Braces for SS
Does my DH have to give BM half the money for SS to get braces? I know he's supposed to pay half of his medical expenses but do braces fall under this category? TIA!

Re: Braces for SS
Yes, absolutely. Even if he didn't "HAVE" to, it would be the right thing to do. We paid half for SD.

We don't go through court or anything but my sons dad goes half with dh & I with his braces. It's just the right thing to do.

Re: Braces for SS
Its not that we dont want to. We dont have the extra 2 or 3K that it is going to cost for braces. DH already pays alot of money in child support each month (on top of all the other little things he pays for). We cant even afford medical insurance for me and she wants us to dish out more money.

Re: Braces for SS
I am almost positive he is liable for atleast half. My SS is under my DH's insurance and the court said he is liable to pay 45% of medical benefits.
Perhaps the dentist can work out a payment plan. This is what DH and BM did when SS got the pre braces. They are . I am not looking forward to when its time for ss to get braces.

I feel like this shouldnt fall under "medical benefits" because it is cosmetic. So if I had a SD and she wanted breast implants my DH would have to pay half for those too

Re: Braces for SS
Even though braces are cosmetic I wouldn't compare it to implants. They are very expensive but the orthodontists are usually very good about setting up payment plans. For example we pay $100 a month until they are paid off. But that $100 is split between my sons father and us so it's $50 a month each not too bad.

Just curious if your child needed braces you wouldn't get them for him/her???

Re: Braces for SS
I know my DH has to pay for half of braces for SD - it is stated in their agreement. His half is $3,000 since she already received a quote for them for $6,000.
It is not a matter of whether or not we want to pay for them, we just DO NOT have the money and not sure where we will find it, DH already works 2 jobs, but nonetheless, we will somehow figure it out when she actually gets the braces, its all part of having children.

Because my DH was extremely uneducated about support etc...and had a cr@appy lawyer who he hired to "look over" the child support agreement that BM drafted
He is 100% responsible for all of my SD's medical, dental, etc...

Re: Braces for SS
DH and BM have something that covers this in their agreement. I forget what it is, maybe 50/50? But they did address it back when they made the agreement.

OMG, braces are so expensive now! I will tell DH to start saving immediately!
But ITA with above posters, there are definitely payment plans available. Espepcially in this economic time, they would rather have your business and get paid over 2-3 years rather than lose your business entirely.

they are so expensive!! We will have to do a payment plan too - we just don't have the money to pay our share in one lump sum.

It depends on how messed up they were and if we could afford them. If we couldnt afford them, which we cant for SS so we wouldnt for our own children. When i was a kid I should have had braces but my parents couldnt afford them so i didnt get them. My teeth arent really messed or anything so it didnt affect me in anyway and either are SS. They are a little crooked but not so much that he will get made fun of or even have issues with later in life.

We arent talking about right and wrong here. We are talking about not being able to do it financially. I work as a substitute teacher in a school district. I have no medical benefits because it is way too expensive for DH to put me on his insurance. DH works 2 jobs and we just get by. We would love to be able to afford to get SS braces, and take him on vacations and do all sorts of things for him, but financially we are unable to do so.

Well the way I see it my dentist wouldn't tell me my son needed braces if he didn't and I wouldn't want his teeth to give him a complex expecially how cruel kids are these days. My sons teeth aren't bad either but he needs them and we will pay. If you brake it down each wk it's $12.50 for your share if being split. Having children is expensive on it's own however by chosing to have children you also need to be ready for any unexpected bills. Things happen kwim. I guess maybe if you put yourself in her shoes how would you feel? I look at things all over being I'm a step mom, a mom with kids with my husband and also a mom to a boy who's father was my x. If my sons father coldn't come up with $12.50 a wk to help his son I personally wouldn't think to much of him to be honest. Maybe other drs even have cheaper payment plans . GL

Re: Braces for SS
okay, let's not pass judgement here.
A father (or mother for that matter) is not a bad parent b/c they cannot afford certain things. We do not know the financial status of the OP and her DH. Sometimes the money is just not there and you cannot draw blood from a stone.

I'm not trying to pass judgment but I just feel if your child needs something it's our job as the parents to make sure we figure out a way to get it. My husband does not have health insurance for himself because it's way to expensive however because my son needed braces he makes sure we can do it. Even if it's paying a outstanding bill a little less we make it. Sometimes we have to give up the little things to compromise for what's more important. Also my sons bio dad at times doesn't even have a pot to pee in but again he finds away to get me the money that is needed. He's been behind in child support a lot lately but when it comes time for the orthodontist or sports he makes sure I have it. I do understand people are in different situations and trust me I no it's hard. I was a single mother for 5yrs and I busted my butt to make sure I could get the things my son needed. My point was that they have many payment plans available and that I do feel both parents should be responsible in providing braces. The only thing that bothered me was the comment on breast implants, a denstist recommends a child to have braces but you don't hear a dr recommend breast implants.

Thank you! I said it before and Ill say it again, we would love to give SS braces along with many other things but the funds just arent there. And whoever didnt like my breast implant comment, that was just an example. Would it have been better if I had compared it to something else cosmetic.....either way it is cosmetic and not absolutely necessary like say a heart transplant. Many children have gone without braces and have gone through life just fine without a hollywood smile, me included.

Re: Braces for SS
Braces are more than cosmetic, sometimes they help with jaw alignment that leads to terrible pain and discomfort. My sister had to get braces at 27 because of this discomforts from her over bite.
Unfortunately, regardless of whether you want to pay it or not if it is needed and BM goes to court your DH "MAY" be liable. So be prepared just in case, kids come up with all kinds of last minue expenses. DH and I have sacrificed to provide for his son, but thats part of being a parent and I agreed to that when I married him.
