First, I put a security freeze on both DH's and my credit report. I went through Equifax, it's all automated, and they will notify the other two credit reporting agencies as well. This way if someone tries to open any new accounts or cards they won't be able to.
As for my Target debit card, I use Chase for my banking. On Chase's website they had info regrading the security breach at Target. They said you don't have to do anything and to continue using your debit cards as normal. They are monitoring accounts for any suspicious activity and will notify you if something comes up. Should unusual activity appear, you're not responsible for those charges as per their Zero Liability policy.
Hope this helps.

Wait...is not just Target credit cards?
No. It's ANY credit card or debit card that was used within any Target store nationwide. So make sure to not only check your bank accounts but any credit cards you may have used there as well.

Re: big credit card security breach at Target
I apologize if this has been asked. I have a Target card that is linked to my debit account. I'm going to call target to block and reissue my card but do I also need to call my bank since it's linked to my target card?

Just call any of the three credit agencies and the one you do it through will notify the other two. Once you have a security freeze nobody else can open new cards or loan without them first contacting you for further information. If you want to apply for a new card or loan just lift the freeze. I called Equifax and did it through them, took less than 5 minutes.

Re: big credit card security breach at Target
Does anyone have a phone # to reach Target's red card customer service? The # on their site and on the back of the card says my call can't be completed at this time
How much does it cost to use equifax?

It might be just overwhelmed with calls.
Reporting to the credit agencies is free.

They didn't steal your SSN's, just your CC information, and possibly pin numbers. So I'm not sure what the CRA would do?
I was in the store earlier, and the phones are jammed they said, so a lot of people can't get through.

I thought I heard they could open new acts with the info they got? Don't think that's true but I know one news station warned of this.

I'm very confused by what you posted. I didn't mention the CRA, what is that?

big credit card security breach at Target
From Targets website, only name/number/experation/cvv may was compromised... My Target red card can only be used at Target as an above poster says so i'm not worried about my debit card. There appears to be no need to flag you SSN as they don't have it.

The news agencies are reporting that some of the information stolen can be inclusive of SS#, DOB, names and addresses since they have access to whatever information is stored on the magnetic strip.

They freeze your credit so if anybody tries to open a credit card, account, or loan with YOUR information it will NOT go through without the CRA contacting you first for further information.
The news has said that with the info they obtained from Target they could open new accounts using your info so it's a good idea to freeze your credit. The freeze can be easily lifted should you need to apply for credit or a loan yourself.

I'd highly recommend a fraud alert vs. a security freeze in this situation. Especially if you think you want to buy a car, home, etc at any point in the future. In this situation, it is unlikely that SSNs were even obtained.

SSN's are not stored on magnetic strips. There is no way they can steal your identity with your account number and exp. date (that is what is on a CC magnetic strip). I think the news is just trying to create more panic.
