Breaking Amish
Does anyone else watch this show?
I think it's so interesting, although I wonder how much of it is scripted.

Breaking Amish
I only watched about 15/20 minutes last night before I fell alseep. I'll catch up tonight on it. I liked last week, but also thought I wonder how much of this is scripted.

Re: Breaking Amish
I watched the first episode and the first 15 mins of the second so far. I agree, I feel like so much of this has to be put on for the sake of the show. Why on earth would anyone drive from Lancaster to Philly to fly to NYC? What was it, a 10 minute plane ride? Also, where are these people getting this money? I could be wrong but I kinda thought the Amish and Mennonites don't really have their own money, and if they did, it wouldn't be anywhere near enough for a flight to NYC and a posh hotel room.
Also, I find it really odd that all of them just happen to be leaving their homes at the same time. The previews of what happens in later episodes is really shocking for people who were raised in such a conservative religious lifestyle. So much of it seems fishy to me.

I just assumed the producers developed the idea of the show and sent out feelers around the community to see if there were any young people that wanted to leave. So that part is "scripted" if you want to call it that. And I would guess that the ones that do have the balls to leave are going to party as hard as possible when they get to their destination?
I'm also assuming when I watch that TLC is funding this so the posh hotel rooms don't bother me.
Not sure why I'm defending a television show....

It just seems so fake and scripted. I would be more interested if they were really following what a "normal" Amish person would do if they opted to leave their community. I guess it wouldn't make as good TV though if they lived a realistic lifestyle.

Re: Breaking Amish
It doesn't bother me so much because I saw that documentary Devil's Playground about 10 years ago that documented Rumspringa (sp?) where Amish teens go off to party and live in the modern world before they're baptized into the church. Most return, but some don't. Very interesting. Way more so than the show.

Breaking Amish
I watched the first episode, missed last nights, but I'll continue watching. I think it's because I love going on vacation in Lancaster

Breaking Amish
i find this show intriguing. even if it is a bit scripted. i would assume the show is funding the hotel/flights and some other expenses. many of these kids could be going through what the other poster said, rumspringa (sp)? its never really specified in the show whether or not they have been baptized into the church
