(or... the person who was supposed to sit next to her saw you sitting there and took your seat and didn't say anything because they were happy to give up the seat next to the baby?)
hahaha never thought of that .. you might be right!

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
my baby was a nut on flights.
there was no controlling his crazy a$$.
I was practically topless the whole time, trying to nurse this nut to sleep. Screaming, kicking, hitting...I would gladly take a child section on a plane.

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
Ok as a non-parent but frequent flyer I will say that a child friendly section does not make it less quiet or crazy.
I love children, and 99.9 percent of the time they do not bother me. A crying baby or toddler is not the issue it the child who is NOT being watched by their parent(s). The kid who kicks my chair and their parent tells them to stop doesn't bother me -- its it the kids who are not being watched and it does happen. Some parents think great we are in a confined space the kid can't go anywhere and fall asleep or watch a movie and just don't pay attention. That is what drives me INSANE.
In first and business class I find you don't even notice if there is a child sitting there. If they are flying first/business it is usually because they are frequent flyers too and are used to being on a plane.
Loud drunk adults drive me the most crazy.
But you also have to know what to expect -- flight to Miami or Vegas = loud drunks. Flight to Orlando = kids.
Airports can't even get the security lines right with Family Friendly/Business lines they will never get seperate seating or specific airlines.

I completely agree. The seat kicking kills me, especially after I say something and it continues and the parents do nothing...

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
I would be all for planes that are "family friendly". I have had two horrible experiences on planes with my kids and those were for trips down to Florida. We even had the grandparents with us on the last one and my one son threw his worst temper tantrum ever the last 1/2 hour of the plane ride. I was going to die. People were starring at us...I really felt bad and there was nothing we could do to calm him down...he finally had to pass out to stop it. So at least if there was "family friendly" airlines, I would not feel as bad if it had happened.
With that being said, I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with people on planes. I had people offer to watch one kid while I took the other to the bathroom, hold toys/books/bottles for me, not get upset when some baby food wound up on their leg among other things.
Also, recently I came back from the Bahamas and a poor mother had a baby that literally screamed for at least half the plane ride. Did not bother me one bit and when we met up with her in the baggage pick up area you could see she was frazzled, so we all went up to her and told her that she was doing a great job during a tough time. It was like the stress just came off her face when she heard that. Again, I have been through it, so people who have not might not be as understanding.

my well behaved child-yes!
I think that's hitting the proverbial nail on the head. Well behaved children should be welcomed anywhere (barring bars, nudie shows, and other age inappropriate places).
It's up to parents to decide whether or not the kid SHOULD be there and to ensure their child behaves.
To me, it doesn't matter if we are flying coach or first class, I'll still keep my kid in check. Neither class is more entitled to fly peacefully nor is either more deserving of being subjected to a misbehaving child/irresponsible parent.
But in the case Beth described with a toddler who's ear drums are bursting it would be hard for a parent to keep them in check (I would imagine, not a parent yet)...
I for one do not mind kids on a plane and as others pointed out have always found adults MUCH more annoying and hard to take which is why I work with kids
That's not a case of a kid acting up-that's a case of the kid being sick and there is nothing that a parent can do about that really and IMO is not a reason to bar kids from first class.
As I said before, first class buys you a bigger seat an a few extra comforts but it can't (and shouldn't, IMO) shield you from life-kids with ear infections are part of life. Paying for first class reduces the chance that you'll sit near a screaming baby since many parents traveling with small children skip first class, but it's no guarantee.

The problem is that SOME people feel like they SHOULD be shielded from life.
My father is 67 years old and we were on a 9 hour flight home from Italy. His chair was reclined ( AS HE IS ALLOWED TO DO ) and he was trying to rest. The man behind him said that he couldnt recline that far because he was tall and needed the room so my dad moved his chair back up.
Turns out, the seat was BROKEN so it kept reclining anyway. I calmly got up and explained it to the man and he said "I dont care that it is broken, he has to keep it straight, we all have to make sacrifices" I could have SPIT ON HIM!!!! Luckily, the stranger next to him was horrified as well and offered to switch seats with him. My dad struggled the whole flight to keep his chair as straight as possible since he knew it was broken but the guy kept begging my dad to relax.
Oh, that story makes me SO ANGRY! I know tickets are expensive but seriously, get a life - its only a few hours of your life - GET OVER IT. Grrrrrrr.

ITA - I don't mind the kids so much - I don't like the people who treat the plane like they are the only ones on it

WHen I went to Aruba there were parents there with 2 kids who looked like they were under the age of 5, and while the parents were out cold sleeping, the kids were climbing all over the empty chairs (it was a 3 row plane) and fell a few times. The parents continued to sleep! The flight attendant had to come wake up the parents 3 times and they just went right back to sleep. THe last time she came over to them she was very stern with them and they finally got up. The kids were not being bad, but what do you expect a 2 and 4 year old to do? They were having a great time!

Ditto. I have seen it from both sides.
I have had a child kicking my seat on a plane. I turned around, nicely asked the child to stop the mom apologized and the girl did stop. In addition, her mom said, "see, sweetie, it's like when I ask you to stop doing that in the car to mommy's seat. It bothers people." The girl didn't do it again.
I also took a red eye on Jet Blue from CA. The parents were out cold while their 2 kids were shrieking the entire time with headphones on while watching the TVs on the back of the seat. I think most of us wanted to kill the parents on that flight. They were directly across the aisle from us, but the guy in front of us really looked like he would kill them when he got off the plane. The flight attendants did nothing.
I used to travel cross country several times a year. The crying babies never bothered me and usually, the mom is doing whatever she can to soothe the baby. It's the kids who are older who should know better who make me nuts.

I recently flew on a flight that was about 1/2 full and the flight attendant re-arranged the seating so all of families with small kids were seated in the back! I didn't mind at all

my DS is so loud and over the top at 18 months old, if there were a children section we would fly him to beaches in Turks! I would love it!! I'm too embarrassed by his behavior to take him on a plane right now

There IS a separate section....it's called FIRST CLASS. Pony up if you don't like it....do we forget there are ADULTS that can't STFU on planes too?????? I had one behind me for 3 hours coming home from Miami. I would have given my left ovary (not the right ) for it to be a kid, at least they don't know better.....
Wait does first class not allow children under a certain age?
I never realized that! Not sure, but I've never seen kids in first class and I'm sure they are hushed faster than in coach...
Probably parents dont want to spen all the $$ on the first class ticket and I bet you cant buy one and have a baby w/you...they prob make you buy two KWIM?
there is nothing limiting taking an infant infant in first class on most airlines - i traveled with my 4 month in first class in january - no problems

My son is almost 22 months old and he has flown in first class 4 times. He was better behaved than the "business man" a$$hole who sat behind us. He was escorted off the plane by the Air Marshall for his unruly behavior.

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
I am not against the idea if for the only purpose to accomodate families and children (more seat room, changing tables, etc..). Not because it annoys someone to be around kids.
Otherwise, get a private jet.
But then again, I would love to see a section for abnoxious adults (drunks, those who love to speak loudly about how sucessful they are, how "funny" they are, cell phone users, etc...).

Im going to get blasted, I actually wrote a letter to Jetblue, suggesting that parents put dirty diapers in a ziploc bag, So I dont have to pay 400 to go to florida and smell crap then entire time...
I was twisted I was on a flight from hell with screaming kids and an old people travel group.. NOT FUN..
how about a 3 or 4 year old having to go to the bathroom and the mother taking the air-sick bag and having him go in there rather then get up
pee shot up everywhere- it landed on her and almost on me
Delta- FL - thanksgiving weekend..not fun
ru f kidding me??
Don't know how i missed this thread!
I've had the opposite experiences flying as Kara; i've had the most horrific screaming, kicking children near/next to me on so so so many flights. I often fly and always survey the gate for how many kids are milling around, just so I know how many Tylenol to pop prophylactically.
Kid section gets my vote!

I'd tolerate that for about 1 minute and have that flight attendant either move me or put that $hit in a biohazard bag.

Re: Barbara Walters just suggested on the View...
am I the only person who can't hear anything more than 1 row in front and one row behind me on a plane? between the engines an the air...I can't even hear my DH sometimes
Sometimes I can hear kids and babies cry, but it's a distant noise usually.
My DS just said to me today that he could put his feet on the seat in front of him (in the car) b/c no one was in the seat in front of him. I guess the 100 times of explaining to him on the plane this week finally got through to him!

Except I have a lower tolerance for a rude adult who knows better than a child "forced" to be in an airplane and being asked to behave when they don't even understand what that means.
I don't have tolerance for parents not doing anything about their running kids in the aisles, kicking someone seat. But sometimes you just can't stop a kid from crying. That's just it!

I don't mean the crying at all! This time last year I was on a 16 hour flight to Hong Kong. The poor man behind me was walking his infant son up and down the aisle for about 10 hours of the flight. He was doing his best and I even offered to take over for him if he would like to sit for an hour or so. I don't fault him. He was trying so hard to keep the child quiet and it worked.
Now this other couple with two little girls who were running up and down the aisle some where around hour 12 were not doing anything! I was sitting in the exit row and it took one of the girls tripping over my feet for the parents to finally do something. I understand it's a long flight and people get ansty, but you can't allow that type of behavior to happen.
