being told wrong gender

I didn't think this happened very often especially with today's technology, but I just found out my cousin, who's shower is next week, was just told by the doc that they made a mistake and instead of a boy, she's actually having a girl! I could only imagine how I would feel at almost 36 weeks pregnant (and having registered for all boy stuff) that it was the other gender! Makes me nervous since I plan on finding out!

Re: being told wrong gender

I get nervous too and always ask them to recheck at every appointment lol. I have the entire nursery set up already, all the clothes washed and folded and put away, etc. I like finding out because this is DS#2 so I like knowing if I need to spend a ton to get all new stuff or if I can pull my things out of the attic and set up. All that took a lot of time and couldn't imagine waiting until the baby was born and then taking out bins from the attic, separating sizes, washing, folding, putting away, etc etc. I just hope that they were all right at my appointments and I don't give birth and they tell me the other gender lol.

Re: being told wrong gender

This is my biggest fear! Funny you brought it up bc I had a dream last night about the baby (and I never have them)... Was at an appt where the doc would tell me about all the features and colors, except there was one issue... It was a boy, not a girl!! Beautiful blue eyes, light brown hair, but dh's bushy eyebrows Chat Icon

What freaks me out even more about the whole gender thing is when I was in st thomas on our babymoon... There was a "voodoo man" ealking down the street and he takes one look at my belly and says "its a boy!" And I said
nope, we already know its a girl" And he tells me "nope, it's a boy"...

So now this is all really getting to me Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon What a PITA that would be to change everything... Inlcuding paint color/decor etc

Wow! I've heard it before but only being told you're having a girl and then deliver a boy, but I hadn't heard of it the other way around! I feel for your cousin!

OMG I would be pissed!!! This is one of my fears! Not that I'd mind a boy, but we've prepared for a girl and I have done sooo much shopping!!!!

Re: being told wrong gender

I am so used to thinking of my LO as a boy, and calling him by his name that I cannot imagine having a girl.

Although, as long as baby is healthy and happy, the rest is all gravy,

I seriously doubt this will happen to us though. We were told at anatomy sonogram that she saw right away that it was a boy and then it was confirmed again at one particular sonogram at 24 weeks where he was not shy at all and ALL he showed us was the goods! and they were definitely there for sure!! Re: being told wrong gender

I feared this as well. We were told girl at 16 weeks and I couldn't WAIT until the 20 week sono to confirm. The tech confirmed 3x that it was a girl during that sonogram, but I am still nervous. She gave us two between the leg shots and I've been comparing them to online images of girl vs. boy but I still get nervous that she might just grow a penis Chat Icon

Re: being told wrong gender

yup, it still happens! Someone we know had a baby this past december and was told girl until much later when they had already had a gender reveal on TV, bought girl stuff etc and turned out to be a boy.

They were happy though since they both wanted a boy really badly.

Makes me nervous though but the last time I saw my bean was 29 weeks and she still was a girl Chat Icon

This is my fear! We were team green with DS so it didn't matter, but this time we found out and I've already shopped for girl stuff! I would hate to have a house full of pink stuff and have given away all my boy stuff only to find out it is in fact another boy!

I've had 3 sonos (20 weeks, 25 weeks, 27 weeks) all confirm girl, so I'm hoping there isn't actually a penis there somewhere hiding!

Re: being told wrong gender

I really can not believe those stories, i want the dr name and phone number. and i would like to verify that the tech was : a inexperienced or b. using technology from 20 plus years ago. At my 20 week scan we looked at all the body parts in detail ....all of the male organs!

Re: being told wrong gender

I can't imagine. I was worried about this too but we had two 3d sono's and my little man was flashing his boy parts for all the world to see...several times Chat Icon. So I feel like we have 100% confirmation. But if we never had the 3d sono I'd be nervous about the doc getting it wrong.

sorry to crash, but I sort of agree. my SIL was told most likely girl at her level II (they said 60-70%). They would NOT confirm it b/c they couldnt get a good shot. She didn't have any more gender sonos after that. She went and told everyone it was definitely a girl (I kept my mouth shut b/c what did I know LOL). She ended up having a boy, so everyone thought they got the gender wrong (besides immediate family). Atleast now she admits she was wrong to have assumed girl without the confirmation.

ETA- at my Level II, my tech wouldn't confirm girl (though she had a feeling b/c their was nothing b/t the legs) till she saw girl parts clearly

I've know about 4 people that this has happened to and it scares me.
As much as I wanted a girl and found out that we are having a boy, I couldnt imagine having a girl now.

Id be shocked, but ultimately its only important that its healthy, and at least they were told before delivery and probably could exchange the stuff.

Re: being told wrong gender

My mom's best friend was told she was having a girl after having 3 boys. They did a whole pink nursrey. She had a shower and recieved all girly clothing. When the baby was born she was actually a he. This was back in the 90's though. I feel like today its much easier for the sono techs to see.

I was so freaked about this, we got a money shot of her girl parts at 16 weeks and then confirmed again at 20 weeks. If we didn't pay for a sono at 16 I would've payed to confirm after the 20. Very nervewrecking!
