BFing once a day... could this be the issue?

BF moms tell me what you think...

I am only BFing Izzie once a day, when she wakes in the middle of the night now - say, 4 am. Then she goes back down till around 6:30 and gets another bottle around 7/8am. She is not on any kind of consistent schedule in terms of feeding.

Is it possible that she's not getting a lot of BM when she nurses and so she's missing out on calories during the day... causing her to wake at night? Does that make sense?

She gets around 24 - 26 oz. in bottles during the day plus that one nursing session. Should I just stop BFing and give her a bottle to see if it's a supply issue and she really needs more to eat?

Depends, could be 3 hours, could be 4.

ETA: Rarely it's 2.5 hours but only if she's really fussy.

Well, I don't think you're robbing her of calories by BF her at night, but she may not be STTN yet b/c, as you know, the BM is digested quicker.
Honestly, I don't think that's the issue. I think she's just not ready to STTN. If she's getting formula throughout the day - I doubt your nursing session at night is affecting her in that way. But I probably have no clue what I'm talking about Chat Icon

I don't even care that she doesn't STTN. I am worried that her not getting enough to eat that time is affecting her overall caloric intake and causing her to not sleep well during naps/fall asleep easily at night. I know I'm being confusing Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I feel like at 4 months, Loey was eating every 3 hours.

Maybe try to get her on a more consistent feeding schedule for daytime? And do you "top her off" before bed also?

I agree that maybe she's just not ready to STTN yet. I definitely don't think BFing is doing any harm or is stopping her from STTN, KWIM?

Can you up her formula bottles? See if she'll take more during the day. Have you introduced cereal yet?

I don't think that one nursing session has anything to do with it. Look at it this way - she is making it until 4am, so pretty soon, that nursing will be gone all-together and then no calories during the night, right....I wouldn't worry about it at all....I am sure she is just fineChat Icon
