I belong to a teachers group on FB that is made up primarily of DOE teachers. I really need to delete myself from the group because it enrages me. Saying they want an educational secretary that will commit to all schools staying closed through June, vaccines to be mandatory, and my personal favorite...that the working class needs to boycott their jobs so the government will be forced to close schools and all non essential businesses through the summer and pay everyone in the city to stay home. They claim the only reason schools are open is to fund Wall St. They are completely unhinged. LOL
that's beyond effed up!
I agree, that is pretty ,messed up. As a teacher in a public school, I do NOT want schools closed. I see what it is doing to these kids mentally and on an education level.

Read this and try to focus and not feel like you are in the twilight zone. The fact that these are people educating our children really upsets me.
To be clear: I 100% agree with what you said earlier in the thread but this needs context you haven't given.
These are fringe lunatics and NOT the majority of NYC teachers.
I mean, they're complaining that DSA hasn't gone far enough - so they're off the charts. I tried to find a membership count and can't which means this group is tiny. I've been in NYC schools for some time and never heard of this caucus.
I just wouldn't want someone who doesn't know how it works to read this and think the majority are advocating for this. They are not.
You are correct. I apologize for not being more clear. This is absolutely a small group of DOE teachers and those few are the ones I was referring to when I said these are the people who are educating our children. I know many DOE teachers who are not like this. It is more upsetting they are making us all look bad.
10000% get it and agree.

I haven’t personally done any research on him. It’s on my list for after the holidays.
What I am hearing is that it’s been awhile since he was in the classroom. I’d like someone who was more recently in the trenches.
I’ve also heard that he wants schools open 100%. If this is true, as a NYC teacher- in an overcrowded school- this impossible to do safely. It’s not safe for students or staff. We have no budget for the extra teachers we needed with a reduced student load.
If the budget constraints were addressed and additional funding provided to ensure adequate safety precautions, would opening schools still be an issue?
Absolutely! I’m all for schools being fully opened- if it’s safe. We need full transparency as to what exactly will happen and a detailed plan with oversight. We need to make sure these protocols are being followed long term to ensure everyone’s safety.
This. Completely. The teachers that I know have either been granted ADA accommodations because of disability regarding exposure to the virus and allowed to work remotely or are at districts that have the resources to keep them safe re: distancing, air quality, reduced class size, etc. They're happy. But covid isn't the kind of thing where we can tell some teachers in less privileged districts that they have to be unsafe and that they're not valued just because society is impatient. I do not know a lot about this new pick, but I will ask my friends who teach and see what they think. I have heard some good things about him, and I am willing to give him a chance.
I agree with this also.
I've been in so many schools over the years and some of them are absolute physical garbage and the teachers who work in them have valid safety and overcrowding complaints without Covid.
I happen to be lucky and have a relatively newer building. We still have 1 teacher out because of her asthma and I know she really does want to be there. I'm in a small school though and I don't know the percentage of teachers who have chosen remote other than anecdotally.
My point is that some set ups are legitimately awful and those concerns shouldn't be dismissed because there is a group of fringe lunatics making nonsensical demands.
At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Maybe a solution would be to vaccinate teachers first along with medical workers. They are definitely essential. In person school is essential

Yes. I am hoping to be able to get mine in February. The problem will be convincing teachers to take it. Some DOE teachers have a lawsuit going that they refuse to take a vaccine and refuse to be tested. I am sure this is not a NYC only problem, I am sure there are teachers all over the country who will refuse this vaccine. I really want to believe we are finally close to the end- but anti science people make that difficult.

If a NYC teacher refuses testing they are put on unpaid leave. We don’t have a choice. Honestly, the testing they are doing is random and only 20% of the population. In the 7 weeks my school has tested, I haven’t been “randomly selected”. I had to ask to be tested. They’re telling us in January only the selected people can get tested because it’s too many people.

I’m a teacher. Every teacher that I’m friends with in my building wants to be vaccinated ASAP. I believe many people are vaccine hesitant but will get the vaccine sooner rather than later.

I know these people are extremists so they do not represent the greater teaching population. But going by only what I have read on the group, they fall into two camps. The "keep schools closed until 85% of the population is vaccinated" and "no tests, no vaccine, bogus virus, back to the way things were before March". I do realize this is a small fraction of educators, but still disheartening to read.

THIS is why I am soooo glad I am done this year with schooling. None of us in my house will take the vaccine and there is NO way I would allow my child to have it to attend school. I feel bad for parents as this doesn't sound like a good situation all around in the next few years.

Kids under 16 can't get the vaccine anyway. It's not approved for use in children

They never tested kids that’s why they aren’t allowed to get the vaccine. It will be a long while before I let my son go near that vaccine, if ever.

The solution for a certain group of teachers is that they want to receive their 6 figure paycheck and not work....what's wrong with that??????LOL Yes I know it's probably not the majority, but in my small circle of teachers I know, this is how they feel. One gym teacher I know got a Dr's. note saying he has high blood pressure, so he "teaches" gym fully remote. Meanwhile I'm risking my life everyday at a work place that takes no safety precautions and had a third of the company be positive before Christmas. Frustrating to say the least.

I do realize this is a small fraction of educators, but still disheartening to read.
So the ones that want 85% of the population vaccinated...as long as it's not them getting the vaccine right? Wow. I know it's a small majority of crazies who think this way but man is it disturbing!
10th, 11th and 12th would still be included in that.
Exactly, technically those are still children. I wouldn’t let my 16yr old get it. They are still developing and growing.
Is there any word if it will be mandatory to attend school for 16 year olds and up? I hope not
I haven’t hear about any vaccines being mandated for kids for school. I don’t think it will be available or ready in time.
I’m curious as to where this age of 16 comes from. You didn’t test on kids and everyone’s body development is different. So how come it’s ok for 16 and 17 year olds?

Maybe a solution would be to vaccinate teachers first along with medical workers. They are definitely essential. In person school is essential
Teachers are next in line to be vaccinated.
I really want to believe we are finally close to the end- but anti science people make that difficult.
ok so they don't want a vaccine. They don't want to be tested. Then what is the solution? Like seriously if you don't get vaccinated, when will it EVER be safe to go back in person? Kids can't get vaccinated yet. So what's their answer?

Right? I would imagine you had to be 18 to participate in the vaccine trials. So in that case it should only be approved for 18 years and older.

18 is still 12th grade though. Still the public school system.

I don't know how vaccine trails work, but every OTC medicine I see (cough medicine, tylenol, etc) all have ages, often 2, 4, 6, etc years old. How do they come up with those ages? Are there trials with 5 year olds?
Whatever method they use for Tylenol, could they use that same method for vaccines?
Lots of vaccines are given at a very young age. Are they able to reduce the age after the initial trials are over, and they see how adults handle it?

I'm thinking that's what will happen eventually
