Re: big credit card security breach at Target

I work for a credit union and our morning has been NUTS with this. Here are some steps to take:

#1. Check your account. Most *likely* you will not be hit for any fraudulent charges. People who steal card numbers usually hold off on charging anything on them until all the buzz has died down. They'll probably wait until Jan/Feb. If you used your card in Target, have your card blocked and re-issued now. Don't wait until fraud has occurred.

#2. Call your bank and let them know that your card was used! Visa (MasterCard, etc.) is still getting all of the reports together. It might take up to a week for them to get all the card numbers that were affected.. and then they'll release additional card numbers every week or so for a month.

Re: big credit card security breach at Target

Is this for credit card purchases or debit card purchases?

Ive used my credit card there within this time frame---how would I find out if my information was taken?

As long as your card was swiped at Target during that timespan, your card info was taken. That includes debit, credit, and Redcards. This does NOT include purchases made at target.com, only in-store purchases. If you used your card, ASSUME it was taken, don't wait for anyone to let you know. Chat Icon

Oh this is great!! I have a RedCard debit card! Do I need to call my bank and close my accounts too since it's linked to my bank account?? Or do I just call Target and get them to reissue me a new Debit card?

Mine was swiped and I used my bank MasterCard. I'm having a new card reissued.

Exactly this. No matter what kind of card, if you swiped at Target, get it blocked and re-issued!

Re: big credit card security breach at Target

i just called both of my credit cards that I used there. So far, no fraudulant activity.

I canceled my visa just to be safe but it will take 7-10 days to get a new one which stinks!!

My MC- the guy told me that he has seen some people have a problem but doesn't think my account is affected bc it is not showing any fraudulant activity. I will cancel this card regardless when I receive my new visa this way i am not w/o a CC!

So annoying!

I asked the cust. serv. guy what is typically stolen and he said your cc #, exp date, and name....this is the info. that stores usually save. Typically not your SS#, etc.

ETS: it seems like that don't really want to reissue new cards unless you are affected. They both told me that their fraud dept. constantly monitors suspicious activity and will notify if they see something that doesn't look right.

My bank (boa) assured me that they are constantly monitoring and have a 0% liability policy for fraudulent activity, BUT if I wanted to be proactive and replace despite the fact that there was no fraud on my card at this time, they would be happy to do so.

big credit card security breach at Target

Glad i don't shop at Target.

If I did I really wouldn't care. If I get hit with fradulent charges I am not responsible. I am not reissuing my card unless my bank forces me. I have too many auto pays set up on my credit card.

This is why I NEVER use my debit card for purchases. My debit cards are strictly to take money out of the bank. Thats it. That way if I get hit with fradulent charges, the crooks are taking the BANK'S money and not mine.

I don't even have a debit card for this reason. I only use cash for cash. The rest I charge, so it's not "my" money being taken should something occur.

Re: big credit card security breach at Target

The AG in NYS has stated that anyone who shopped instore and used ANY credit or debit card - Target RedCard or other - should contact one of the three credit reporting agencies to put a Fraud Alert on their report. This means that any initiation of new cards, new accounts, increased credit limits will be put on hold until they can reach you to verify, and will go for 90 days. It's free and at least Equifax, the one I used, will contact the other two on your behalf.

The main concern here is not just the actual card you used, but that they can use the info they got to open up other cards, access other of your accounts. It's full fledged identity theft that is of concern here.

Protect yourselves!! They can't possibly contact everyone... 40 MILLION Americans are now at risk from this single breach. It's one in every six adults, it's nuts.

This is the absolute truth I have a friend who works at the police dept in identity theft and she says never use debit anywhere. Credit only

Same here.

Family members keep on complaining about their debit cards being breached. I keep on telling them to stop using their debit card and they won't have this problem!!

Use a credit card and pay the bill off at the end of the month. Same thing with a lot less exposure.
