Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Ok, so to answer a few of the above posters..i was in the hospital for almost a week, and was SOOOO afraid my dd wouldnt latch when i got home..i pumped also to try and keep up my supply but because i wasnt able to eat for 3 days, my supply suffered bigtime.. when i got home, she latched on IMMEDIATELY, and like Porrrus said, she was so relaxed and happy, she fell asleep on me for 3 1/2 hours (she never does that) i think my biggest obstacle was my milk supply, and if it wasnt an issue for me (which it seems like it shouldnt be for you) she wouldve done just fine returning to the breast..
to answer another poster, who asked about pumping for 2 months and then returning to the breast..my dd had a difficult time because of my milk situation like i already posted.. but if i were you..and your supply seems good, i would drop the bottles cold turkey at least for a day and see how it goes..nurse VERY frequently to get your dc readjusted, and your supply where it should be.. i think they naturally really want us, the bottle just confuses them for a second because its instant gratification..
my BFing life lately, goes something like this.. because of my dd's weight issues, i have started solids (4 months) which i intially wanted to wait out until 5 or 6 months..and i have decided that i need to come to terms with my personal situation.. the fact is, i had gastric bypass surgery, and to be honest, my body DOESNT even have enough nutrients for ME, because i now have a different absorbtion process then "normal" people do...so all this time, it makes me nervous my dd wasnt even getting enough nutrients from me.. im tired of trying to pump and having NO success, and im tired of crying because shes fussy at my breast.. so, ive decided to nurse her when she wants it, and FF her when she wants that, and so far, its been working out pretty well.. i nurse her if she wakes up at nite..(which thankfully since i started solids she hasnt been doing much of) i nurse her for the first morning feeding..(she LOVES this one) then again before we leave the house for the day (she tends to be slightly fussy for this one, so i dont push it, if she wants it, she wants it, if not, i bottle feed) she also gets cereal and fruit at this time.. i nurse the next feeding (mid day) i formula feed the next (around 5pm) with another meal of cereal and fruit..and then she nurses for a short time (basically for comfort, shes barely sucking) at around 8..and at 9 i give her the bedtime formula bottle.. im upset it turned out this way, but im glad at least shes getting SOMETHING..and i just pray that for my next dc, im able to do alittle better with my supply, since i feel that THIS has been the major issue for me this whole time..
thank you ladies..for ALL of your support

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
First of all, this thread is awesome! Thank you all!
As someone who is due in 18 days and wanting to breastfeed, I read the entire thread.
My question is, if I EBF in the beginning will I be able to pump later on when I have to go to work? When should I start pumping to prepare for going back to work when my baby will be about 12 weeks old?
Also, I am nervous about pumping at work. I am a teacher and only have 40 min prep periods and not sure where I can go to pump? and if I will have enough time to pump during the day?
I would appreciate any advice from BTDT moms. Thanks in advance and I look forward to joining this board shortly!

I can't answer everything here as I am a SAHM but I will recommend to introduce a bottle early. DS is 9 1/2 months and hates the bottle! With DS1, I was a working mom but I HATED pumping so I supplemented with formula once I went back to work and nursed only in the mornings and evenings.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
What an awesome thread. To the above post who is expecting - I too EBF from the beginning. I got a pump two weeks after coming home from the hospital. At three weeks, I introduce a bottle of BM that DH gave to DS at night. I started storing any milk I had. The first month I got 9 bags worth of 4oz. The second month I got around 15. Last month, I don't know how much but had three big bags full of BM (I am guessing about 25). Right now I am back to work and I do pump enough to feed DS every day.
I pump twice a day in my car. It takes about 15-20minutes and I produce around 6 -8oz each time. Can you ask what others have done?

That sounds like a good plan about pumping and storing.
Unfortunately, I can't think of any other teachers in my school that have come back to work and breastfed. Everyone I know has either formula fed or tried BF and it didn't work. I am going to try to keep thinking about people to ask though. Thanks!

MrsPowers, u should FM MrsRiviera, shes a teacher, and had the same time issues at school as youre talking about..she could probably help you out in that dept.. i would suggest getting a pump for when you get home..and using it asap..starting to build up a supply will be your best defense in a crunch.. good luck!!

Good call! I forgot about Beth. I will definitely FM. Thanks!
So should I get a pump now to have when I get home? Or should I rent one from the hospital? I wasn't sure which is the best way to go.

IMHO until you know BFing is working for you, rent a pump. $300 is a big expense if it doesn't work out and pumps are not refundable.
SweetCin is also a teacher who BF and pumped at work.

true, i did borrow my pump from my stepsister..see if you could borrow one, renting for a month is as expensive as buying one..so if it came down to it, id buy it, and if it didnt work out, id ebay it!!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I'm a teacher & going back to work in September. As with my first child, I will give two formula bottles during the day, and BF morning, afternoon & evening. It worked out great the first time so I'm hoping it goes well with my 2nd DD. I detest pumping and will not commit to it daily so this works well for me. I'm fortunate that my body adjusted so well.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
DS is 6 days old- he latched on immediately after birth...
In the hospital the nurses and LC continually reassured me our latch was perfect...
However after my milk came in (3rd day) I started to have nipple discomfort...
DS nurses an avg of every 2hrs- usually 10-15 min each side, and Im using lansinoh cream after each feeding...
While he nurses Im fine but I brace myself for that initial latch...
My nipples arent cracked or bleeding- if anything MAYBE a little tiny bit red..
He has also been falling asleep while feeding-cutting his feedings short and leaving me in alot of pain...
Not sure if my boobs/nipples are adjusting or if it something more...Either way Id like to "fix" it before contacting an LC.
TIA

What you are experiencing is normal. If you nipples hurt when he initially latches on than that is normal. It will last for about 3-5 weeks and then overnight it will go away. If you are experiencing pain after latching for longer than the first minute then you may have a latch issue.
HTH.

The intial let down is the worst at the beginning. If you're only in pain at the beginning of BFing, then the latch is fine and the pain is normal. It probably took about 6 weeks before BFing stopped being painful for me.
If DS is falling asleep and you want to wake him, try tickling his cheek, taking off his clothes, putting a wet washcloth on his face and/or changing his diaper. If you're still uncomfortable, you can try pumping for a few minutes just to relieve yourself.

If you want to start to build a freezer stash, you can pump right away. I had to pump at the beginning, but then stopped for a while. When I started again, I only pumped right after the first morning feeding. That was when my supply was the best.
I have the Medela PISA. I pump for 15 minutes per session. If you plan to pump at work, I definitely recommend that pump. If you're used to BFing/pumping every 3 hours, it may be painful for a little while if you're not able to pump that often at work. Eventually your supply will regulate. Just be careful about going too long in between feedings b/c it could affect your supply. Good luck!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
Thanks everyone for your responses...
I do EVERYTHING to try and wake him...change him, get him naked, stroke him with a wet washcloth- but when he wants to sleep nothing seems to work
My nipples dont hurt during, but it is a little uncomfortable...the intial latch is really my biggest problem...
I have the medela PIS advanced... and one day I did pump a little to get some relief...will pumping this early on mess with my supply?
Also- the past 2 days my boobs no longer feel full- it almost feels like I lost my milk...is that normal?
DS nurses every 2 hrs on the button, however at night has been giving me 2-4hrs in between (thank god- its only been 2 days but Im hoping this stays)
Im not getting as much when I manually express milk-sometimes its barely anything and I really have to work for it... ( I do this to get my nipples "wet" to stimulate DS to eat when he doesnt want to wake up)
I mean when he eats I can hear him gulping and swallowing- but I dont feel the milk flowing like I did before...???
We are still have tons of wet and dirty diapers... and from Sunday-Wednesday DS gained 8oz.
Im just so nervous that this "empty" feeling and the fact DS has been sleeping so much, is because Im losing my milk...If thats the case I really want to bring it up...

The empty feeling is totally normal and it's great that you are feeling it so soon after delivery. In my opinion, people that are successful breastfeeding are the ones who feel "normal" during it. Feeling engorged is not pleasant! The pain you are feeling with the initial latch could potentially continue for a few weeks.. after a while you won't even feel it at all anymore. I would like you said pump a little just to feel relief.. don't let the pump empty your breast yet.. just so you don't "mess up your supply" Although, if you feel you need to pump just do it. If it makes you feel better i would.
if he's wetting his diapers and pooping and gaining weight and sleeping 2 hours he's getting enough.. try not to worry about it .. you are doing great!!

Sometimes I feel like increased sleep = dehydration...
Its just weird Im not even really "leaking" when its supposed to be time for a feeding... and my boobs dont even get hard or fill up at that time either...
I mean..would DS be able to make those BFing noises with no milk????
(I mean he is def. getting milk- just not sure he is getting enough...)
He feeds usually 10-20 min on each side (usually 10 and 10- sometimes 10 and 5) is that ok??? Everything I read says it should be for longer... ??? When he intial latches and starts to eat he really "chows down" sometimes choking not sure if he is getting so much at first that he he doesnt need to eat as long...
I dont remember anything from DS #1 and TBH I wasnt very succesful then...so I really cant take any of my own advice..lol

when he first starts feeding watch his mouth it will go from fast sucking to a slow rythmic sucking and you will hear almost like a "kah" sound... that means the milk is flowing and he is swallowing. my breasts never leak and i have an oversupply of milk!! my son only nurses from one side each feed but it never takes him longer than 10 minutes to empty my breast.. and then he is done. Try not to time the feed. He will stay on the first breast till he empties it. If that takes 10 minutes fine if it takes 20 fine. Then if you want to move him to the other breast.. it's ok if he doesn't want it or if he only lasts 5 minutes on it. He's full! Just make sure you start out on that side next time! Congrats on making it this far with Braeden! Sounds like you may be successful this time!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
I have been EBF my DS for almost 3 weeks now. I want to start pumping but I don't know when I should start and when I should pump? Also, which bottles do you use when you pump? Are there any accessories that I need?
Does anyone have any advice? I really would like DH to be able to give him a bottle and I want to start a stash for when I have to go back to work in Sept.
Thanks!

You can start now. I started pumping at two weeks. I used the bottles that came with my pump (Medela Pump in Style). I would get extra bottles as I keep them in the fridge a day or two before I put them in the baggies to freeze and so you will need the freezer bag for milk storage. If you can mangae it you can pump from on breast and nurse from the other. It takes some practice but it works. Also whatever feeding DH gives, you should pump then as well. Good luck.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**
WOW, it's funny that I saw this today, because...
...DD is almost 7 months old, has been BF since birth, and I am about to take the plunge into BF in public for the first time today.
I am very much a "pump and bottle feed" type person when it comes to going out in public. I'm just not comfortable with it and feel like everyone will be looking at me. I have the nursing wrap, but DD loves to try to pull it off.
We are boarding the plane for NY today, and CA on Tuesday, so BF is pretty necessary. I'm so nervous about it. I just want it to go well, you know?
So if you could, send me some vibes that DD doesn't pull the wrap off and show my goods to everyone in the airport

Thanks!
Hey Ivelysse!! I've been thinking about you...how is the BF going? Sounds like it is going well!
I started pumping simply by pumping for about 5-10 minutes after each feeding. Not only does this boost your supply, but it also gives you a little extra to store and use as you need.
You'll find that as time goes on, you'll be getting more and more for each pump. Then, when DS is on more of a consistent night schedule, you can pump last thing before you go to bed. I started the night pump when DD was about a month old (that's when she started sleeping through the night consistently) and I still pump right before bed. Most nights I can get 8-10 oz, and I'm proud to say that my freezer stash is nearing 250 oz!
Best of luck, it sounds like you and DS are doing great!
