Bathroom in the basement - TOH
Does anyone know whether you can legally have a bathroom in the basement in the Town of Hempstead?
And what do you need (besides and inspection/sign off) to make it legal -- egress window?
Can you have a shower too, or only a toilet?

Egress windows are only for bedrooms. Most 1st and 2nd story bathrooms don't have egress windows.
(Don't know about the other questions, though...)

Bathroom in the basement - TOH
Is the rest of the basement finished? We recently had ours finished and had to add an egress window eventhough we didn't add a bedroom. If we had added one, we would have needed another egress window inside the bedroom. We do have a shower in the bathroom that we added and had to indicate no of plumbing units (sink, toilet, shower) in the permit and that's what they checked when they came to inspect.
I just realized you said TOH and we are Town of Oyster Bay! So it may vary. Call and ask your town permit office anonymously. I did that before we filed our permits.

My BIL in TOH had an illegal bathroom in his basement before he bought, the owners had to file to get a CO for it... I don't believe it has a window...

It is my understanding that if you do any work to a basement (finished space) now (I'm in TOH), you have to install an egress window. Bathroom or not. The window doesn't need to be in the bathroom, that I know for sure. We don't have a bathroom or bedrooms down there but are required to have an egress window put in.

We have a bathroom with a shower in our basement. It is a legal bathroom, it's on all TOH/Nassau records. Does not have a window. Can't help with the other questions since it was here when we bought the house.

Full bathroom with tub. We have an egress. Approved by Hempstead.

This. If you are having a finished basement space for dwelling the egress is for safety. Doesn't matter if there is a bathroom or bedroom.

Thanks everyone! DH has been trying to get in touch with the TOH building department for weeks - they are so busy he can never get anyone on the phone who knows what they are talking about.
