Re: bittersweet anatomy scan
I'm sorry to hear about your issue, but wanted to give you some words of encouragement.
One of my friend's kids had a complex heart issue when he was born, and needed a few surgeries but is doing well now.
I also have a grown friend who was born 30 years ago with a complex heart issue that they didn't know about before birth but was discovered soon after. She had a few surgeries as a baby and kid, but now she is now a mother to two beautiful kids and it doesn't really affect her everyday life and you would never know she had any issues at all when she was born...
Please stay positive and know that it may not be as bad as it seems right now. Hopefully, it will correct itself and turn out to be nothing.

Re: bittersweet anatomy scan
Congrats on your little girl!
I actually know of 3 little girls who had holes in their hearts. One's closed before birth, one's closed on its own shortly after, and one little girl did require surgery, but all three are healthy and thriving today! Many prayers for a positive outcome for your LO too!

Re: bittersweet anatomy scan
I'm so incredibly sorry you were given this news today!!!! We were also given bad news at our Level II sono- like you, a VSD/hole in the heart and a double outlet/right ventricle heart defect (the aorta favoring the right instead of left). Even if you are told it's somewhat common it is devastating regardless! However, arming yourself with information is the best thing you can do for yourself AND for your daughter! We met with two different pediatric cardiologists, and BOTH assured us a VSD is VERY operable!!! The things heart surgeons can do nowadays is amazing….I’ve even read about a doctor at LIJ performing a heart surgery in UTERO!! We were petrified after being given such bad news at our Level II, but after meeting with such amazing doctors we felt SO much better. The first doctor we met with was Dr. Vallone at LI Pediatric Cardiology at St. Francis Hospital. He was great, BUT I felt like he was better suited for AFTER our baby was born, not so much for monitoring us throughout pregnancy since his machines were not as new as the ones at LIJ (as you will need to have fetal echocardiograms for the remainder of your pregnancy, probably once a month). The second doctor we met with was Dr. Angela Romano at LIJ Cohen’s Children’s Hospital (formerly Schneider’s). She was AMAZING! She explained everything in such detail and had such a great bedside manner. She works in conjunction with Dr. Parnell (who would ultimately perform the surgery at birth….or, as I was told, if the baby is otherwise healthy they would ideally perform the surgery at 3-4 months old). I should mention to you that PLENTY of babies with VSD’s heal by the time they are born and don’t even require surgery!! Or the hole closes up on its own shortly after birth. We were in a much more extreme scenario b/c we had TWO heart defects going on in addition to the brain malformation diagnosis. Please don’t feel too upset, as hard as that is. After we were given all the other terrible news about our little girl we were wishing we were ONLY dealing with a heart defect….the fact they didn’t notice anything else on the anatomy scan is a very good sign!!! All 3 of our defects were realized at the anatomy scan and our amnio results were completely normal! Please feel free to FM me if you want to talk!! I will keep you and your little girl in my prayers!!

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and prayers. It really helps a tremendous amount to have so much support. I also really appreciate all of the personal stories that were shared, so thank you for those posts.
I will have an update following tomorrow's appt with the pediatric cardiologist.

Re: bittersweet anatomy scan
My prayers are with you - especially since I was walking in your shoes 2 weeks ago. At our 21.5 week sono the doctors noticed an enlarged left brain ventricle and a borderline enlarged nuchal fold -- both markers for downs and certain other chromosonal issues. I was ushered to counseling and given all the information. Despite being 32, I opted for an amnio. I cried a lot the weekend I waited to have it done - debating if I wanted to know at all. After the test, I bit my nails waiting and long behold all our amnio results were normal. Our baby still has an enlarged left brain ventricle and we are monitoring it closely with regular sonos but it's not chromosonal and many times these things just go away. Hoping your news will come out just like ours and please FM me - I was just there and am happy to listen and tell you more about our experience.

thank you for sharing your story. i'm so very nervous about the amnio, especially because it takes so long for the results. did it hurt a lot?

Re: bittersweet anatomy scan
Lisa, I'm so happy you found out that you are having a little
I am also so sorry to hear about the other news you got. I have no advice for you but lots of I am praying that everything is okay with her. Keep me updated (I will crash this board if I have to!)
I know you said you don't want to talk to friends or family right now but I won't say anything at all---but you can vent to me if you want to.
