has anyone produced too much milk? my son can never empty me and i'm only comfortable if he's feeding ever 1 hour! he likes to sleep 3 hours at night and then when i nurse him its painful. i also have a very forceful let down and the first minute is excrutiating! also someone suggested pumping a little... the pump is worse pain than the baby!
I responded in your thread the other day about the pumping..... you probably need a larger horn and you need to lubricate it before pumping,.... I use a little organic olive oil on my nipples before I pump and I switch between a 36 mm and 40 mm horn...
Pumping should NEVER be painful

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I am currently breastfeeding my second child. I had a rough start with my first 3.5 years ago, but went on to BF for 26 months.
Things I have experience with: -Flat nipples -BFing after a c-section -Thrush -Latch problems (pain, cracked nipples, bleeding etc) -Overactive letdown -Extended BFing -BFing the second time around (which thank goodness has been MUCH easier!)
I have a question now too. My DD had no problems taking a bottle while I was away. DS is refusing bottles. He has taken a couple ounces twice after a long fight with DH, but sometimes he flat out refuses. Any tricks to convincing baby to take a bottle? I go back to work part-time at the end of the month.

What a fabulous thread Jaime!! I am currently breastfeedling and supplimenting formula to my 4month old monster, allison
The first month is absolute helllll! No one EVER talks about how difficult this is and if they do, until you've been thru it you're like how can breastfeeding be difficult? All they do is s*ck and that's it (hah!)
I can't help w much, but we can sit and talk days without end about how much Thrush s*cks balls. It really does. I've had it way too many times
Has anyone had success w nipping thrush in the bud? That genetian violet thing has anyone done that? I'm running out of my fluconazole and I wanna try something super effective.

DS didn't want the bottle when I was away at work the first few months. He fought DH hard. One thing that helped was DH feeding him with the bottle as close to where the nipple would be. (Kind of like getting the bottle in as close to an actual breast as possible on DH.) Guess he just liked the hold.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

This is a great thread!
My son was born 3 1/2 weeks early and spent 4 days in NICU. I bf'ed him exclusively for the first two days and then I started supplementing with formula as my milk had not come in yet.
When I got home from the hospital I pumped b/c I had not felt my milk come in and I only got a few drops each session. I went to a lactation consultant - who wanted me to use a SNS (supplemental nursing system) - which was a complete mess and was totally aggrevating to use, went to my ob - who told me to accept that this wasn't going to work. I started taking More Milk Plus which has helped but I am still not getting more than a quarter of an ounce between pumping both breasts!
I am going to be trying for #2 soon due to my age so I am not sure if it is worth the battle to try to make this work.
At least he is getting some bm, right?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!! Patricia
my advice to you, is the same advice i followed from these ladies when i was in my similar situation..the main thing to remember is, the more you bottle/formula feed, the more your supply lessens..the more you nurse/pump..the more the supply grows..this is plain and simply the truth..and PLEASE dont rely on what youre getting out of the pump to be what your baby may be getting because this is also NOT true..i can barely pump 2 oz between 2 breasts..but my dd is gaining steadily, aand is doing wonderfully, and can polish off a 6 oz formula bottle like nobodys business, so i assume fr my own mind that shes getting at least that when she nurses. there is NO ONE not even your OB that should be telling you this is a lost cause, because i truly dont believe it is.. my dd lost more then 10% of her body weight in the first 2 days of life, because my milk came in late, she couldnt latch, and we just didnt know WHAT we were doing with this breastfeeding dance..i was forced to formula supplement because if i didnt have her gain, she wouldnt be allowed home with us.. she came home drinking 1- 1 1/2oz of formula after EVERY feeding.. at almost a week old, i STILL never had a major let down..i couldnt have even told you if my milk came in or not..i just didnt have alot.. i used fenugreek capsules..3 of them 3 times a day..(which for me didnt work because i have problems with absorption in my body) i also drank double bags of mothers milk tea, which i highly recommend...i ate oatmeal daily, increased my water intake, and then eventually in the last 3 weeks have started the More Milk Plus..this has been the best for me so far.. i would advise you that EVEN if you get pregnant with #2, you can STILL nurse baby #1..i would say to try what i did..little by little, i would lessen the formula supplementation by a 1/2 oz..until one by one each feeding was SOLELY breastmilk..the ONLY formula feeding a day my dd was getting until i was hospitalized this week was the nighttime before bed bottle..she was EBF for the entire day besides this, WITH NO SUPPLEMENTATION... it can be done!! I promise you!! My baby had such a hard time, but i am so adamant that this is right for us.. and i didnt believe in the whole "happy mother happy baby" thing, just like another fellow poster disclosed to me today..i KNEW for ME, and for my baby, breastfeeding was the BEST decision i could make for us..and there was nothing else i wanted to do.. im going through some issues right now since being in the hospital, but so far, we went from solely formula feeding for the last 3 days to formula feeding 4 times yesterday, to so far only 1 formula bottle all day today..and my supply is slowly creeping back up... please stay with it!! youll be so proud you did!!

I used Gentian Violet & it worked! DD was also using Nystatin (sp?) & I put Gentian Violet on myself after nursing (after so that it wouldn't be as heavy & messy for DD when she nursed again) & went topless as much as possible.

pumping is getting easier not as painful when i minimize the suction. just very time consuming. olive oil huh? doesnt it get into the breast milk?

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
What a great idea! I was really looking for something like this- so a big THANKS!
I have been trying to BF DS for a little over 3 weeks now and I am feeling sooooo frustrated with it- not having much luck- but yet I don't want to totally give up. DS latches but not for long- maybe 10 mins- and when I pump I don't get much- he is looking for more and more so I have supplemented with formula most of the time and occasionally get in some BM at least once a day (like I said I don't produce much and it has been that way since day 1). My plan has always been to pump and bottle feed him the BM. But lately the pump doesn't suck as well as I think I need. I really don't want to give up but like I said I'm frustrated with it and why don't I have freezer full like some moms?!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
This is a great thread!!! I have been EBF my DD for the past 7wks....she latched on like a champ, so I am afraid I can't help with those type of issues....but I can help with "the first few weeks" issues...I agree with a pp that no one really tells you about the PAIN associated with the first few weeks, but that you can get through it, and that it will get better.
I would like some help with BF and going back to work as that is where is am headed in 5wks. I have a prety good supply frozen as I have been pumping since the day I came home from the hospital. But I am very worried that I will not be able to pump enough to feed DD each day. I really don't want to supplement w/ formula, but I know I may have to.

First I want to say I think this is an AMAZING thread! And I would love to be a part of it!
I have thus far EBF my 10 month old and plan on weaning at a year.
Although I am no professional. I have experience with latching problems, EBFing, pumping, and soon weaning.

Lupe.... the Gentian Violet did NOTHING for me.... the LC put me on Mupirocin ointment (just put a little on the nipples everytime you BF or pump do not wipe it off for baby to nurse) and it cleared up in 24 hours and I had a HORRIBLE case of thrush..... Apparently Nystatin is not suppose to be used anymore for breast thrush..... not sure why?

I'm glad its getting better when you minimize the suction! Also double check your flange/horns
AS for the olive oil it really doesn't get into the milk... even if a small trace does it isn't harmful. Some LC reccommend using Lanolin when pumping but to me that was too thick and my nipple didn't move properly in teh pump so she reccomended the olive oil.... WHAT A DIFFERENCE in pumping with that!! You should try it!

Hey Jaime...... most likely you need a larger horn/flange....most larger breasted women do.
The pump comes with a standard 26 mm but they go up from there. I rotate between a 36 mm and 40 mm..... interestingly enough your nipple size can vary day to day....
Here is a quick link that explains flange/horn sizing to make sure you are using the right one!
HTH!
Correct horn/flange sizing

Nystatin liquid contains sugars in it to make it more palatable. Sugar encourages yeast growth.

Arghhhhh Well I'm glad you know what the problem is. Hopefully things will be much more pleasant with the larger horns.... I would still use the oil with the horns.. it makes thinks a lot easier and more comfortable and keeps the nipples moist!

I told you those big guzungas would need a larger flange.... that can DEFINITELY contribute to why you are having pumping issues. Also use a little olive oil for lubrication... see my post above
BBB and BRU usually carry the horns/flanges. I got mine through my LC
Let me know how it goes!
