Blood work at the vet/Heart worm question
I just called the vet and my Amelia(dog) needs her shots, last year I took her to love a pet and got the post card in the mail that she was due, so I figure I should take her to the vet for an exam, I just called and they want to do blood work, now this is because I said she hasn't been on heart worm medicine.
Can someone explain to me If I need my 10 lb doxie chiuaua mix that is inside 98%, and the only dogs she is by are my parents and my FMIL dogs . Do I have to spend the $60 on blood work for her I just think its a little crazy ... help me !! !! ! ! !
p.s if someone knows how a dog get heart worm please tell me!

Re: Blood work at the vet/Heart worm question
mosquitoes are the cause of heartworm in dogs.
Unfortunatly, I believe that some some Vet's are just out for your money. I have worked for a few and this is how they are.
One vet insisted on giving my cat who was about 5 minutes away from death a rabies shot.

Re: Blood work at the vet/Heart worm question
They need to have the bloodwork cause if the dog has heartworm and goes on the meds then they can get really sick. My dog doesn't go out much but I have her on the meds and they say every year she needs to be tested.

Re: Blood work at the vet/Heart worm question
The heartworm med is a prescription and in order for the vet to prescribe it they need to know if the animal does or does not have heartworms so they know what to prescribe.
The blood test is not bad at all. It's a tiny needle they prick in the leg and get the results within minutes.
Our pup takes heartguard and we still have to get him tested every year when we need to renew his prescription.

Re: Blood work at the vet/Heart worm question
I don't think the heartworm test is unnecessary. As AP said, they need to make sure the dog doesn't have heartworm before giving it preventative medicine - especially since your pup hasn't been on it.
