Basement smell

We moved into a new house about 3 months ago and the basement has a bad basement smell that I cannot get rid of. We run a dehumidifier constantly. We replaced the carpet and repainted the finished side. It still smells. Nothing unusual came up during our home inspection, but I am starting to get concerned. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas? A product I can use? A company I can call to have it investigated further? TIA

Re: Basement smell

You said you painted the finished side- what about the unfinished side? Maybe that's where the smell is coming from?

In our basement I painted the walls and floors with a sealant- like a waterproofing type paint. I forget the name. Maybe you can try that on the other side ?

Re: Basement smell

TBH, this is one of the reasons I would never buy a home with a basement anymore.

Made that mistake....especially being close to the water...as a result we get water in on occasion, and were also affected by Sandy.

DH has put a ton of work in down there but I feel like the smell never goes away.

I also don't think it's as apparent to outsiders but DH and I really notice it.

Thanks. I have been researching like crazy and decided that would be my next step and hope for the best. Thanks so much!

But if the walls actually get moist or damp, won't the sealant eventually peel off?
