they should fly privately.
ETS: I'm not opposed to a kid section, but what would happen when seats run out in that section? Can families with kids not get seats while other seats go unused?
Actually First Class does buy you isolation. It isolates you from the Coach section...
Also no one is saying reasonable efforts shouldn't be made to control children. However using all reasonable efforts & even unreasonable efforts still does not guarantee a well-behaved or quiet child.
Eh-I still disagree and fully intend to subject other first class passengers to my kids some day.

oh ok, got it
i do see where she's coming from though, especially for someone who travels a lot, it must be difficult to have kids running around and kicking chairs etc. I know when im on the train, i think the same thing!

it really makes me sad that some people treat children as second class citizens these are the future leaders of our country and I think people should show a little more tolerance

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
I fly first and business all the time for work. Well-behaved, quiet people don't bother me, whether they are a year old or 90 years old. I'm often on those flights with children (especially international flights), and I RARELY have any children on the plane who are misbehaving or too loud.
Flight attendants will more often than not say something to parents in those cabins if their children are out of control or too loud, and they will also say something to adults who are too loud or out of control. I've witnessed both happen more than once.

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
Despite the fact that I want none of my own, I actually really DO like kids. They don't bother me unless they are extremely loud or misbehaving. Of all the flights I've been on, I can maybe think of one child who was misbehaving badly enough to bother me.
What I do see often (and I am surrounded by kids a lot, especially through riding) are parents who don't teach their children to behave or parents who think their children should be allowed to scream and run around ANYWHERE just because they are children. A scene at my barn recently comes to mind where a group of unsupervised children were running around screaming at the top of their lungs and spooking all the horses. Dangerous for the kids, riders, and horses, and completely unacceptable in my book. By absolutely NO means are these the MAJORITY of kids / parents, though. It's just a somewhat frequent phenomenon that CAN turn adults off to children in some places. Most of the time, though, the kids I see are well behaved, polite, and respectful. Unfortunately, sometimes a few bad experiences can sour people, which is sad!
As long as parents expect their children to behave (and correct them accordingly when they don't), I don't think MOST people have a problem with children being anywhere. There is always going to be some crotchety old ******* who gets annoyed by kids, but that same person is usually annoyed by EVERYONE anyway. I think most people have no problem with well behaved children -- and I by no means am talking about perfect children who never make noise and sit still for hours. That's silly - they are children after all. Kids will be kids -- but they also need to know how to behave in certain situations. As long as that is expected and reinforced, I don't think most people have a problem with kids.
ETA -- And to be clear, I don't think children should be banned from first class. So I look forward to being subjected to your well-behaved children in first class, Cranky Pants.
I think people here like to complain about the thought of children in certain places, but the reality is that few of us would actually be bothered by kids being around us in most places. (At least I HOPE that's the reality!)

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
But is it really that often that kids are in first class? I cant imagine the majority of parents are paying first class for thier kids as well as themselves. KWIM?:
Then slim down those odds even more to the fact that the child will be unruly.
I think Barbara was over exaggerating a bit

On international flights, I almost always have at least one child in the Business or First Class cabin, usually more. It's less frequent on the shorter flights, but far fewer people fly business / first on short, domestic flights anyway.
Again, I will stress that 99.9% of the time, the children are totally fine and well-behaved. They really don't bother me at all. I think they are adorable.

I do travel a lot for work as well and agree with Kara that 99.9% of the time, the kids are perfectly fine. I think we're used to more unruly kids in restaurants and other places we frequent a lot more than airplanes.

Didnt even think about international flights. I used to fly domestic all the time and hardly ever saw children in first class. I still think Barbara Walter is full of crap.
Kara, I do agree with everything you posted in the previous post. i can also attest to the fact that I aside from a baby crying because of their ears hurting , I never encountered a kid so bad that they disrupted the flight and ruined my experience.

I know... and I always feel so bad for the parents with the crying baby. It's not as if they are enjoying the fact that their little one is screaming / in pain.
I've had screaming babies on a few flights -- but I try not to count that. The little ones can't help it and it's not like the parents aren't doing everything they can to help the little one. I can't say it doesn't bother me to hear a screaming baby for an entire flight (I'm human after all), but I'd never fault the parents or be angry about it.

I wouldn't mind a section for people with kids. I haven't flown yet with DS just because I am nervous he will disturb other passengers.
However, if they have that section can they please get a section called "I cannot fit into my seat". Happens to me every time I freaking fly. Flame away.

I know! Makes me very sad
I fly international at least once a year (it's over 12 hr flight with at least one layover/changing planes) and flew with DD when she was was 12 mos old , believe me most of the time (in MY experience) my kid and other kids are /were better behaved and quiet than some adults.

my well behaved child-yes!
I think that's hitting the proverbial nail on the head. Well behaved children should be welcomed anywhere (barring bars, nudie shows, and other age inappropriate places).
It's up to parents to decide whether or not the kid SHOULD be there and to ensure their child behaves.
To me, it doesn't matter if we are flying coach or first class, I'll still keep my kid in check. Neither class is more entitled to fly peacefully nor is either more deserving of being subjected to a misbehaving child/irresponsible parent.

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
I don't see anything wrong with her remark. It won't happen, too hard to apportion seats appropriately, but as a parent, I wouldn't have a problem with it. This is why I love flying to my parents (we go to Orlando) most of the plane is parents and kids.
And I agree with Kara, I have problems with kids who are misbehaving and their parents ignore it, basically do nothing. The kids who are reasonably well behaved for their age are fine. Some say the cutest things--I remember one little boy asking if he was going to see God when we got above the clouds. One kid kept kicking the back of my seat on one trip--I said something to his father, who ignored me. Then I said something to the boy later, and he stopped! The Dad didn't like it, but too bad, all I said was "would you please stop kicking my chair? I'm not liking it."

I don't see why this is such a bad idea. Especially if certain planes could be outfitted to accommodate families with kids. Extra bassinet room and a small place for kids to get up and move around without disturbing others.
I certainly agree with your point but I do not see the airlines ever providing more room for smaller people. If anything, they would find a way to cram in more seats in a kid section.

I don't have children (yet) but I don't mind being near them on a plane.
I think there is a valid point with animals bc if you have bad allergies then sitting next to a dog or a cat can be really brutal...
But kids? that seems silly to me.
