I think people do not really know what it is like to be part of the working poor. Honestly I do not either but I have family members who fall into this category. Most of these people are the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. My aunt one year donated to her kids’ food drive and then wound up being the receipent of the food basket. She had nothing but always wanted to help out people who were needier than her. When I told her I was pregnant after dealing with IF for years, she bought me a few baby things from dollar general. People like this deserve to be able to earn enough money to live a decent life. Unfortunately, she has since passed away from cancer. She never owned a car or home. She never went on a vacation. She never got her nails done or her haircut. I think many people in the working poor category are living a life like this. They’re not trying to keep up, they’re trying to survive.
That’s why I advocate for $20+ an hour.
The majority of people don’t have enough in savings to cover a sudden emergency.
The majority of people in America make about $47k a year.
It’s unacceptable.
There’s enough for everyone. There needs to be wealth redistribution.
Read the story above and you will see why this won’t work
Actually my story was to say that if my aunt and her husband were both earning $20/hour they could’ve afforded things that everyday people consider normal like haircut. Instead they were straddling the poverty line for her entire life.
It is very sad and we all make choices in our lives. I could have continued with more college and I have gotten jobs that require a BA with experience.
You're going to say you didn't say it, but what you're saying here is pitterpatter's aunt was poor because of the choices she made. She chose to be poor. Poor people choose poverty. This is a gross comment.
No I didn’t and you did not read all my comments.
I've read them, and you seem to flip flop back and forth a lot. You said "we all make choices in our lives" in response to pitterpatter's aunt. Poor people must be so stupid. They could choose to have more. They just keep choosing to be poor. Wtf is wrong with them?? Don't they know there's a whole world of designer handbags out there they could choose to have if they weren't so stupid choosing to be poor??
Yes choices is something in our life that can determine how we live. Again I did say that sometimes circumstances are out of our control though. We don’t know PP aunt personally so we can’t really debate it. I do know people who were and are poor for many reasons. I only have designer bags because I saved for them and carry the same bag for years. So many people act and look rich who live on credit cards and have houses in foreclosure. Many by choice, many by circumstances. I am old so been around the block and have seen everything. I also live on a budget and while I don’t have to make a choice which bill to choose, which is a huge blessing, I know many who do for many reasons. We all hope everyone can afford to live in safe and comfortable places. Unfortunately that will never happen and you will always have that person who will do the bare minimum and the person who will work a ton of jobs and hustle so they can have more in life. This is an individual issue.
What in the actual hell does ANY of this have to do with raising the minimum wage to a respectable level so that it is more in line with inflation and COL?????
Why is it SO upsetting to you that hard working people who are barely getting by will make a few extra bucks? You do not make any sense in this thread whatsoever.
Once again I have no problem with people making more money.
Yes, you do.
Go back and read ALL of your comments. You CLEALY take issue with minimum wage workers, an increase for them is somehow "not fair" to you.
Once again you are twisting my words to make me look like the bad person.
Would it be fair if a college grad at 21 came into your husbands job and started making the same amount of money he makes after many years of working his way up? You said this in the other thread that many deserve what they make and that is exactly what I also have been saying. I don’t think people should live in poverty and I am much closer to minimum wage than you will ever be so why would I disagree with it?
Yes, me and the other 5-6 people who are telling you the same thing are all getting it wrong. Ok. lol
Just because you have a lower paying job doesn't mean that others should be kept down and minimum wage remain stagnant.
Like you keep telling everyone, maybe you need to just "work harder" so you can make more. Or get a new job. Or ask for a raise. What you do NOT get to do is keep others barely above the poverty line because it isn't "fair" to you.
You never answered my question. Seems we know it though from the other thread. You and your husband wouldn’t like if someone with no experience came in and got your husbands title and same pay. So why is that different than anyone else?
You sound like you are trouble processing basic facts of this argument. We are talking about min wage workers being able to pay their rent and put food on the table. Obviously many companies are looking for a certain skill set and experience and will continue to do so. You are making it sound like they are just going to start hiring people with no experience just because minimum wage goes up. How does that make any sense? Nothing you are saying here is sensible...
Why would people want to work in high stressful jobs when they can be a greeter at Walmart for $20/hour? Funny as I ran to Walmart today and the woman at the door was a lovely older woman. Not sure her pay but my cashier was talking about the raise to $15 and how they get checks of $200 every other month for working through Covid. She said this is the best job as there is no stress and good money.
So go be a f#$kin greeter at Walmart and shut up already. Jesus Christ with you.
You really are just a mean girl that never left high school.
LOL ok.
Why are you unable to see why EVERYONE on here gets frustrated with you? You are a glutton for punishment.
Me? You can stop posting to me anytime. You like to have a clique and if you notice many people and I can have a civil discussion. You start the mean comments each and every.time. You are just bossy and a bully and it shows in many of your posts and threads.

You never answered my question. Seems we know it though from the other thread. You and your husband wouldn’t like if someone with no experience came in and got your husbands title and same pay. So why is that different than anyone else?
Here is the point that you are missing in all of this. Minimum wage has to land somewhere and if a person is above minimum wage but also on the very low end of the pay scale then guess what? There is a good chance that minimum wage will at some point come very close to or maybe even equal low end salaries. That, of course, doesn't mean that minimum wage should never be increased, perhaps it means someone like you just needs a better paying job.
To answer your odd question, which really isn't a good example of what we are even talking about, someone with no experience cannot walk into an executive level position. It's not how the world works. But to try and make your example somewhat applicable, if at some point the Director level salary (which is under my DH) started to come close to my DH's salary as VP then he would either talk to his employer about a raise/cost of living increase OR he would consider another company with a better pay scale for his role, skills and experience. What he would NOT do is whine about the Director and the salary he is being paid because it is "not fair".
As you keep telling everyone, "we all have choices to make" so if your salary is a disappointment to you then maybe you need to make a CHOICE to find a better paying job instead of whining about what others are being paid.
Wait. You mean to tell me he wouldn't pout and stomp his foot and try to explain away why the director doesn't deserve an increase and should've made better life and financial choices?
VB, do you know why corporate culture keeps salaries a huge hush hush secret never to be revealed or spoken about? Do you know why HR very rarely posts a salary or range on job ads? Who does this ambiguity benefit?
To your point about keeping things on the DL, in my DH's company while HR knows the executive salaries any information about the executive level compensation packages above base salary are kept from them. That information flows from corporate to the president to the individual executive employee. They do not want that information getting out into the company because it can cause issues with the lower level employees. The higher up you get, the more "secretive" they are about money matters, many things are shared at the executive level only and HR is cut out.
Public companies have all that info out and many companies you can see that even if they are private. I can see what many higher ups in my company make.
Wrong.
My DH's parent company is public and a high performing company on Wall Street, while the 5-6 at the very top (CEO and right below him) are public knowledge the compensation for any executives below them are not.
Well maybe not in NJ. I don’t know if you remember when (not sure if they still do as I don’t get the paper anymore) Newsday used to publish public company salaries. Not just the very top. Many executives were included.

Do you have a link to this?

When I say there's a shroud of secrecy around salaries and discouraging employees from discussing their salaries I'm not even referring to executive salaries. I'm referring to all salaries. The goal is to get people to negotiate down against their better interests.

Republicans: Close restaurants?! And deprive us of this precious essential workers that are vital to our economy?! Nay, our very society?!
Also Republicans: $15/hour?! For those lazy freeloading uneducated monsters?!

I never hear concerns about how the McDonald’s CEO making $18,012,549 per year might drive up the price of a Big Mac.

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
“But how will small businesses survive with $15/hr minimum wage?!”
Scream the people who only buy from multi billion dollar companies like Amazon and Walmart, because you know... why go to a small business when you can get free next day shipping to your doorstep!
Jeff Bezos made $4,475,885 per hour in 2018 and they have us at each other’s throats for $15 an hour

I never hear concerns about how the McDonald’s CEO making $18,012,549 per year might drive up the price of a Big Mac.
In November, Steve Easterbrook abruptly departed as McDonald's CEO after an internal investigation into his romantic relationship with a coworker. Easterbrook was replaced by Chris Kempczinski, the current CEO.

Maybe years ago, but not anymore. You'll be lucky if you get the top five executives. Where di I get this info? from someone who researches salaries on a daily basis and has been for over 20 years.

When I say there's a shroud of secrecy around salaries and discouraging employees from discussing their salaries I'm not even referring to executive salaries. I'm referring to all salaries. The goal is to get people to negotiate down against their better interests.
It has always been taboo to talk about salaries as rifts can occur between employees.
That's exactly my point.

Yes, I read the one, biased foxnews link from one restauranteur who doesn't care about his employees.
Did you read ANY of the links that I posted from non-partisan people saying that throughout history, this has been proven incorrect?

Did you read any of my links? https://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/apr/15/what-a-15-minimum-wage-means-for-us-small-businesses
From 2015 but gives you an example from real business owners.

I guess you are unaware that she knows EVERYTHING about executive salaries. And minimum wage. And politics. And vaccines. And basically everything regardless of how many times she is proved wrong by others.
As I mentioned earlier, in my DH's company you will only find salary/compensation information on those at the VERY top in the corporate office of the parent company that owns all of the smaller companies. However, there is no where online where you can see what the presidents and VP's of the individual companies they own make That information need not be made public as the parent company is the only one that trades on Wall Street.

My only concern at this juncture is the min wage should be $20 an hour.
Are you serious?
Minimum wage jobs were not meant to be “careers”. We need to focus on how to get employees in minimum wage jobs the education or skills they need to get a career. Not a “job”
Sorry, but the kid bagging my groceries doesn’t deserve $20 an hour. The adult bagging my groceries deserves access to skills and knowledge to get them moved up to either a management position in their minimum wage JOB or another field.
But they are careers. And people shouldn't be looked down upon because they work in a grocery store for their whole lives.
