bottle sterilizing questions

I didn't register for a bottle sterilizer because I am going to breastfeed, however, my Dh will be using bottles to feed the babies their night feeding (eventually), so bottles will be needed. I've read that bottles shouldn't go in the dishwasher. Can't I just wash them with soap and water and be done with it? I'm a very clean person, but not a germaphobe (spelling??). What do you do for your bottles? Oh, and the boiling of water seems okay, but again, is it necessary?

I had a sterilizer and used it only once. We just boiled the pieces in hot water the first time then washed with hot water and soap every time thereafter. Never had a problem.

We've just put all the bottles in the dishwasher. Most bottles are designed for that, and they are sterilized by the hot water in the dishwasher.

Re: bottle sterilizing questions

Thats what I thought too but I got one of the sterilizers that go in the microwave for like $20-30 and it takes 2 minutes. I feel better using the sterile bottles.

I dont have a sterilizer either..I just wash the bottles (we use drop ins though) in hot soapy water and boil the nipples. It seems to work for us!!

We put them in the dishwasher, and sometimes I wash them by hand. Our pediatrician said both ways are fine.

I sterilized the bottles for 5 minutes the first time I used them, but since then, in the dishwasher they go, and they are clean. If you are concerned about the dishwasher, you can check the bottle instructions, most say it's fine.

We had a sterilizer, but we returned it. It really wasn't worth it to us.

Re: bottle sterilizing questions

i ebf and don't use bottles often, but if i do, i just throw them in boiling water for 5-10 minutes or i use the medela microwave sterilizing bags.

i don't have a dishwasher.

i really recommend the bags, because you may want to use them for the pump accessories too. they are very convenient.

Re: bottle sterilizing questions

we never boiled water, and I've used my sterilizer once in total and that's through 2 girls.

We either hand washed in soapy water or threw em in the dishwasher.

I EBF my 1st and formula fed the 2nd.

We use brita filtered water in both their bottles and for water.
