Bittersweet - work/parenting related
So, some of you remember my post a while back about proposing to work reduced days after my maternity leave.
I proposed 3 days a wk in March (so my in laws can watch the kids to avoid daycare during Colin's first flu season) and 4 days a wk for the rest of the yr(for the appropriate paycut).
I got the call today that my proposal was approved but responsibilities have been reworked and basically, my assistant - the woman who has been filling in for part of my job during my leave - will continue doing part of my job. Apparently, my boss is the happy with the way it's been going.
So, I now have less responsbility, I should be happy - I am, a little. I probably won't get stuck late anymore, won't get too many after hour/weekend calls, and have a lot less headaches. But, it's still difficult to realize that what once was a big part of my life is now just a paycheck. I've been with the company 10 yrs, I am getting what I want for my family now, but it still stings a bit.
Just a vent, I know I shouldn't complain, and I know I'll adjust and be relieved to have less responsibility with 2 kids at home, but still...

Re: Bittersweet - work/parenting related
I totally know how you feel.
My boss is a difficult man to work with (not as difficult as yours I'm sure, but he's about 50 years his junior, lol) and when we discuss who will sit for him when I'm on maternity leave I always say "someone who's good, but not that good." Or someone you don't like as much as me.
It's a badge of honor to be able to win the approval of someone whose tough as nails. And it's definitely a blow to the ego (or it would be to me) for him to turn around and say so-and-so can do it as well as I do.

I'll still do the part of my job I like the most and the reason I'm still there (the media relations) although it's different from when I first started - not quite the same requests And he wants me to still manage clients and confidential stuff, so he still trusts me to do the important stuff, but I feel a little embarassed returning on these terms - although I know I shouldn't.

I know what you mean, but you know what, at the end of the day you want a clear head so that you can juggle two kids AND a job. This is a major reason why I haven't left my current job although I am beyond overqualified. The flexibility, good $$$ and a clear head is all that matters to me now.

You're most certainly allowed to feel this way! Sometimes, especially now as mothers, we feel like we still HAVE to do it all, need to still be able to carry on with our lives before children now that we have them.
It's hard and yes I am sure it does sting a little, but in time you might just feel better about it....
