I think people do not really know what it is like to be part of the working poor. Honestly I do not either but I have family members who fall into this category. Most of these people are the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. My aunt one year donated to her kids’ food drive and then wound up being the receipent of the food basket. She had nothing but always wanted to help out people who were needier than her. When I told her I was pregnant after dealing with IF for years, she bought me a few baby things from dollar general. People like this deserve to be able to earn enough money to live a decent life. Unfortunately, she has since passed away from cancer. She never owned a car or home. She never went on a vacation. She never got her nails done or her haircut. I think many people in the working poor category are living a life like this. They’re not trying to keep up, they’re trying to survive.

That’s why I advocate for $20+ an hour.

The majority of people don’t have enough in savings to cover a sudden emergency.

The majority of people in America make about $47k a year.

It’s unacceptable.

There’s enough for everyone. There needs to be wealth redistribution.

Read the story above and you will see why this won’t work

Actually my story was to say that if my aunt and her husband were both earning $20/hour they could’ve afforded things that everyday people consider normal like haircut. Instead they were straddling the poverty line for her entire life.

It is very sad and we all make choices in our lives. I could have continued with more college and I have gotten jobs that require a BA with experience.

Not everyone has choices. Some people have no options. Flipping burgers is their only option. Some people don't have the money, time, ability, desire, strive, or MENTAL ABILITY to go to college or manage or lead others. Yup I said it. Not everyone is college or management material. Some people can only handle flipping burgers. Think back to your childhood. Were all your peers at the same level? Was everyone cut out to be a brain surgeon? Does that make them less worthy of others that are capable of more and deserving of eating cat food to survive? Those that go above and beyond in life deserve to be rewarded for their ambition and drive. But it shouldn't take away from those that can't to be able to carve out a decent basic existence for themselves. Do you know how many teachers are working poor in other states?? The people tasked with molding the minds of tomorrow working multiple jobs just to get by. Not to keep up with the jones'. Not to buy flashy cars and designer handbags. To get by. To survive. To not be homeless. How can they focus on their lessons and their students when they're exhausted from working all these hours at multiple jobs? It's sad really.

Nobody should be working poor in this the wealthiest nation in the world. It's a travesty.

ITA

i usually don't post on the politics board (because i don't feel i know enough about politics) but i do read the posts to educate myself, and i am so confused. you agree with one post and then agree with one that says the exact opposite. which is it?

you seem to say people need to educated to have a career (not a job) and then they will make the right money and "be successful."
i have two master's degrees and make barely above the national average. i don't own a home and probably never will. we bought our first new car this year and will be paying it off for a while. according to you, i have the right education but am a failure?
sorry, i don't want to work my butt of and take work home and be stressed over work all day. what i do want, is to be able to support my family and own a home. maybe if i had a higher minimum wage when i first started, i would have more saved by now.
and as for the walmart example, maybe you would be willing to work as a greeter if they paid you $20/hr but many people would not. i'd rather be poor than be treated the way the greeters are greeted by customers AND the company. my self-worth is more important than having money.

Do you live in NY?

i'm afraid to give you any details about myself as you seem to keep notes on posters and attack them for their life choices. i already gave you too much in my example.

I ask because you say you have 2 masters and make barely about the national average.

Are you trying to say that someone who has worked their butt off and build a successful business should live like a poor person?

Literally no one is saying that. But boy do you sound offended at the thought of someone you feel should be above others living below them.

And it does sound like you're saying (over and over again) that poor people should work their butt off and still live like poor people and deserve to have their labor exploited by those that employ them. Message received.

Never said that, please don’t put words in my mouth.

This is EXACTLY how your comments are coming across.

So twisting the way you hear and understand.

Nobody is twisting anything, your words are in B&W. When MULTIPLE people are saying to you that your comments are reading a certain way maybe it's time for you to think about how you sound to others. We can't all be wrong.

You seem to take issue both with those who HAVE money as well as those without. You sound bitter about what you make and because it is not much, your attitude is that others with what you consider to be "lesser jobs" should be kept down so they don't exceed what you make because it's "not fair". You don't seem to understand that many teens work for more than "fun money". You don't get that minimum wage is such an abysmally insufficient amount of money that people in these types of jobs either can't afford to keep their heads above water (regardless of the COL) or that they need to work 2-3 of these types of jobs to make ends meet. You don't get that increasing minimum wage is beneficial to all.

As I said multiple times now, paying people a more respectable wage not only helps them but helps the economy and society as well. Truly, your comments show insensitivity, arrogance and misunderstanding.

You totally miss my posts and read what you want to hear. Try reading everything and not picking here and there. I did post another link about this but everyone seemed to go right over that.
Not sure why you would think I would want people to work 2 and 3 jobs and not make a decent salary. Especially since I used my husband as an example of poor.

He’s in Florida. They already passed the minimum wage to go up to $15 anyway.

ETA: Where does it say Biden will do away with tips and the tipped wage? Waitstaff make a lower amount than minimum wage because of tips. There is a different hourly wage for tipped employees. This article is false.

If I am not mistaken, minimum wage is not the same for restaurants. It is much lower because they get tips.

Uh, that’s what I said. That’s why I asked where does it say that Biden will change the tipped wage rate? This article is talking about a rich restaurant owner saying restaurants will suffer if they have to pay servers $15 an hour.

Yeah, I find it (“we all make choices in our lives”) extremely gross as well. It’s clear she just cannot relate. But you know she has a few designer handbags and made her life better or whatever she is mumbling on about. She cannot see the forest for the trees and can only see how things relate to herself.

Do you even read my posts?

Unfortunately, I do. All you talk about is your situation and me, me, me— “I worked hard, blah, blah.” There is a whole other country outside of NY and they can not earn a living wage. You seem to dismiss this fact.

The tipped minimum wage and sub-minimum wage for people with disabilities would also be eliminated under the Biden plan.

Don't they know there's a whole world of designer handbags out there they could choose to have if they weren't so stupid choosing to be poor??

Re: Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan

Earlier in this thread, I posted info about how raising minimum wage will NOT destroy the economy.

Minimum wage was originally 25 cents. Should that never have been raised?

The $15 or $20 minimum wage will not be done overnight. Every proposal I've seen for the past few decades involves increasing it a little bit each year. That way, it can be accommodated for.

Raising minimum wage means companies will go out of business is the same as saying if rent or taxes go up, every company will fold.

Salaries are part of running a business. If you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage, and increase it each year, then you aren't a good business person.

When minimum wage goes up, everyone else's wages should go up. That's the way corporate salaries have worked for 100 years.

When my salary goes up, I can afford a few extra cents in the cost of my fries to allow the people working at a fast food place to earn a living. When I have more money to pay more for items, and that money goes to people making more money, they will buy more products from my company, so my company makes more money, so they can pay me more.

That's how Capitalism is *supposed* to work. Not raising costs every year so the CEO can get a raise from $100 million to $120 million, and keep the entry level workers at the same salary.

Yes choices is something in our life that can determine how we live. Again I did say that sometimes circumstances are out of our control though. We don’t know PP aunt personally so we can’t really debate it. I do know people who were and are poor for many reasons. I only have designer bags because I saved for them and carry the same bag for years. So many people act and look rich who live on credit cards and have houses in foreclosure. Many by choice, many by circumstances. I am old so been around the block and have seen everything. I also live on a budget and while I don’t have to make a choice which bill to choose, which is a huge blessing, I know many who do for many reasons. We all hope everyone can afford to live in safe and comfortable places. Unfortunately that will never happen and you will always have that person who will do the bare minimum and the person who will work a ton of jobs and hustle so they can have more in life. This is an individual issue.

Yes and when minimum wage goes up, prices go up. If not we all would be still paying $30,000 for houses. I still comment all the time how much this or that use to cost us and how it has gone up. The pizza we paid $5 for years ago is now $15. Minimum wage went up so they had to pay their employees more so they needed to find the extra money. The price of food has gone up so buying the ingredients for the pizza has gone up, hence to charge more. Rent has gone up. Our old apt is going for about 3x now what we paid.
Not everyone gets raises every year and many who do get very little ones that don’t even cover the increase of rent, utilities, taxes etc.
There are many people whose taxes went up, some as much as $1,000. That is ridiculous and they aren’t getting raises right cover that.

You're going to say you didn't say it, but what you're saying here is pitterpatter's aunt was poor because of the choices she made. She chose to be poor. Poor people choose poverty. This is a gross comment.

No I didn’t and you did not read all my comments.

I've read them, and you seem to flip flop back and forth a lot. You said "we all make choices in our lives" in response to pitterpatter's aunt. Poor people must be so stupid. They could choose to have more. They just keep choosing to be poor. Wtf is wrong with them?? Don't they know there's a whole world of designer handbags out there they could choose to have if they weren't so stupid choosing to be poor??

What in the actual hell does ANY of this have to do with raising the minimum wage to a respectable level so that it is more in line with inflation and COL?????

Why is it SO upsetting to you that hard working people who are barely getting by will make a few extra bucks? You do not make any sense in this thread whatsoever.

WHO CARES. Seriously. As GoldenRod pointed out, what is to you if for someone to make a better, more livable wage you have to pay $1.80 for your fries instead on $1.60? For people who make more money and who are living more comfortably small increases in the cost of goods and services are white noise, they shouldn't be life shattering.

I am not sure why you are equating ALL inflation to minimum wage workers. That is literally NOT how the world works. Your ignorance on this topic is blinding.Chat Icon

Would it be fair if a college grad at 21 came into your husbands job and started making the same amount of money he makes after many years of working his way up? You said this in the other thread that many deserve what they make and that is exactly what I also have been saying. I don’t think people should live in poverty and I am much closer to minimum wage than you will ever be so why would I disagree with it?

And you keep answering me. Read links and see what has been provided regarding why people think this increase will be an issue. You have totally ignored all of that, of real people explaining so you can post that I am a bad person. Why would I not want salaries to go up? I have struggled a lot more than you have and know what it is like.

What in the actual hell does ANY of this have to do with raising the minimum wage to a respectable level so that it is more in line with inflation and COL?????

Why is it SO upsetting to you that hard working people who are barely getting by will make a few extra bucks? You do not make any sense in this thread whatsoever.

Once again I have no problem with people making more money.

Yes, you do.

Go back and read ALL of your comments. You CLEALY take issue with minimum wage workers, an increase for them is somehow "not fair" to you.

Once again you are twisting my words to make me look like the bad person.

Yes, me and the other 5-6 people who are telling you the same thing are all getting it wrong. Ok. lol

Just because you have a lower paying job doesn't mean that others should be kept down and minimum wage remain stagnant.

Like you keep telling everyone, maybe you need to just "work harder" so you can make more. Or get a new job. Or ask for a raise. What you do NOT get to do is keep others barely above the poverty line because it isn't "fair" to you.

Just wanted to add that while not everyone has the financial option or cognitive ability to go to college or manage others or "work towards becoming ceo themselves" everyone is deserving of dignity and respect. Every job serves a purpose and adds value to a functioning society. The sanitation worker, the person flipping burgers, the person scrubbing toilets, and the person with a master's degree who lost their job and is now answering phones and delivering groceries to get by deserve just as much respect as the person who pays them. Honest work is honest work. Stop looking down on people. This thread is so classist.
