Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
OK I just saw this on the today show and thought it was interesting. Apparently there is a huge controversy over it.
What do you think?
Breast Feeding doll video
ETA: this is a toy for little girls, not an educational doll to help women with breastfeeding.

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
Interesting.
I guess it is no different then a babydoll that takes a bottle...
I will admit that it did shock me a little to see her put the doll up to that bra thing...

Interesting......................
I'm glad they are trying to promote BFing awareness at a young age and try to normalize it.
I know its common and normal for little girls and boys to "pretend" to nurse their baby. I'm just not sure how I feel about the fake breast thing....
Interesting.......................

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
Um Not quite sure what to say about that. I breastfed DD and think it's a wonderful thing, but I don't see the benefit of LITTLE girls doing this.
ETA: I feel there are other ways to promote it/normalize it to younger kids.

Why would this company find this doll necessary is my question ?
IMO, society is making our children grow up way too fast as it is, little girls do not have milk in their breasts so I feel no need for a doll like this...Will they be selling child size pregnant bellies as well ?
Don't know why, but it disturbed me a bit Wouldn't catch me buying this for my DD

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
Truthfully, I see nothing wrong with EXPLAINING to a child what breast feeding is and that it is something that an ADULT woman does and should do it whenever the child needs to be fed despite my own hang-ups with BFing.
I don't find it necessary for a child to "perform" this function even in play. I find it creepy. Children do not have to do everything an adult does.

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
I also find it a little creepy. I understnad young children want to play house and imitate Mom and Dad, but I think kettin ghtem use their imaginations is a better way to go about it. The bra, the slurping and the belching where not realistic and were a bit too much for me .

I'm a huge advocate for BFing, but I found that disturbing. Not something I would purchase for my DD.

I BF both my kids for 2 years and I always wanted to because I saw my mother do it to my younger siblings and she had with me also. I wouldn't buy that doll for Jaidy.

while I would not buy this doll for my dd, my BF's daughter used to pretend to breast feed her dolls when she saw her mom BF'ing her baby sister....this I have no problem with and I would not ask or tell my dd to stop if she did this

I agree... I know that "role playing" is a huge part of imaginary play for children. I think that is normal. But the doll that suckles and burps and the fake breast thing I think takes it a little to far.

We Breast Fed for a very long time... DC knows all about Breast Milk and has put dolls - toys to their chest but I have to say the bra thing is odd...

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
My little sister was almost 4 when Ryan was born. She saw me nurse him for 14 months - I was very open about it with her and she understood that is how I fed my baby. She understood enough to take her own baby dolls and hold them to her chest and say she was feeding her baby. She was exposed enough that when asked at school where milk came from her answer was not a cow, it was "a mommy's boobie". Great, I'm glad she understood it was nothing to be ashamed of and it's natural.
Would I get this doll for her ? Nahhhh. To me, completely unnecessary. I don't see why a little girl needs to put on a faux bra with nipples - that's a bit odd to me.
But, to each his own.

i can't see the video but i get the gist of it from here.
i would love to see a daughter of mine "nurse" her baby doll but i don't think the fake breast is necesssary. very odd.

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
I haven't seen the doll nor do I need to (based on your comments I can kind of figure it out ). DS1 has seen me nurse the baby for the past year. I do not hide it as I am feeding my baby! Many times, he has asked to feed the baby too. I put the baby on his lap and after about 5 seconds he is done! Needless to say, I do not think a doll would be necessary in our house but I guess each to their own!

Re: Breastfeeding doll -thoughts?
I think if you're going to advocate bf'ing, you should do it the right way - no accessories needed. The only thing you need is the baby.
