Bladder Stones

My poor little baby is filled with them .. I am so upset.. Went yesterday saw the x-ray.. I have put her on a strict diet and medication for inflamation.. Anyone else have any experience with this? She is peeing blood and constantly trying to pass them.. Hopefully this will help her.. Trying to avoid surgery... Please I need hope..

My Shorkie had this 2X and thank god changing her diet got rid of them and no surgery. She was on prescrip food for 14 days and then we switched her to blue buffalo food, no table food other then plain grilled chicken or cheese once in a while and we limit her snacks a day.

From what our Vet told us, there are 2 types of stones and one can be fixed with change of diet, the other does require surgery if the diet does not work.

she is in ICU Being kept comfortable .. I had to take her just now to the emergency room.. I am picking her up tomorrow am to bring her back to my vet.. I am flipping out cant even begin to tell you how devastated I am right now .. My poor dog is suffering .. I just wanted them to keep her comfortable overnight and they wouldnt help me unless I let them do test and all kinds of work on her that I did yesterday.. So now I paid $1239.00 to keep her in the hospital so I can take her to my vet in the am.. If she wasnt wimpering I would have just kept her home with me.. What a shame this all is ..

I took her out last night.. She cried and cried all night long.. I didnt sleep yet ..she is in surgery right now.. need prayers thank you so much...

I'm sorry you are going thru this. My Chihuahua and my sisters pug both had to have bladder stone surgery. It's such a stressful thing to deal with.

my dog had them two years ago...he had to have surgery, was in the hospital for 5 days :( he is fine now though...he will be on a prescription diet the rest of his life...

My 16 year old shih tzu just had this surgery back in July..she was peeing nicely from when we got her home.. BUT she came home after like 4 to 5 days..I hope your little one gets better soon..If she is still straining and having trouble I would call the vet and see if this is expected immediately post op...is she drinking?

When he came home he was fine..he had some blood in his urine for a few days but that was it. He had sooo many stones, I noticed he was trying to go and nothing was coming out. My cousin is my vet and was amazing...he never even had to wear the "cone of shame" he stitches from the inside.

honestly trust your instincts and bring her back...you know your dog best..maybe there is more to the problem..good luck!! what type of dog do you have?

My dog has had stones for about six years. We do annual sonograms to see what's happening. She basically has tons of small stones that she passes. She is on a low-no purine diet. She eats Hill's U/D and no meat or bones. You can download a purine chart. Another alternative to the surgery is urohydropropulsion. My vet did not even know about it but the sonographer did. I learned about that on the Minnesota Urolith Center's website. They feel very strongly that the surgery should be a LAST resort. There are also pills but my dog had side effects from them so we quit. There are different types of stones so take my experience with a grain of salt as your dog's stones could be different. Also my dog doesn't even feel them- they are so small she passes them without knowing and with the diet we have kept them that way.

My dog did very badly with the surgery, he responded the same was as your girl. We actually had a very bad situation with our dog. They did the surgery and then x-rayed him to confirm they got them all and then it turned out there was one embedded in his bladder. They had to go back in and try to get it out. He is a 7lb chihuahua so his bladder is tiny. They had a terrible time trying to remove it and he was in surgery for about triple the time it should have taken. I think he stayed at the vet for a day and then they sent him home. He peed blood for a while and strained and strained to pee. It was terrible. I wonder if your girl had some damage done to her bladder as well, being so small maybe it's just hard on them. I would think it all depends on the size and texture of the stones.

On the other hand my sisters pug had the same surgery at north shore animal league for half the price i paid. her dog was perfectly fine. He was at the vet over night and then he came home. Never peed in the house. Never strained or had any stress. I was shocked to see how well he handled the surgery. I was preparing her for how terrible my chi's recovery was.

His bladder was pretty damaged. It wasn't from the stones, it was from the surgery, having to really manipulate the bladder trying to get the embedded stone out. My vet said he never had such a hard time getting a stone out. It took him well over an hour trying to get it out. My dog became incontinent. The first year was the worst, we had to confine him so he didn't pee in our bed. It seems he couldn't feel when he had to go. When he was awake and I got him outside frequently he would pee normally but when he was asleep or getting up from laying down he would dribble pee out. He used to sleep in our bed but after the surgery he would wake up in a puddle of pee. It has gotten much better but he still will dribble if his bladder is too full. He is back to sleeping in our bed. We put him out to make late and DH gets up at 4 for work. Sometimes he has to pee and he has been getting up and jumping off our bed around 2:30-3am most nights. He still pees in the bed sometimes and he still drips a few drops of pee when he is sleeping. We deal with it. To us him being alive is worth putting up with the random drips of pee.

I will say that a part of the problem is that because he is a boy stones are much harder for them to pass. We have to keep him well hydrated so the crystals are flushed from his bladder and do not form into stones. We have the bad stones that don't respond with diet change. Even so we still feed him science diet U/D and more importantly we only feed him canned food and we add several ounces of water to it. He was never much of a drinker, so we have to make sure he gets his water in his food.

Honestly, what happened to my dog may not have even happened to your dog. Her bladder might go back to normal with no problems at all. She could just be having a rough response to the surgery. It could take 3-6 months before you know for sure how it's going to be. I'd just try to stop her from trying to pee if she doesn't actually have to. I'd try redirecting her attention and calling her to you or just picking her up and comforting her.

The first week or two was terrible. I slept in the den with him and he peed all over me several times.

It sounds like she will ultimately have a better outcome for her surgery when they get the infection under control. Did they give you anything for pain management? If she didn't I would call them and try to get something.

I had a shiloh shepherd that we tried on z diet. He did really well on raw food, but it was just so smelly and expensive to feed a 115 lb dog. I probably could have looked into just cooking for him but it was hard enough cooking for myself :o)

have you considered cooking for her then you could do whatever very limited ingredients she needs and it would probably be healthier. Maybe the vet could tailor a diet that works for both her allergies and for her stones. I had a cairn terrier that we tried the allergies shots for, they didn't help her at all though.
