Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

Thanks for bumping! I actually do have a question. I EBF my 7 month old and lately I feel like I'm running out of milk at the end of the night (his last feeding before bed). He generally nurses every 3 hours during the day but at night I nurse him at 6pm and then again when he goes down to sleep. He used to go to sleep at 9pm so it worked out perfectly, but the last month or so he's been going to sleep at 7:30 and it's not enough time in between feedings for my supply to reestablish. I tried adjusting the times so that I feed him at 4:00 or 5:00 but inevitably at 6pm he's rooting and showing hunger signs. Should I restart taking Fenugreek to build up my supply?

does he seem to not be satisfied at that bedtime feeding? i'm thinking a few things... your supply is never completely emptied so if he is just soothing nursing and snacking at bedtime then he is probably fine. if he is still STTN or lasting the same length at night without needing a nursing session, then he is fine. otherwise, i would take fenugreek in the late afternoon to boost your supply for the end of the day.

I am not due until May, but I plan to EBF, and was wondering if anyone can recommend any good literature, books or websites that can help me be prepared.

TIA :)

La Leche League is a great website/forum for BF'ing mommies.

I didn't read any books so I don't have any advice there! GL!

So glad I saw this thread. I was doing great, and now I am concerned. We are 7 weeks PP. I startrd pumping at around 4 weeks and we introduce the bottled at 4 weeks. He did great taking the bottle :)

However, within the last 2 days or so, when I pump it takes me forever to get 3-4 ozs. I was getting 6-8 ozs. I have noticed I am not as full and my boobs are leaking like they used. My DS seems fine, I think he is getting enough, I am not worried about that and I know he is more efficient than the pump.

I guess I'll start the fenugeek pills. Any other suggestions and has this happened to anyone else? I think it is the time for my friend to come because I noticed a little bleeding, so I am wondering if that has anything to do with it too.

Oh and I do drink a beer a night, I so look forward to it, that supposely helps with milk production, LOL!

I didn't get AF until 7 months PP, but when it came, my supply took a huge hit. I struggled with pumping the week before and the week during AF. I also had supply issues whenever I got a cold.

Make sure you're drinking and eating enough. Are you pumping on a regular basis? If I went a day or two without pumping at all, I noticed a difference in my supply. Check the membranes on your pump. Sometimes they get small tears and that can affect how much you're pumping. They should be replaced every 1-3 months. You could also always take More Milk Plus and/or Mother's Milk Tea.

I must admit, I was getting lazy at pumping, I am going to try and pump twice a day now, to build up a freezer stash for when I go back to work, that is my motivation. It's so hard with a 2 1/2 yr old and a 7 week yr old who isn't sleeping through the night.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

How many ounces does the "average" two month-old take? DH's birthday is Weds, and he wants to go out to dinner just the two of us. My parents are going to baby-sit. DD has been more or less EBF, so I have no idea how many ounces she'd go through at a feeding at this point.

I believe at 2 months DS was taking about 2-2.5 oz. per feeding.

Hi, DS is 4 weeks old. I've been EBF & hope to continue. Can you help me get started pumping to freeze.
How many times a day should I pump & for how long?
Once I start pumping do I have to do it everyday at the same time?

TIA!!

the best thing to do is pump after your DS finishes eating. the morning always gives you an abundance so that's a good place to start. i pumped every morning for a month i am pretty sure. pump before bed too.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I have a question...When you BF, especially in the early weeks, do/did you just offer one side, or did you do both during every feeding/?
If you do offer both breasts, when do you switch and how did you know when it was time?

Also did that change as BF went on? For instance did you offer both sides in the beginning but once your supply regulated just fed from one side each feeding?

I was just offering one side but now that DS seems to want more to eat (when I offer him a bottle of pumped milk) I am thinking that it might be better to offer both sides...

Thanks!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

Hard to remember from DS, but I think I offered both sides for at least the first 3 months. I would do the 10-15 minute rule or until he got sleepy. Then I would take him off the breast, burp, and put him to the other side.

Around 3 months I would just offer one side at a time. Which we continued until we weaned at 14months. Only problem with that is sometimes I would forget which side he nursed from last. If that was the case I'd try to offer both sides just to ensure both breasts were emptied.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I have always offered both sides. I switched after about 15-20 minutes. Then I offered the side I left off on at the next feeding (so if I started with the right and then switched to the left, I started with the left at the next feeding).

Julian is 10 months old and I am still offering both sides. I also did with Aidan.

Thanks! I was just offering one side per feeding but I am going to do the switching now as I think he seems more hungry these days and 2 meals might be better than one!Chat Icon

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

is it normal for DD to finish nursing one side in 5-10 minutes? that's what she's been doing lately and she seems to be doing fine!

How old is she? If she seems satisfied after doing this and is wetting her diapers, I say it's fine. DS #2 is a very efficient nurser and has been from the beginning. Starting from about 3 months old he would nurse for anywhere from 10-20 minutes total.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I started with offering both sides, but DS did not switch well, so I do one side at a time. In your case though I would definitely offer the other side and see if that is more filling for DC.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I had such a big oversupply in the beginning that I had to have DD nurse off of one side to ensure she was draining me (and getting enough hindmilk). Once my supply leveled off, which wasn't until about 3.5 months, I was able to offer both sides again.
