Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
i am a new mom and have a couple of ?s for BTDT moms: -how do you know if your milk supply has come in? (dd is 6 days old, I thought my milk supply came in yesterday bc when i woke up my shirt was wet and i had milk coming out (droplets) ---- but when i would feed her she wouldnt get enough, she could be on one breast for over an hour and she still wants more? how do i know if I have more milk left? On wednesday night i was literally BF for almost 5 hrs and it still wasnt enough for her, when i put her down she would start crying and/or put her hands in her mouth, so DH & I supplemented with formula and she was a happy baby. I am still BF but supplementing with formula, i am ready to give up. Everytime I think of BF i am just saddened that she wont get enough from me ;( another problem, my left breast is fine, she latches on fine and nothing hurts but my right one - ahhhhh the second she latches on i almost have tears running down my face. im not sure why this could be, why one breast is fine and the other isnt ???? I also have these rocklike/icechip like things in my breasts, how do i get rid of this? are these clogged ducts? should i massage with cold or hot water? i am so clueless ;( i knew this wasnt easy but i just feel so useless. then i have another ? - when i supplement with bottle should i try to pump to make sure that im getting all the milk out? Help!
ETA: i also have saline implants (under the muscle, inscision under the crease, the lactation nurse at the hospital said it doesnt make a difference, that im fine)

Hi gabby, welcome :) your milk supply sounds as if its come in..only you would know though..for me i felt rock hard, and in ALOT of pain when my milk finally came in, and i felt a very harsh tingling sensation..have you felt any of this yet? Im wondering why you think dd isnt getting enough? Has she been weighed since leaving the hospital? Is she making enough poopie/peepee diapers? Sometimes as new moms whove never nursed before we tend to "assume" our babies arent getting enough because of hints other people throw at us..some babies take a LONG time to nurse, an hour, or more..in the beginning, (first 3 weeks) you feel like they are constantly attached to you..try looking at it differently, try seeing it as her getting accustomed to being outside of you..and appreciate the time you have with her bonding this way, i will forever miss it..as they grow, they get better and better at nursing, and the feedings become shorter and shorter If shes gaining, shes getting enough..if shes creating enough diapers for you, shes getting enough.. as far as supplementation goes, youll need to decide whether you want to continue giving formula or go back to strictly BM..if you decide you want to EBF, then you need to stop the supplementation (people say to do this cold turkey, but personally i may wean and give less and less formula) BUT either way, WHENEVER you are giving a bottle, try and have DH give it to her, while you pump.. the more you pump, the more you nurse, the more milk you will have.. thats the biggest mistake i made..not pumping enough..and giving in too soon to supplementation.. i now looking back think that unless it is DR recommended, or its something you feel strongly about..supplementation leads to a low milk supply..even if you pump every time you bottle feed.. NOTHING helps your supply more then NURSING itself..pumping does NOT have the same effect..KWIM? I felt like you did, SOOOO many times, i almost gave up, and as a mommy to a 10 year old, and a 7 month old, i can now look back and honestly say i am MOST proud of myself for continuing on as long as i did, and i PROMISE myself that with my next one (due in feb) i will make it even longer.. as far as the pain youre getting in one breast, the first 3 weeks are the WORST, but i promise you, by day 21, you will wonder how the two of you ever got there, and you will marvel at the HUGE progress youve made.. by the 2nd month, i felt like a pro.. you are NOT alone in how you feel, we ALL felt like giving up at one point... once you get through it, you will BOTH feel amazing about it..
i hope ive answered everything you needed to the best i was able to..theres a LOT of wisdom from alot of mommies on this thread..i hope you use it often and i wish you guys luck

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Did anyone find that when their DC was eating more there wasn't as much left to pump?
DS is eating about 10 min on each side every 4 hours or so. When he takes a bottle it is about 6 oz. I find that I don't have much left to pump.
Should I be pumping at a different time? I used to pump after a feeding when he was just eating on one side. Just curious.
Thanks!

I never got that much if I pumped right after a feeding unless it was the am feeding. I usually wait an hour if I can to pump...

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I pumped for the first time yesterday and tried to feed her from a bottle but she wouldn't take it. The nipple seemed HUGE for her and the milk seemed to be coming out too fast.. it was the born free bottle with level 1 nipple.
What bottle/nipple did you find to be the best for a mostly breast fed baby?
Thanks!

I know it may seem like you dont have enough milk but just b/c she is nursing for hours doesn't mean she is still hungry necessarily. I remember feeling like dd was nursing all the time the first 2 weeks it was so hard. It is also just for comfort, have you tried giving her a pacifier yet? I know people are afraid of nipple confusion but for me it help a lot b/c if you let them suck so long it kills your nipples. Also, it sounds like you might have a yeast infection in that one breast, either that or you have a bad cut. That happened to me early on also. Take motrin and I'd call your ob b/c if its a yeast infection you need antibiotics. Don't give up it gets better I swear. good luck.

I was told to try the platex drop-ins that are supposedly closet to the breast. I never had to try it b/c my son actually uses the 5oz BornFree with Level 1 nipples. I didn't introdue the bottle until 4 weeks so maybe it was big enough to take it by that time. I love Bornfree though!

My son sleeps through the night so I have a lot of milk when I wake up. I wake up before DS & pump...I get my most milk at that time. I also pump once mid day & after his last feeding. I don't get much either but I do it every day & store!!!!

I use the Playtex Drop Ins with my son and we have since day 1. They work well and he has no problem switching from bottle to breast.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Hey ladies, I have some questions.
Yael is 5+ weeks old. At this stage with Alex, my nipples weren't sore at all anymore, but with her, they are KILLING me, each and every day. She does have a ridiculously strong sucking reflux, so I'm wondering if there are any other positions that I should be trying that might be easier on me? I do the cradle hold right now.
I also noticed that on my left side, she clicks A LOT when she's sucking - does that mean the latch isn't so good?

My first clicked like crazy when she nursed. I'd read it was due to a shallow latch, but I never had any poblems with sore nipples. Eventually as she got older and more efficient, the clicking stopped. Perhaps try a different position?
I will say that I was WAY more sore the second time around than I was with my first. I also attributed it to my second having a MUCH stronger suck reflex than my first. I found in the very beginning that no hold hurt more or less, but varying it helped.

A shallow latch, huh? Is there anything I can do to make it better or just let her figure it out on her own? Thing is, Yael suffers from bad gas, and I'm wondering if it's because of the clicking.
Well, at least I'm not alone... this pain is NOT fun! But I will persevere...

Thanks!
Yeah, if I get up at 7am I will pump. I am fine to feed him within 20-30 minutes. If I feed him right away without pumping, I have so much milk that he SPITS up A LOT! I don't wake up to pump so it seems I have a lot of milk and it works out with that am feeding.
If I go out & he gets a bottle, I pump in place of that feeding. Or I will pump an hour or so after I feed him (I feed every 3 hours). I don't get much but I put it towards my supply. It is A LOT of work pumping & BF!

I am also trying to figure out the whole timing of pumping for when I go back to work in 2 weeks. Do we pump at the times DS would normally eat when we are at work?

I would definitely try to do that so you can maintain your supply. If DC eats every 3 hours and you start going longer between nursing/pumping, your body may start producing less.
