Well, where are you looking? I happen to like West Meadow and Cedar in the Town of Brookhaven, they are the Sound, so it isn't rough. West Meadow has a sprinkler park and they have bathrooms.
I don't know the South Shore beaches at all b/c we go to Montauk to go to the ocean

We would drive out anywhere if the beach is worth it!
I really need some sun! My Dr. called to tell me that my blood results say I am extremely Vitamin D deficient so in addition to prescription vitamins I need some sun (I have been avoiding the beach because I have major weight to lose but whatever)

I love Robert Moses because parking is right by the beach.
I love Tobay beach because it's less crowded on the bay side.

This is a bit of a trek from Queens, but we've gone to Watch Hill on Fire Island a few times this summer and it has not been crowded at all, very family friendly. You take the ferry from Patchogue.
It's just beach though. I don't think there is a playground.

We usually hit Ransom beach in bayville. It's on the north shore on the sound, so the beach is a little rocky, but it's still beautiful. There is a great playground for the kids that is brand new and a bunch of restaurants and shops right across the street. It's never that crowded because it's mostly locals.

We used to go to West Meadow all the time when we were kids - there's a sandbar at low tide (or there used to be!) and little pools of water would get trapped by the shore with little minnows and hermit crabs and stuff in them. It was the perfect depth for a toddler to play in.

Yeah, my dad has been going there since he was a kid and he is 64
The Town has done a nice job with it, there are two play areas, plus a sprinkler park on sand (which I like), bathrooms and there is usually an ice cream man. Bathrooms, etc.
It is far from Queens, but if you went, you could make a day trip out of it and go to Port Jefferson for an early dinner too

I LOVE Crab Meadow in the Town of Huntington. Close to the parking lot, gentle water, great play area and a coffee bar for me

I second that. We just went there 2 weeks ago and LOVED IT. no walking from the car. the beach is right there. Only families. quiet and calm water for the kiddies. A cute park too.

Nickerson Beach...I live in a private beach town now, but before I did my DH and I used to call Nickerson Beach the secret beach because it was never really crowded.
