Brand New Mom Questions (BFing and BRU)!

Our son was born on Tuesday and so I "officially" join the parenting board! Right now I have two questions that I hope you all can answer (the first of MANY I am sure!).

Since our son was born nearly a month early, there are things I need to buy at BRU that we did not get at our shower and now need. How do we go about getting the completion coupon for the registry? Is that something we have to wait for in the mail?

I am currently breastfeeing and have to say that my boy sure does poop a lotChat Icon Usually I change his diaper when he wakes up and then I nurse him, but I find no sooner does he start nursing but he poops again. is this normal? Should I not change him when he wakes up? should I just wait until after BFing?

I find that he has a tendancy to fall asleep while in the middle of nursing. At this point, I am unable to switch breasts with him because of it. He seems to nurse for about 10-15 minutes and then falls asleep. I am not that worried about how much food he is getting in as he certainly has enough wet and dirty diapers, but everyone in the hospital told me that I need to switch during nursing to help my milk production. The only PITA is that he does need to be fed more often which doesnt give me much down time since I feel like the minute I am done feeding him and then changing him and then getting him back to sleep, it is nearly time for him to start nursing againChat Icon

Hmmm...ok...that was more than 2 questionsChat Icon TIA for all your responses!

I'm not sure about the BRU coupon. Maybe you could try calling them.

DS also used to poop while I nursed him so I'd change his diaper after he ate, not before. A diaper change may help wake your DS up so he'll nurse on the other side. I did this a lot in the middle of the night b/c DS would pass out after a short nursing session, but would want to eat again an hour later. I'd change his diaper after he nursed on one side. Then, I'd nurse him back to sleep by offering the other side.

You can also try undressing him, rubbing he cheek, or using a wet washcloth on his face to keep him awake.

DD poops a ton as well! Like PP said, I diaper change between breasts because that's the only way I can seem to keep her awake when nursing.

If DD only takes one side when nursing in the middle of the night, I spend a few minutes to pump out the other side. Otherwise, I get engorged and uncomfortable by the next feeding. Whenever I'm too exhausted to get up and pump the other side I make sure to offer that side first at the next feeding.

As for BRU...I would call them. Both pregnancies, my coupon arrived when I was 37 weeks along! Good luck!

Congrats on DS! I'm not sure about the BRU question but I can tell you about the BFing question. For the first few weeks I would change DS before feeding him if I needed to wake him up so he wouldn't go past 3 hours (sometimes stripping him would be effective enough), and again after the first breast. I would change him in the middle so he would wake up and take the other breast. In the early days I read that it's important to try and get him on both breasts at each feeding to help your supply. I did this and have to say that I seem to have a lot of milk.

Hi! Congrats on your little one!

Your ds sounds a lot like my dd :) I am also BFing and she still falls alseep after one boob, then wants the other 1/2 hour later Chat Icon Chat Icon I change her before feeding her to make sure she is awake as possible, Then I feed her then she poops again Chat Icon! I figure I wouldn't want to eat while in mess, so she shouldn't either :) and her skin is very sensitive so the shortest time in messy diaper is easiest on her.

As far as your BRU Completion Coupon you CAN get it in store, I did :) Just ask to talk to a Manager and explain your situation. They DO have them in store they just have to keep them under Lock and key. Chat Icon Just tell them that your DS is already here, so there for you need to complete your registry. Put everything you MIGHT want on your registry before you go, so if you make any decisions while your there, you still get the discount :)

GL & Congrats!

Not sure about the BF'ing questions, but with the BRU coupon, I was told I had to call in for the completion coupon.

I didn't and didn't get one. They do not automatically send it to you.

Congratulations!!!! The BRU coupon should come in the mail I think 2 to 4 weeks after your "due date"
Newborns poop a lot! My little one was dubbed "Stinky" because of it. lol
If he falls asleep on one side just start nursing on the other side at the next feeding.

Re: Brand New Mom Questions (BFing and BRU)!

First, There is a number you can call to request your completion ticket. Give BRU a call and they can give you that number.

Second, If you DC is consistently pooping after you changed him, I would nurse first, then change. You might notice that this changes often as they grow.

Third,
I never nurse on both sides. DS was a huge baby, double his birth weight at 6 weeks, but he only nursed on one side. At the next feeding I would just start from the side he didn't nurse on. Your body will quickly get into the rhythm of nursing every other side, and you should no longer get engorged. At night I would put a safey pin on the boob I last fed from so I didn't get confused or forget.
