Did anyone find that when their DC was eating more there wasn't as much left to pump?
DS is eating about 10 min on each side every 4 hours or so. When he takes a bottle it is about 6 oz. I find that I don't have much left to pump.
Should I be pumping at a different time? I used to pump after a feeding when he was just eating on one side. Just curious.
Thanks!
My son sleeps through the night so I have a lot of milk when I wake up. I wake up before DS & pump...I get my most milk at that time. I also pump once mid day & after his last feeding. I don't get much either but I do it every day & store!!!!
how do u get ds to sllep thru the nite??? minde is 8 w. and dont sleep longer than 3 hours!

my 8 week old DD has been STTN...I find that swaddling her and putting her in a sleep positioner has worked for me. Not sure if it works for all babies...

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
hello all...I guess this is my last plea for help = I have seen a lc, spent ridiculous amounts of $ on anything and everything to help (fenugreek, mothers milk tea, oatmeal, gatorade, hosp grade pump, pisa, etc)and at 11 weeks, dd still uses a niplle shield and usually `also drinks 2 oz of pumped milk at every feeiding....the feeding "process" (feed, bottle, pump) takes an hr-hr and a half minimum during the day and I am exhausted - as is she - since by the time she falls asleep it is practically time to feed again if I follow the 2 hr sched. recc'd. I bf my first dd for 14 mos and had no issues but have struggled with dd#2. It breaks my heart but I am trying so hard not to give up - my heart is breaking but I do not know what to do...has anyone else gone through this and can offer advice???

swaddiing does nothing for me sadly....he sleep longer on his stomach...but i only let him do that during naps when i can check on him every few minutes

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Hi everyone- I'm a new mom, my was born on 8/28. I am having milk supply issues and I am wondering if there is anyone that waited until a week or longer for their milk supply to arrive. I am working with an lc and we're using a supplemental nursing system, fenugreek and pumping to try to stimulate my supply. I'm getting a little discouraged and just looking for any other helpful hints to increase my milk supply.
thanks

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
DC is 12 days old, I've been using a SNS since day 5. When I squeeze my left breast I get a small trickle and when I squeeze my right, nothing. My LC suggested renting a hospital grade pump since my medela swing isn't producing anything. Anyone have any luck increasing their milk supply with a hospital grade pump over a regular pump?

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I posted this on a separate thread, but didn't get any responses so I'm hoping I have better luck here!
Right now DD is EBF and I have to attend a wedding without her when she's 4 weeks old (October 10th). I'll be gone about 5 hours. When should I start building a stash and when/how often do I pump to do it?
Right now she BF's every 2 to 2 1/2 hours. At night she cluster feeds from midnight to 3:30 am.
This is all new to me because I exclusively pumped with DS and didn't have to balance BF'ing with pumping. Also, I had a lipase issue last time around and wasn't able to freeze milk. I lost over 300 oz because of it. I don't know if this issue is going to repeat itself. The LC told me it might not happen this time around. Not sure what to do...

If you only need milk for the wedding, I'd probably just start pumping a week before. That way, if you still have a lipase issue, you're not just pumping and dumping. My supply was always best first thing in the morning. I used to pump after the first morning nursing session. However, when DS was older, I sometimes pumped an hour or two before he woke up to nurse.
I didn't start building an actual freezer stash for work until at least 6 weeks in. I'd pump once per day after that first morning feeding.

A friend of mine had success with this. I think she also took Fenugreek. The hospital grade pump did wonders for her.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
thanks for bumping this. im going to try to keep going with this. but im not against supplimenting if DS needs it. apparently this kid eats!
im thinking of working with a LC. i have a drs appt tomorrow to tell me if DS gained enough weight. he probably did cause ive been giving him some formula.
here are some questions i have:
1) DS has been using a nipple shield since the hospital because i have flat nipples. but i feel my nipples have become from pronounced but he still wont latch. he'll latch for a second then cry and want the shield. how can i wean him off?? i know he doesnt get as much milk with the shield so that could also be one of our problems.
2) when im BFing DS always falls asleep and i have a hard time keeping him up. i tickle him, rub his cheek, rub his chin, put a cold washcloth on him, but hes so damn comfortable in my boob! any other suggestion?
3) does your DC always burp?? i try for awhile to get him to burp and sometimes he does and sometimes he doesnt. i try hard to get him to burp cause hes been having gas issues.
thanks!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
1) Don't have any experience with the nipple shield, sorry! I know some women have tried pumping for a few seconds before feeding to get their nipples the correct shape and then get their little one to latch. Would that work?
2) Whenever DD falls asleep during feedings, I change her diaper. I usually change her before switching sides. It gets her riled up pretty good and she remembers to eat!
3) DD doesn't always burp. She'll spit up a little later on, but I don't have the patience to wait 20 minutes for a burp especially in the middle of the night when I'm half asleep

I bought my own sponge & Dawn for at work to clean them (but my sink also only seems to have COLD water). I've also used the Medela wipes but find they are too "wet".

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
This is a great thread - I'm an EBF Mom & have notebooked this. DS is 4 wks old. I'm going to eventually be pumping when I go back to work in Jan & am dreading it. I truly enjoy the time we BF. My plans were originally to introduce pumping & bottle feeding after 4 weeks, but I just don't have the heart to start it yet. Did anyone else go through this? I keep telling myself I'm still going to be BF'ing, but getting the initial start is killing me.

Yes, I went through the same thing. I love BF-ing, have since day 1 and was dreading going back to work and having to pump. I hate pumping, but obviously I do it for DD (3x/day at work... I just started a thread about how great weekends are since I don't have to pump!).
I introduced a bottle of pumped milk around 3-4 weeks and it took buying a few different bottles to find one she liked. I suggest trying soon so you know which bottles/nipples she likes. DD only likes playtex drop-ins with the slow flow nipple.
Good luck!

Thank you so much! It's so good to know I'm not crazy for feeling this way. I know I just need to do it. Thanks for the tip on the bottles too! I have a friend who went through the same thing & I believe she said both of her boys only liked the Playtex Drop-ins with the slow flow nipple too - must be the most like BFing!

I'd start pumping now. If you don't introduce a bottle yet, you could have issues with bottles down the road. The main reason I suggest pumping is to build a freezer stash. During my maternity leave, I'd pump once per day right after the first morning nursing session. I built up a good freezer stash. At the beginning, I wasn't sure whether I'd continue EBFing once I went back to work. Once BFing got better, I knew I wanted to continue. Shortly after going back to work, I found it difficult to pump as often as I wanted. My supply dropped a bit with that and really dropped after DS started solids and I got AF. Having that freezer stash has helped me EBF for 11+ months.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I have a few questions regarding BF so I thought to bump up this thread and add it here.
1. When did you start pumping to create a supply of BM? I have one bag frozen but I'm wondering if I should be pumping everyday to increase my supply just yet. DS is 10 days old...
2. When do you pump- one time, two times, etc, am/pm, and how soon after you BF-30 minutes after, one hour after? I'm feeding DC about every 2.5 - 3 hours. And a feeding session will run from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. I spend a LOT of time trying to wake him up for the second feeding.
3. How quickly did you introduce a bottle to DC? Since DC is not on a set schedule with feeding I'm wondering if I should start the bottle now or wait a little longer. I'm going to take care of some errands this weekend and should be back home before 2 hours but sometimes DS wakes up in between feedings wanting more.

1. I don't think I started pumping to build a freezer stash until at least 4-6 weeks. Depending on when you're going back to work, I'd probably start by 3 weeks.
2. I pumped once per day right after the first morning nursing session. That's when my supply was best. DS also nursed 45-60 minutes as a newborn.
If DC is gaining weight and having enough wet and dirty diapers, you probably don't need to spend a lot of time trying to wake DC to eat more.
3. I introduced a bottle within the first week. I had to pump at the beginning and I'd give a bottle whenever DS was really hungry and frustrated with BFing. I ended up stopping this b/c the bottle interfered with his latch. I'd hold off for another week or two until BFing is really established.
